G'day,

I have been playing acoustic quite alot lately and I would like to actually improve instead of spending hours playing the same song / songs each day and just mucking around, everyone recommends playing scales etc? I do that regularly up to an hour a day.

I am not aiming too high I would just like to play some Neil Young, Dylan, Rolling Stones, Peal Jam Unplugged kind of stuff.

Any suggestions on what should I do?

ps: I have been playing for around 10 Months, Don't have any issues with bar chords or anything.

Thanks
Alex

Well this is applicable for Pearl Jam (maybe the others as well but I'm not familiar with them). Most Pearl Jam is quite simple chords with seemingly difficult long solos. I'm pretty sure the majority of their solos is based around pentatonics, so just practice different shapes of the pentatonic scales slowly. For the rest of the songs just practice things such as clean chord changing and make sure you're in time and have the right rhythm by playing along with the song.

An example of a pentatonic shape

E-7-------------7--------------
B---10-7----------10-7---------
G--------9bfull----------9bfull---

you can never go wrong with learning some scales.

pentatonic and major are usually good to start off with
