to tune to drop D, imagine your tuning your guitar normally.
You tune the 6th string by playing the 5th fret to match the 5th string when played open string, and so on. Apart from the 3rd string which is the fourth fret.
like so...
e|--------------------------------------------0---
b|----------------------------------0-------5-----
g|------------------------0-------4---------------
d|--------------0-------5-------------------------
a|-----0------5-----------------------------------
e|---5--------------------------------------------
for drop d you do this...
e|--------------------------------------------0---
b|----------------------------------0-------5-----
g|------------------------0-------4---------------
d|--------------0-------5-------------------------
a|-----0------5-----------------------------------
D|---7--------------------------------------------
the 6th string is tuned so that the seventh fret matches the 5th string when played open string.
And there it is tuned to drop D......simple.....

Perfect. But once you get the ear for it you can tune down by just playing an open Drop D power chord.......you'll start to hear it. Then you can start playin' away.

I drop my D by playing 1st and 3rd strings open together and lowering the E until they sound the same, but do whatever works for you.
For the first example it might be worth mentioning that you have to drop your bottom string to D first.

There should be a stickied tuning thread.

well, real drop C tuning is accually CADGBe
but almost all of the time when people (my self included) say drop c the meen drop D one step down CGCFAD (cant even thing of a song that is tuned cadgbe)
so the answer is yes, but its more difficult to do by ear, cause tuning your 6 string down 2 steps and all you other strings down 1. As aposed to drop D were you olny tune your six string down one step DADGBe
i recomend you buy a chromatic tuner if you gonna kick some drop d one step down (or as i call it drop c)

Or tune to Drop-D and capo on the 2nd fret. Drop-C can be a little harsh on some necks.

Hmmm. I replied but my post never made it here... Drop C, I believe is Drop D down a whole step. Samick has already answered this question, now... damn interweb.

that is NOT drop C, because drop c is LOWER then drop d, not higher. Your way would create Drop E. And i guess it couldn't be called drop anymore, is it is higher then standard tuning

To tune in drop C your first going to have to lower the rest of your strings a whole step. Then just like the diagram at the top shows, hit the 7th fret on the six string until it sounds like the Open 5th string.!
