just wondered what the alt/indie forums take was on their newest release. personally YFIIP jaded me so much, that i hated it at first but after repeated listens i have to say that wow, its amazing.

I like certain parts of the album, but overall the production wasn't as clean and good as YFIIP. I hear that their next album is going to be produced by the guy who produces Do Make Say Think's music.

It's pretty good, haven't listened to it that much. I definitely prefer You Forgot It In People.

I've listened to it a few times and I don't particualrly like it. There are hardly any standout points on the album. I'm certainly not a fan of the production. The songs are usually muddled by too many simultaneous tracks swirling about chaotically. And most of the vocals are indecipherable. I haven't listened to the bonus EP it comes with yet.

For those that don't like it, i say listen to it a few times. My fav tracks are:

Windsurfing Nation (Feist and K-OS = GOOD!)

It's pretty good, haven't listened to it that much. I definitely prefer You Forgot It In People.

I'm in the exact same boat. I worship YFIIP, but for some reason this one really doesn't draw me in as a whole like YFIIP did. I think the samey-ness has something to do with that...

Windsurfing Nation is the best song to me.

I like it alot. Although it doesnt have really standout tracks (like Almost Crimes, Cause=Time, whatevz) it is a pretty solid album thoughout. It also just has this really sexy vibe throughout the whole record, which is :naughty:

Awesome album.Windsurfing Nation, Ibi dreams of Pavement and 7/4 Shoreline are the highlights. I think the production is pretty good, especially when you consider how many instruments, voices and ideas are being molded into each song. It sounds 'messy' but in a good way.

YFIIP is in my top 5 albums of all time so I suppose this album isn't for everyone.

God, I'm so sick of people looking at me like I committed heresy when I say this, but here it goes:

I enjoy Self-Titled more than You Forgot It in People—which is not to say that I don't love both very, very much.

Why? I can't really put my finger on it, actually. Why do I prefer the color blue to red? But I do have a few ideas. . . .

For one, I've recently been veering toward a fondness for hip-hop, especially the more esoteric sort of stuff, such as Prefuse 73 and Handsome Boy Modeling School. And in regard to rhythms (as well as the rap in "Windsurfing Nation"), this genre definately influenced the making of Self-Titled. —Honestly, can anyone say that the rhythms on Broken Social Scene's newest album aren't catchy as hell?

Second, the entire "feel" of the album is absolutely perfect for me. Someone above commented that the album has a sort of sexy vibe to it, and I agree on all counts, except that there's more. Other than the sensual feel (check out "Hotel" for Christ's sake), there's also a kind of coolness to it, an urbane, metropolitan, epiphanic, driving-downtown-at-midnight-esque mood to it (and by the way, the album makes for superb driving music). Essentially, the album sounds different from other albums: none of the silliness of pop, none of the brooding of post-rock, and none of the lethargy&whatever of typical indie/alt rock. Of course, I hold a certain fondness for all of these genres and more, but let's face it: music needed something new.

Third, the lyrics are, to many, a weak point of Self-Titled, but their vagueness—and to an extent, their muddle'dness—really does it for me. Some of the lines in the song really connect for me no matter what my mood.

And of course, plenty of other possible reasons exist for my loving Self-Titled more than You Forgot It in People: the electicism, the greater use of soaring trumpets, the diversity of the different vocalists, and so on. But when it all comes down to it, I just like it.

So, does that make me a heretic? Perhaps this post can help explain why anyone would prefer Self-Titled to You Forgot It in People.
