Request: Fade to Black

hey..needing help on the intro solo (that kirk plays)...where it's like:

..just can't seem to play it fast enough, i think it's because i'm trying to down pick each note...which is pretty stupid of me...but if somebody can like, indicate which note to up/down pick on to give me some guidance, it'd be greatly appreciated! p.s. -- i have the rest of the solo down, just this one part is killing me

please help!

Alternate pick it man, starting with a downstroke on the first note and continue with alternate. If you still can't play it full speed...PRACTISE PRACTISE PRACTISE.

If you can play at it the full speed then should I practice the solo by playing them at slow speed? I watched the guitar lesson video and it said speed comes along when playing at slow speed. Is that right?
