metal band? well than that means distortion so, learn barre chords

also learn your scales, since metal songs are that much better with a good solo

the best scale to start with is the pentatonic scale and learn chromatics and tapping

Just make all your songs go "chugga chugga wee chugga wee wee," add a couple 1/16th notes in there and you're good to go.

Galloping triplets are useful. They make a boring 1/8 rhythm into something a bit more exciting. Just dont overuse them or you'll be called Maiden copycats.

WTF?! the same could be said about jazz. I could just play a IV-V-I progression and wank mindlessly in the harmonic minor scale... Playing good metal does require skill, just as you would say playing good jazz does. So don't be a judgemental douche.

every style has its difficulties.

It really depends on the band and how they want to play, not the genre.

^TS: I believe youve been playing guitar for a while but not for a long time. So I would suggest practicing what the people above have stated as well as learn a few songs. Create some riffs, and learn a few basic techniques harmonics, palm muting.... etc. If its metal.

i beg to differ, when you get into stuff like dragonforce that is melodic metal and that kinda stuff, then it needs skill, cuz for you to have to write that kinda stuff and then make it sound good at those speeds, that's got to be SOME skill.
