That was a pretty cool movie. I haven't seen it for a while, so my explanation might be wrong but I'll try.

Bale killed the boy as he was driving his red mustang or whatever it was. After that, he couldn't sleep out of guilt of the hit and run and not bringing himself in to the cops. He begins to see things like "Ivan" who drives his red car that he reported as totalled after the hit and run. He imagines becoming friendly with the waitress, who is actually the boy's mother (and obviously doesn't talk at all to the real waitress as shown at the end). Then I guess the "boy" (that's already dead) gets badly hurt while he's watching him and somehow that brings him to reporting himself to the cops. Then, finally, a year after the accident, he can fall asleep since the guilt is lifted off his shoulders.

That's probably way off.. but oh well.

I've downloaded it but not watched it yet, it looks amazing. Christian Bale is a great actor. I'll get back to you when I've watched it :thumb:

SPOILER!
Don't look if you don't want to know!

He's not slept for a year, he doesn't know why because he has blocked out the memory of commiting a crime ; the killing of a little boy.
So it begins to become too much for him, although he doesn't realise it. He begins seeing things ; namely Ivan and believing there's a conspiracy against him. The date with the woman didn't happen, him going back to her place did not happen, they are all hilusinations his subconscious is using to make him remember.

He envisions Ivan as the cause of his problems, the reason all the things have been happening to him when infact Ivan IS part of him, the ugly part that has been fogotten, supressed. Only after killing Ivan does he begin to realise that Ivan isn't who, or what Bale's character thinks he is.

In the end we and Bale's character realise that Ivan isn't the man causing the trouble and that Ivan can't exist, which in turn brings him to the conclusion that he had killed the boy in a hit and run. Throughout the film Bale's character has had to choose the easy route or the difficult route, always opting for the easier, less confronting route but in the end he realises that he must choose the hard route and give himself up. Confessing to the hit and run of the boy he had commited to one year previously, he can finally sleep knowing that he's done the right thing.

I get the feeling I've missed something out but I'm not sure what...

Yeah, you guys pretty much summed it up.

I'd just have said that Ivan is his inner demon and in killing, "slaying his demons", he finally comes to terms with what he's done.

As for the film, I think it's one of the best things produced in Hollywood in years (if it was produced there). Bale is easily one of my favourite actors, so talented. He even lost 60+ pounds for the role and had to be stopped from losing more. Psycho :-\

His commitment to changing himself for a role is both mad and admirable plus : he can actually act.
