Not really. I like the odd song but as a whole it's a meh. Listen to sufjan stevens or something.
Oh yeah and some people here hate him with a passion.

I think he's ok, not up the whole hype that he has. He has a few songs I like, specifically "Bowl Of Oranges."
It must be annoying having a cult-like following of teenage girls.

That performance was absolutely horrible, and that's coming from a fan.
Conor Oberst rises above so many other musicians as an amazingly original and prolific songwriter. Heaps of critics call him "whiny" and whatnot, but the guy clearly has an uncommonly strong tie to his music and a natural talent rarely seen. And while many of his early songs are pretty pathetic, remember that they were for the most part recorded before he even hit nineteen—and even then the music is honest as hell.

I find him boring and though I've only been a musician about four years I'm confident my music is more interesting, and I'm 19. Also, I've never heard a critic say a single word against him, he's a critic's posterboy. I'd say he has no natural talent, and none that he's acquired yet, but that's me.

I'm not a huge fan of Conor, but I do believe that's pretty harsh. The kid can write some pretty bitchin lyrics, his tunes are pretty developed and he certainly has skill. Guess I am a critic.
The teenage-indie-girl fanbase is rather annoying, but I'd rather a girl loving Bright Eyes than Green Day, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne or any variation thereof.

I like it.
Its.. different. His voice gets annoying, but in certain songs it adds to the effect and brings more feeling to the song eg. 'The first day of my life' and 'Lua'.
I think he could write a bit more variety of songs though, they're all slow, depressing songs.

I have to make up for all the overratedness by despising him inproportionately :)
As for lyrics, lyrics are always so subjective, my gf has me read them all the time because she loves him, but none ever grab me or mean anything to me, so basically I see them as artsy trash as opposed to just trash. And his voice is terrible.
P.S. Green Day is better than any of the bands you listed by a mountain slide, and I don't even like them that much.

He did tour for I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, but it wasn't quite as long as the Digital Ash in a Digital Urn tour, which I'm glad I didn't go see. All of the Bright Eyes albums that I own are great, except for that pesky Digital Ash, which just grows worse over time. There are a few decent songs on that, I guess.

I started listening to Bright eyes because they're rather praised down there at S&L, and some of the best writers have their usernames influenced by their songs (APS and bowl of oranges).
At first I wasn't that attracted. It felt too...acoustic-y for me. But I got to the lyrics and it all pretty much resolved to yes, Conor writes amazingly.

If anyone has doubts to his songwriting I suggest you check out the song Landlocked Blues. I'll link to the lyrics and if you want any mp3s IM me.
As for those girls "who 9 months ago liked Simple Plan," ect. That happens with every music group that makes it big. You'll get alot of people who just jump on the bandwagon because it is good music but they just use it as a social vector. As for the people who loathe him, dont be a hipocrite and hate just cause you dislike those who listen to whatever people tell them to.

All I am saying is it is very likely that I will be incapable of seeing the quality of this music after being exposed to such rabid hate for the band by others before hearing any of their material. As of now my position is neutral. Speaking of neutral, I got Neutral Milk Hotel's In The Aeroplane Over the Sea yesterday. It's amazing. But that's off topic. Uh..
