I'm currently starting a band with some friends... I'm the vocals but I currently don't own any gear. It's not a big problem because we have access to some if needed... but I was wondering what exactly I'm going to need? I was planning on buying a combo off musician's friend. It came with a mic, a mixer, a portable pa system 2 speakers etc. Do I really need the PA right off?
How bad is the sound quality if you sing right through a guitar/bass amp?
Basically, I'm just wondering what gear I need as the vocalist.
Thanks

The quality will be acceptable if you are just starting band work, but be careful, it will ruin the amp, at first subtly, but very audibly in the long run. If you must use one, use a bass amp, or better, a keyboard amp. It will be wise to get a PA system, this will allow you to attain much more volume, and to be very much self-sufficient in term of giggging.

Thanks, dude.
Is a portable PA enough? A friend of mine was telling me a PA system is something the whole band needs to purchase and isn't just the singer's responsibility. This is the combo I was thinking about getting... http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/s=packaged/search/detail/base_pid/630130/

Would be good for starter band practices and possibly small shows. You might outgrow it quick.
Never used the AudioChoice PA, but I recommend the Kustom (http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=live/s=packaged/search/detail/base_pid/632200/) one. It's basically the same thing and same price. Kustom makes good cheap(not in a bad way) quality stuff. But maybe others have used it and like the AudioChoice one.
Or you could get the step up Kustom one Right away.
