picked up the september ish of DRUM! about a month ago and spent the next month until the new one came out reading about mike portnoy and dream theater and i was interested... on saturday i think, i went out and bought Octavarium at tower records...:amaze: I must say i was skeptical of portnoys drumming abilities at first (Since i had never heard him play) WOW! This album ROCKS SO HARD!! Not just from a drummer's perspective either... the guitar .. bass.. synth.. everything sounds totallly amazing! Dream theater is now one of my favorite bands... planning to get either 6 degrees of inner turbulence or train of thought next...any recommendations? thoughts on Octavarium? Thanx! ROCK ON DREAM THEATER!!!!!!! :p

Get Awake. It is there best album IMO. Than maybe Train of thought if you want something heavier.

Octavarium is allegedly one of their weaker albums, so you should only get more impressed. I personally can't stand La Brie's vocals in that setting and dislike all their work, but I'm glad you enjoy it. :)

R&M has a huge thread on them too if you're interested (started by SonorKen).

EDIT: Whereabouts are you from in Denver?

Yeah Scenes from a Memory is imo no doubt their best album.

But, I'm covering 'Stream of Conciousness' from Train of Thought with my band, all 11 minutes of it, including keyboards. I'll try and post audio of it as soon as I can record it.

   It always makes me smile when I hear him try to scream at the back end of the title song. He sounds like Gollum.

Scenes from a Memory.

Octavarium isn't without it's charm, but certainly not among the best DT Albums.

Scenes From a Memory, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulance and Images and Words are my Favorites.

Get Train of Thought next. Then Awake. Then The Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. I like their heavier stuff, so I'm a bit biased.

I've heard four songs from Octavarium, and while that massive title-track is just ok, and The Root of All Evil doesn't quite live up to it's two predecessors, These Walls is a good listen and Panic Attack is a goddamn amazing, speeding beast of a song.

Dreamtheater (and Liquid Tension Experiment also actually) are amazing as a whole. I definatly consider those guys "master songwriters".

The parts they come up with and the way they string them together is really impressive imo. Certainly considering the very small timeframe in wich both LTE albums were written and recorded. Just a matter of weeks.
Truelly amazing.

Falling to Infinity hasn't had a mention yet... Lines in the Sand, Trial of Tears, Hollow Years, Hell's Kitchen, Peruvian Skies...

...and the all time best DT song IMO New Millenium!

I also agree both Liquid Tension albums are awesome and anyone who listens to DT must check out the albums!

No, I'm just outside it. I think I'm in the Smoky Hill district, but I go to private school anyways.

My school is actually just off Parker and Arapahoe. Called Regis, I'm sure your friend knows about it. I'm also pretty sure he/she would laugh if they hear that, because that's just what people do.

IMO Metropolis Part II - Scenes from a Memory is DT's best. I saw them live in Hammersmith on tuesday, they played a great set and covered the whole Dark Side of the Moon album. It was rather good.

Root of all evil is a great opener  my band are working on covering it.

few of my favourite Dream Theater Songs:

Blind Faith
Erotomania
Fatal Tragedy (one of my alltime favourites)
Hell's Kitchen
Hollow Years (this song rules)
Home
New Millenium
Panic Attack (well i dunno... it's the only octavarium one i've heard so i may as well include it)
Pull Me Under
Take The Time
The Dance Of Eternity

that's not all but a lot of them

I've enjoyed all of their albums, which is why I have all of their studio releases now. I don't just look at it all from a drumming aspect, I look at it with a great musical aspect. That's why some of my favorite songs include stuff like "Misunderstood" and New Millenium". They also get pretty crafty when they make these albums.....the album "Octavarium" as a whole has a lot of meaning and symbolism in it, including the artwork.

To the threadstarter, I say check out as much as you can, but try to pick up Scenes From A Memory, Awake, and Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence first. I will admit, although it's not their "best" according to some people, I am partial to "Falling Into Infinity".

Hey, if anyone is interested in knowing one of the things I am doing at college, I am gonna try to arrange "The Root of All Evil" for a Marimba Quartet :thumb:

I forgot to mention that I absolutely love the song "A Change of Seasons" as well.....musically and lyrically it's one of the best I have heard. This is one of those songs in which Portnoy's musicianship really shines.
