View Full Version : Buying first cymbals

Hi, I'm pretty new to drumming, and I want to get a cymbal for Christmas. My main problem is that I don't know much about drums, so I don't really know which kind of cymbal I should get.
I currently have 2, a 20 inch Medium Ride, and a 20 inch unknown cymbal (It might be a Chinese one, I don't know cause I bought this from a friend, and he had it since a long time, nothing written on it either)
Basically, what I'm looking for is a cymbal that could "replace" the High-Hats during a song. Instead of hitting high-hats, you hit that one. It gives a "splash" sound instead of a little "click". But the "splash" shouldn't last too long... I'd like to know what kind of cymbal could do that job. I also have a maximum of around 125 USD.
I'm sorry, It's really hard for me to say what I'm looking for in english, as it's not my main language.
If anyone understood me, please answer me :)
Thanks :)

sounds like you want a stack, like a portnoy stack?
get yourself a 10" wuhan china and a 10" wuhan splash. that should be like $50 tops, leaving you cash for the cymbal arm to mount it on. on the stand, put the splash on the stand and then put the china on top of it, lip facing up. tighten 'til it sounds good to you, and enjoy :)

i wouldnt suggest trying to "replace" a hi-hat. but i think you may want to look into a ribbon crasher, i think that has the application your after.

Yep thats the way to do it, the real MP staxs are a giant rip off.

Yes, I do have a hi-hat and I tried to play it open, but it's not the sound I'm looking for. I'm not trying to replace the Hi-Hats physically, but in a song, in stead of playing like...
H|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-|
on the hi-hats, I'm looking for a cymbal that could do the same thing, but that have a kinda fast decay and that doesn't ring out too loud.

A custom fast crash is like a 16" or maybe a 17" is an awsome cymbal, though I'm not a fan of the smaller (16") sizes.

It's a Max Portnoy signature cymbal(s) by SABIAN. It's a china kang stacked on top of a splash

i just dont see how it works. is it the splash inside of the china like a china/splash?
Or is it the splash with an inverted china on top so that the bell bit on both cymbals are touching?

the china is smaller than the splash and is inverted on top of the splash which is not inverted..

The MP stax sounds quite good in the DT songs but its overpriced...

THreadstarter, if I were you I would concentrate on getting a basic cymbal setup first before going into stacks and all that...
Hats - ride - crash. Maybe even two crashes.
Stacks are fun and all, but get a basic setup first, it'll serve you a lot better.
My 2 cents

Hey anytime, I found myself in the same situation, 6 months ago. The fast crash delivered the perfect sound for me when I wasn't playing the hats (it has real nice and short decay). To rockindrummer, yea Im not a fan of smaller sizes either, the lowest I will go is 16''. But to the thread starter let us know how it is when you get it, because it is a great cymbal.:thumb:

here bud, like this: http://www.music123.com/Sabian-Mike-Portnoy-Max-Stax-i58028.music
depending on how tight you have it, you can get either a "tchchchhhchch" sound or just a "tchh", which could be used like a hi-hat.
go with the wuhan's tho, since they're dirt cheap.

The MP stax sounds quite good in the DT songs but its overpriced...I've tried them in real life, did not like them, I like the old ones, you know the ones he used before he had "max" stax. I think they were 8"HH Kang/8" AAX Splash, 10" HH kang/10" AAX Splash, 12" AAX Mini china/ 14" Sig Encore Crash
