View Full Version : The Story Behind "The Note"

Seriously, what gives?

Dude wakes up, waters his plants.

His neighbor shows him his new flying invention, and points out how high he can fly with his patent pending wings.

Dude takes his boat out for a spin, and his girl gives him a gift of a ring on a necklace.

Dude walks down the sidewalk, all is right with the world, he stops to pet a happy dog. Suddenly, a window shatters and out comes Burning Man. Dude recoils in terror at first, but then Burning Man hands him a note and runs away down the sidewalk. Dude reads the note and is horrified.

He gives the necklace back to his girl. She grovels and cries like the trick-*** ho she be.

He hacks his boat to pieces with an ax and tears his neighbor's prized wings to bits.

Dude burns his house down and kills himself.

Is there something I'm missing?

The Note is meant to be anything your mind chooses it to be that would cause you to ruin your life like depicted in the comic.

Wow, I never knew The Note was so complex.

But why does his friend have wings? Are they ambiguously metaphoric? Am I trying to read too much into it?

I'M IN THE BIG BLIND! WITH AN AVERAGE STACK AND AN AGRESSIVE IMAGE. THE FOUR SEAT LIMPS RIGHT AFTER ME, NEVER A GOOD SIGN!

More people should like that song. It's awesome how they show the hands progression in the booklet. When ever I play I always starting the song when I have the hand.

Wings? Donno really, going to heaven? I assume you're trying to read too much into as it is meant to just be taken however the reader wants to take it. Or atleast that is my opinion/what I've heard.

Best lyrics from The Note:

There is no mistake that I'm not free to make
All because of six strings stretched across a board

Today, anyway. I find new favorites every time I listen to it, like any good album.

The way I always looked at it was from the front to the back. He does all these bad things, and then the dude gives him the note, and he's like, I should change my life. But now that I look back on it, your way makes more sense.

It's probably one of those lateral thinking puzzles. The guys in the band probably have a really clever solution to it, to what the note said, but you couldn't work it out even if you were on acid.

'One For the Boys' track 3 off The Note
I’m in the big blind
With an average stack and an aggressive image
The four seat limps right after me never a good sign
He’s been beating up the table showing down strong cards all night
The maniac in the nine throws in another raise he loves to raise
Confusing foolishness for courage and swinging on a vine
I peek at my cards (3 diamond, 2 diamond)
And decide I’m gonna defend the four seat does the same
And we all buckle in for our favorite ride
(flop: J club , 2spade , 8 heart)
I’m first to act and bet the pot hoping to win it right then and there
But the 4 seat calls and the maniac folds
And I’m out of position with a lowly pair of
two’s The dealer burns and turns
It is in this half second where life becomes perfect
The mind a weapon
Tomorrow's worries and yesterdays mistakes they crumble and fall away
For now I’m on the wire
(turn: 3 heart )
I check, the four bets
The trap snaps shut as I push my whole stack into the middle
He shakes his head to let me know
He doesn’t have those dreaded pocket 8s
And sighs, “I have to call”
(Seat four shows : K heart, J heart )
The river comes that sexy, sexy Ace of spades
And all is well in the world
Now you wanna take a good man down?
Send him back to his wallet to steam off another 500?
Well you just wink and show him threes up

The Note has about 4 songs that rule, and a bunch of "meh" songs, and then a few stinkers.

I really don't like the slower, half-time songs, because I find it really irritating when hardcore bands play an entire song as a breakdown, but don't change the vocals whatsoever.

That's pretty much all MLIW do in their songs. Having said that, I found out today that MLIW is probably the best biking music i've heard.
