Hold the 4th fret on the 6th string and make the 5th sting sound like it. The hold the 5th fret on the 6th string and loosen the 6th sting til it sounds like the 5th. Hold the 5th fret on the 5th string and tune the 4th string to sound like it. Do the same with the 4th. When you get to the 3rd sring, you hold the 4th fret on the 3rd string and make the 2nd sound like it. Then hold the 5th fret on the 2nd string and make the 1st string sound similar.
If you have a chromatic(sp) tuner always helps too.

Hi,
Do you use an eletric tuner to tune your guitar? Tuning your guitar isn't always going to be as acurate as 'turn the knob 90 degree's'. This is due to the way you've strung it, age of strings etc.
Unless you can tune it by ear you will need an electric tuner. On the electric tuner tune your strings like this:
E ----> D#/Eb
B ----> A#/Bb
G ----> F#/Gb
D ----> C#/Db
A ----> A#/Gb
E ---> D#/Eb
So you tune to E string to a D sharp (D#) or E flat (Eb).
The reason you tune it to either is because they are both the same note, therefore it doesn't matter. Some guitar tunes might not allow you to select a flat note to tune it too.
Hope this helps.

I dont know if this helps any, but I use an electric tuner, and ive always held my finger on the first fret of any string and tuned it to where the tuner says it is in standard. It may sound wierd, but i can assure you it does work fine.
thanks for all your help.

Scales tell you what notes you can play that will sound in key. Each key has 7 notes out of the 12 possible notes. That being said there are 12 keys, you could list more than 12 because some have more than one name ( A#=Bb)
On sheet music a key signature shows you what notes are sharp or flat in the key. For example the key of C has the notes C,D,E,F,G,A, and B. There are no sharps or flats in the key of C so a key signature would have no sharps or flats in it. The key of G has one sharp, F#. So the notes are G,A,B,C,D,E and F#.
Scales are also used for soloing, you know what you have to work with.
