View Full Version : Band Predicament

my bands bassist is not great, and i want to replace him. one of my other band memebers think we should keep him in the band because "hes cool". and i feel this is alomost the absolute worst reason to keep someone in the band. the only reason i wanted to keep him was because he could get us into a home studio for free, but now we have found another way into a home studio for free, so there is no point in keeping him, (Side note: the bassist is crazy and may stab me if i dont handle this delicately) and if we were to kick him out i would have to do it since i am the unnofficial "band leader".
so i was wondering if anyone could give me any advice on delicately kicking him out of the band, so i can walk away from him without any additional holes?

make it a genre thing. tell him his bass playing is too heavy, too emo, too girly, whatever, for the band's current style, and that its nothing personal.
that, or tell it to him straight.

Just tell him that you and the band are at a diffrent level and I think we both would be better off in diferent bands. That might work.

Yes but he said the bassist is crazy and violent, he probably would be pissed about being ditched.

I think that's kinda lame.
I say just tell him the truth "You're a cool guy, but you're not the best bass player, I mean I have to write your basslines. So we are going to look for a new bassist."

here is the easist full proof way....
have the band "break up" then about a week later start a band with a bassist and say all the old meber were asked to join the new bassits band....
you wont have kicked him out you just started a new band.... but keep the new band on the low down till its passes over

Personally you gota go with what the band want. He might not be the best bassist in the world but will you get another one? It's always hard keeping people you feel let your band down in but if the others don't want to kick him out and it could split your band up its best to go with it......

Agreed. Think of it this way:
You are saying that you are unhappy with his performance, and that you are willing to step up to the job of "leader." You're also saying he doesn't know this.
The exact same situation could be true, but reversed (he's not happy with you and you don't know, and he's willing to step up and become the "leader").
That's a bad situation all-around. I'd go with what the majority of the band wants if you don't already have a ringmaster.

It's not foolproof. Somebody's bound to catch on when the band starts gigging under the "previous" group's name.
Additionally, if he's even remotely dedicated, he's going to wonder why your main project (with him) isn't practicing as much as the side project, or even as much as it used to.

Naw, thats bad it makes people feel like crap
You'd have to be an utter fool not to notice
No matter how long you wait, he'll twig
'Ahh right yeah...what?! Who?! Oh everyone from the old band :) Ahh....except me!!!!'

Dude, if you write the bass stuff, you have every right to choose who plays it.
But, if your bandmates like having him around, try to use your reasoning and teach him things he needs to improve on.
The bassist in my band has only been playing for a few months, and sometimes it frustrates the hell out of me, but he's one of my best friends and I've found that all I need to do is sit down with him after rehursal and run through each song one at a time, and point out things he needs to improve on. He's making slow progress, but the rest of us are very patient.
Then again, the bassist in my old band was a bit of a nutter who couldn't play. He smoked too much dope so no matter what I tryed to tell him, he'd wither take it offencively or it wouldn't sink in.
I reccommend you try teaching him some things, and if it doesn't work out, I guess you're just going to have to replace him.
The best way is to tell it to him straight, but very calmly, so he doesn't take it personally. And just say it's a professional decision, not a personal one.

thats the worst way to kick band members out.
you should either just tell him, if the band agrees etc, that you dont think its working out with him... or... help him out with whatever he might be struggling with.

To everyone who would just ditch him: Grow some balls and be men. Real men don't just ditch people. Be tough and kick him out if you have to, but be straight with him. Nothing sucks more than being stabbed in the back by your band.

ah ha.. just tell it straight
the best way to let them go nicely is to just say something like "Your not up to the playing abilites that we are looking for... we need you to improve (whatever aspect you think is bad of him) or we are going to have look for a new bass player
give him the option to either improve or leave.... that makes it look more performance based than personally based

Tell him to straighten up and work on his style. Give him some kinda ultimatium. If that won't work.....it's hopeless, give it to him straight (tell him he's out).
