Out of all those that haven't been done yet, Santana's self titled is all I know/have in full. I only started listening to it recently, so I'm not taking it on, I'd get it all wrong.

Maybe I could do Violetine - Small Speaker Joyland, but no one knows it, so no one will care.

I don't have much incentive to write something, especially when most of what I know well enough to write about is too obscure or unknown that only 5 people are going to look at it...

It will be approximately 13 reviews. I will simultaneously be reviewing the entire discographies of Dimmu Borgir and Behemoth. Periodically I'll be submitting one of each together, chronologically. For example, tomarrow I'll submit both of their first albums, and then a while later I'll do both of their second albums and so on until I've done all of the albums for both. Various un-planned reviews may be scattered throughout, but I'll be focusing on those two. It will be quite a journalistic exploration.

How do you guys feel about swearing in reviews? Stay away from the big three and you'll be fine.

This Final fantasy review is proving tough, it's hard enough reviewing an album of that length. But I've got to make it accessible to both Final Fantasy nerds and Sputnik readers alike.

It'd be nice to have someone to proof read it and check over it for me, so that I don't lose sight of the main points of discussion. >_>

Man sputnik is hard to get around, I need more availability of links to user cp, edit my reviews, etc. A drop down box that has all the main pages and user settings like on the forums would be great on there.

I think it's like using "I", "me" or "my". It can be ok, but it's best left alone. Those things can work, but they generally make reviews look unprofessional.

I don't think I've sworn in my reviews themselves, but I've definitely dropped a few bombs in comments because of idiots.

The only time I've sworn in reviews is when I'm quoting lyrics.

I don't have a problem with swearing, but only if the writer's intention is to showcase informal diction for some reason.

Swearing sometimes must be, it's just a normal piece of every day life.

I'm feeling really bad, I think I might be coming down with the flu. Which sucks, as I have a job interview on Tuesday. :( But it's still almost two days left. Still enough time to get well again, or at least shape up into a somewhat usable condition

What's the big deal if people use vB code in their reviews? I wasn't freaking out when people started bolding or using color in theirs, so I don't see what the issue is here.

"Because the review's good, Jom!"

Well, no ****, Sherlock. Not everyone's first reviews suck.

I think a lot of the problem with people visually sprucing up reviews is that is tricks idiots into assuming that review is good because of a more professional presentation.

That annoys me. People see a really long review with lots of bold and italicized text and immediately go "INSANELY good review!!!", while completely ignoring the content. I don't think I'll get it.

Holy hell, this is this users first review.

http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=4487&genreid=12

In response to many of you that believe that I have plagarised that particular review, and are at least holding suspicion against me I would just like to point out that I did not and never will plagarise a review off another site. While this still shows that I may have and some of you most likely will think, "well that proves nothing", I would also like to clarify that my reviews broaden much further then the boundaries of this particular site.

I have made reviews on art pieces at DeviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/). While those reviews that I have done there are not anything like the Slayer one, I was recently introduced to a way of reviewing that simply used metaphors to explain a piece of art or poem, or piece of music.

In addition for Art majors and English majors this year I have had to make many reviews, this giving me better experience in review writing. Just because the review may seem advanced either because you think the English is or of the format I have made it in, including all the italacised and underlined text doesn't mean I just took it from someone else.

About one year ago I made a review for the same album that had to be made into two posts because of the 10,000-character limit. I went away from this site for some time and came back to find that all the reviews were shifted over to sputnik music only to find that my Slayer review wasn't moved over. Now that was some time ago, and thankfully I had saved that review into word which I still have all with its original code. That particular review was a song by song, and since then I had decided that any future reviews that I did would be in a overall album review format, simply because I prefer reading and writing in that method.

Again I would never take away anyone's review and claim it as my own. That's for you to decide though. I am not upset about this and I do take into account that you probably receive many plagirised reviews from people who have just appeared on the site. I was just trying to make things a little clearer.

12-04-2005, 11:11 PM

I'm just curious as to why TxT reviews are discouraged by so many people here. I know that when I read a review, I like to get a feel for which songs I would like and not like, and TxT's can provide a good description of what goes on in individual tracks. I guess now I do a sort of hybrid TxT and non-TxT thing, but I was just wondering where the problems with the TxT format came from.

EDIT: By the way, I'm a fan of some vB coding in the reviews. For some reason, bolding song titles seems a lot less cluttered than using quotation marks. Plus, you're always supposed to italacize the album names. I've always thought italics and bolding have helped make the reviews look more professional.

TxT reviews don't describe the album. They give analysis of each indivdual song and can be useful for the reasons you mentioned. But for the album as a whole, they don't explain various aspects or traits the album has. It dissects it so specifically that I think the big picture is missed compeltely.

Lucky for me here in Australia our summer nitghts lie around 20 to 25, and during the day at about this time of year doesn't go higher than 30.

Tulsa is supposed to get a lot of snow tomorrow, which happens about once a year. Maybe no school. I doubt it though.

That's too bad, we measure degrees in F over here.

And it's been right around 0 for the past few weeks.

Mx has been having some serious problems with account hacking, including that of mods.

No, probably not. You'd be banned if you were. Jom was hacked though.

Do you only get hacked if you click on a link someone put up intentionly ment to hack?

Woah, cool to see someone from the bass forum in here. You guys should really venture in here some more.

Kinda strange how I play bass, but have never even looked at the bass forum.

I play guitar, but I never go into the guitar forum. There's nothing for me there anyway.

I went in, posted I like 4 strings over 5 and got out of there.

No threads nabbed my attention so I doubt I'll be returning.

Unless I have a specific question I don't find the instrument forums appealing at all.

I'm getting burnt out having to listen to System of a Down for hours on end every day for the last 4-5 days. What sucks is I don't think I'll finish the Mezmerize review for another couple weeks. I want to make it close to perfect.

Shadows

Nothing is perfect.

Why are you trying to drive the album into your head?

'Tis why I said close to perfect/ ;)

Why are you trying to drive the album into your head?

Not, just listening to the album over and over again while I write the review, which is so far at least 5 hours. :-/

Shadows

Holy ****, how long is the review? It isn't 12 pages is it?

Sometimes simplicity is key. :)

Storm In A Teacup
12-06-2005, 04:46 PM
4 pages :-/ I've re-written it about 5 times now.

At one point in the review I talk about BYOB and Question! as singles and that itself is a whole page in M Word.

seems a bit too bulky, but if you think you can pull off such a big review go for it :thumb:

I plan on it. :)

Right now it seems that it is going to be in chapters.

1. Introduction
2. The Music
3. The lyrics
4. The Vocals
5. The Singles
6. Overall/Final Thoughts of the Album

Again, this is the direction the review seems to be going at the moment. I might just combine the lyrics and vocals into one paragrapgh though. This all could easily change.

Sweet. I plan to write a Nile review that's as epic as the music I'm writing about.

I've purchased a big memory upgrade for the server that should hopefully help things out a lot with regards to load time.

It's been up for a while.

Please, for the love of god, someone review jazz albums.

I check announcements once about every two weeks.

It looks like I'm forming a band with the other bassist in orchestra. He and another guy are playing guitar and I'm playing bass.

They already have some songs written and are wanting to record a demo.

Here are the songs I think we're going to cover as well.

QOTSA-Little Sister, Burn the Witch
Cream-Sitting on Top of the World, White Room
The Who-My Generation
Grateful Dead-I Know You Rider
Green Day-Jesus of Suburbia
Plus some others

Also, I wish they were into more current hard rock stuff and some metal, but alas.

Shadows

Who are you talking about?

We need more metal reviewers. I understand that we have many people who regularly review metal albums, but I could count the number of people who know most of the stuff I do on the fingers of one hand. I hate it. :(

/poor Deutsch, I think

Upcoming plans: After I finish Behemoth and Dimmu, I'll do all of Nile's albums, Monolith Deathcult, Haemoth, CoB - HCDR, Wintersun, and maybe some Spawn of Possession or Immolation.

EDIT: Phlegton, the vocalist of the Spanish death metal band Wormed, ha recently launched a site for his art studio. This guy does some damn good work, so check it out.
