I've been really exploring the world of post-punk lately. Gang Of Four, Echo & Bunnymen, Joy Division....all that sort of stuff. I've also been meaning to check out stuff like Public Image Ltd. and The Birthday Party. Since it's a part of punk rock, I figured it would technically belong in here.

Anyone here like post-punk? If so, what artists? Generally, gimme all your thoughts on the post-punk movement.

I like post-punk and many other people here too. Maybe try The Minutemen? You should know them already and if not, it's an urgency for you to check them out.

Also Wire (album pink flag) and I don't know if Devo is post-punk but check out the album "Q:Are We Not Men A:We Are Devo"

Mmm, Minutemen are great, I have Double Nickels On The Dime. Plus, everyone loves Devo.

Yes, it's true. Then try Pink Flag, I love that album, and I don't know much more apart from what you listed. If Anxious Mo-Fo comes here you'll have a good post-punk list.

It's like punk with bad lyrics. Meck.

Proto-punk, not post-punk. :) Same sort of alliterative genre title, but different genre, which can make things quite confusing. Anyway, post-punk can be absolutely great. Bands like Devo, Minutemen, Wire, Joy Division, Gang Of Four, Public Image Ltd., Mission Of Burma...they're all very good bands. It's good to see that post-punk's so clearly influencing a lot of new music in the UK at the moment. It doesn't live up to the stuff around in the '70s and '80s, but a lot of it is good stuff.

There's what i mixed up. Thank you sir.

I like post-punk. Except Joy Division, can't stand them. And a lot of it gets kind of old and repeative after a few listens.

Joy Division is allright

Post-Punk is very varied, and there are alot of really good bands.

Essential albums (In my opinion)

Wire-Pink Flag
Gang of Four-Entertanment!
Minutemen-Double Nickles on the Dime
Mission of Burma-Vs.
Joy Division-Unknown Pleasures
The Fall- Live at the Witch Trials

Whats so great about post-punk is that there are tons of bands with ranging styles, and its doesn't have a certain sound, its just punk with the band's own spin on it.

I didn't like Live at the Witch trials because it reminded me of Crass. And besides the JD album, I like all the one's Dom mentioned.

Anxious

Live at the Witch Trials is way differnt than their other albums, its their most punk oriented. I'll give you it that it sounds like Crass though.

I like some post-punk:
Joy Division

The Cure (heard it called goth as well)
The Swans (have heard them labeled as art rock not sure on this one.)

Talking Heads and Sonic Youth are two excellent New York post punk bands. Sonic Youth are a more experimental band, but there's definitely some punk influence.

And the Minutemen and Mission of Burma are essential.

Sonic Youth rock, though like Mo-fo said, art rock is a crappy label for a band. I like how they draw from not only post-punk, but regular punk, noise rock, no wave, etc.

The Cure are definitely my favourite band that fits here. I have Boys Don't Cry and The Head on the Door, and I want to get Disintegration. A lot of the stuff on Boys Don't Cry is just pop-punk. But a lot of post-punk bands just played punk at the beginning of their career to get an audience, and after 1980 "when punk died" they moved away from the punk scene and made their own music. Sort of annoying.

But yeah, Double Nickels On The Dime is an album which I struggle to find fault with, it's that good.

I fully endorse this statement.

I never got into The Cure that much...I really respect Robert Smith (his rejuvination of the career of Siouxshie and the Banshees was great), but The Cure's music seems to be a classic case of having some absolutely great songs, but a string of really mediocre albums. Disintegreation and Pornography always get cited as their best, but they don't do much for me. Their more recent stuff is pretty horrible as well.
I usually hear Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me as their best...I think it's pretty good

Yesterday I ordered Ragin' Full On, by fIREHOSE. That's the band the two remaining members of the Minutemen formed after D Boon's death. They're another excellent band.

George Hurley is a really adept drummer. He doesn't get enough credit, since tons of praise is heaped on Mike Watt (and rightly so). But George is really awesome as well, and he's one of the drummer's that have had a big influence on my playing.
