I dunno if you count the whole "grunge" thing as alternative but it is often mentioned in this forum. If you do I guess Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Mudhoney have some good guitaring.

Dinosaur Jr seems the most obvious one people have said, Smashing Pumpkins also have some awesome lead play.

I wouldn't say I'm a fanboy, and I can say that if I want. Television eat scrote in my opinion, and you can go and do the same.

What are you saying, that grunge is worse than punk? What is this, genre fights now? I won't go into the genres, but don't go telling people that their music is worse than yours for no reason.

There is a reason that Television and other bands aren't widely known. I'll leave you to fill in the gaps.

Anyway, this is an alt guitar thread...

Anyway, this is an alt guitar thread...Anyone who is even moderately familiar with music outside of MTV knows who Television are. Marquee Moon is also ranked #128 on the Rolling Stone top albums of all time while no Pearl Jam album cracks the top 200. I'm sorry, either you haven't heard of them or you are just misinformed, but Television aren't underground.

Mailman
10-28-2005, 08:54 PM
Television isn't widely known because the masses can't tolerate anything that's not verse-chorus-verse and out in three minutes.

He gave no reasons for disliking Tom Verlaine, so I gave no reasons for disliking his Pearl Jam crap.
You are too caught up in being indie to notice anything vaguely in the mainstream. I might not like Television that much, but I own their album. It's not widely known because of Verlaine's annoying vocals, and because it's not really a 'punk' album and it was released in '77 with a lot of competition.

As to Scott Herren, they are liked by Rolling Stone, but as the type of mag that Rolling Stone is they would have to be. You can't use that as an aguing point, its not your opinion (unless of course you rank ever album released in the same order.) I suppose you agree that Dusty in Memphis by Dusty Springfield is better than Marquee Moon because it is ranked higher in RS?

Calling me a fanboy and then refusing to accept my opinion at all on a band you like is hypocrisy at its worst. I can understand why you don't like Pearl Jam, it might be because they are too "mainstream" for you, or because Riot Act sucked, or for any other reason. You, however, can't seem to understand why I don't like Television.

The point wasn't that I would rank them at that spot on a list, but that they are well known enough to get a spot that high on the list, and pretty much anyone who knows anything about music has heard Marquee Moon the song if not the album. And you got into this mess looking rediculous messageboard laughing at a band.

I dislike Pearl Jam because they suck. I have no problem with the mainstream.

Don't give me your "you can't seem to understand why I don't like Television" crap. Your reason for disliking them was "HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA".
You still don't get it. That wasn't my reason for disliking them. What I'm saying is that you can't seem to accept that someone can not like Television, and that you are better than me for liking them. If that's your opinion, then you can go and get ****ed, but if we understand each other, then I'm ok with that. :)

Technical ability is only half of being a good guitarist.

Not when it's something as subjective as who you think is more emotional. If we were talking about influence or impact on the world of guitar playing, then we could argue.
