Pot is short for potentiometer. It's an electrical term. Essentially, it is a knob on your guitar/amp.

Should I really have to explain this? Turn the knob and find out.

I like to think of it as a dimmer switch on a light, it regulates the amount of volume/treble/whatever that affects the signal just like a dimmer switch regulates the amount of current that will power the light bulb.

"Good" is a relative term. "Good" for a newbie? Decent I would imagine. "Good" for a seasoned player? No.

Yeah I was a little suspicious of the 900-some posts, but whatever. And jackson111, I would say your guitar is fine assuming that you are a beginner.
