I've written two 5 stars. I had a third, but it was my first review ever and when I looked back it seemed so biased I couldn't believe what I had done.

Sputnikmusic has moved in an oscillating matter over the past few months. We're approaching its one-year anniversary since its inception, and it's constantly rode a wave of good/bad/good/bad. The amplitude of the waves also varies greatly.

For what it's worth, I think Med and Damrod are doing the best job that they can given the circumstances on Sputnikmusic. But it's tough to only have two people plus a number of regulars to try to restore order when the idiots outnumber us. The best we can do as regs is to just try to continue to exemplify the characteristics of what it is to be a good contributor, and just hope that people fall in line.

Med was on here a little as well as Damrod, but as Dam said he had a place to go with bandmates and crud like that, so in essence it is rather silly to not have a third mod. It would definitely not be overboard.

I wasn't offended, your comment, though most critisizing, was the least offensive to me compared to others that said it sucked.

Shadows
11-20-2005, 09:04 PM
I understand how frustrating it can be when people say your review sucked and give no reason, or when they bitch about pointless details (such as there being too many reviews for one album).

I think an American mod would help. Med and Damrod are in close areas, and both European, so consequently they're both sleeping or away while mx is getting the most action.

Use the brackets [], not (). The parentheticals are just for reference.

(b)Bolded text(/b) = Bolded Text

(i)Italicized text/Italicised text(/i) = Italicized text/Italicised text

(u)Underlined text(/b) = Underlined Text

(color=insertcolorname)Colored text(/color) = colored text

For example:

This sentence features the colors of ROY G. BIV.

Remember, use the brackets [], not the parentheticals.

There are a wide array of colors to use, by the way. Forty, I believe.

Here in Germany we have something calloed 'child's money', parents get it granted for support on their kids (for those that don't know what it is). As I'm officialy still a student, my mom gets the 150 bucks for me as well, and puts them on my account every month.

But apart from that, I pay for everything myself. Electricity, phone, internet, rent... I had no job for quite some time now, and the state is slow in working on my proposal for support. I lived of my savings for some time now, but they are almost drained.

Well, I will get it managed somehow. As soon as the new job kicks in, the worst is behind me.

mx always said that it was an extension of the old CD Reviews forum, really...adding the online users reflects the activity of two sites that are really two halves of the same thing, if that makes sense. I was surprised by how much traffic sputnik gets though.

Mx is the most popular, everyone who is a musician and a teenager in Tulsa knows about it, then a few know about the cd reviews, but no one cares about the forums really. I don't either, kinda boring if you ask me.

I'm going to be honest: I don't think you've been here long enough to find out how much fun the forums can be. I've been here for years, and it's still ridiculously fun.

Anyway, I don't know why you would say that sucks, I'm making a list of cd's I want that would total $500 or more. That means over at least 25 to even 50 cds if my parents buy them at our used cd store in Tulsa.

Were not rich at all actually, last year my dad made less than $40,000 and an income is never guaranteed for my family. This year though November is a really good month for my dad's buiseness. I think he's going to end up making over $60,000 this year which is pretty much double from last year.

Last.fm is a program that tracks what you listen to on your computer. Every time you listen to a song it is recorded on your last.fm page and eventually you'll get lists like most played songs, most played artists, favorite genres, etc. You can also join groups.

For those interested:

As World AIDS Day (Dec 1) approaches, The drug company Bristol-Meyers Squibb built a website to help AIDS research. If you let the page load, you can chose to "light" a candle anywhere in the world. Just chose the place, and chose why you're lighting it. I decided to light mine for hope.

For every candle lit, they will donate $1 to AIDS research.

Now they are going to donate a minimum of $100,000 but- if we can get more candles than that lit, think of all the extra money that will be donated. At last count, there are 5,827 candles, a long way to go. Think how easy it is to give. Just a few clicks of the mouse, and you've helped fund a worthy cause, without ever having to leave your chair.

Give it a try.

OK, Sputnikvolk, I have a task for you all. I don't know if I can make this into a thread, but I will if people want.

Basically, I'm looking for ten songs from all of you. Not necessarily your ten favourite songs, just ten songs which give the best picture of your musical tastes. Basically, we can get an idea of other's people tastes and then go and check out that stuff for ourselves. It'll be fun. I'll put something up later, busy now.

morrissey
11-24-2005, 07:34 PM
The good half is good and the other half is not good

Here's something I did for one of those A/I threads back in the day. It's my lifelong playlist. And it's got FIFTEEN songs.

1. The Commitments - Mustang Sally
This is one of those childhood memories I have. My mom doing the cleaning while listening to music. Occasionally it would be David Wilcox or John Cougar, but nine times out of ten it was the Commitments soundtrack. Since this was the first track, it got a lot of spins. Best group to never be a group. It was my mom's music, but along with other "kid" songs I remember (Welcome to the Jungle, and the FYC's "She Drives Me Crazy) it has stayed with me to this day as one of my favourite songs, if not bands.

2. Oasis - Don't Look Back in Anger
This was my older brother's favourite band, and because of that I despised it about as much as I liked it. In front of him I would denounce them, but when he left the house I secretly absorbed their music. Wonderwall was more famous, Don't Look Back in Anger was better. Something about this time period (94-96) is probably the only reason I keep trying to find a reason to like Oasis now.

3. Spice Girls - Say You Will Be There
This is the first group that was mine. It wasn't my parents music, I wasn't something I listened to casually. Like most kids of my age (boys and girls alike, which is a pretty unique phenomenon), I feel in love with these girls. It's tough to pick just one song, but this was probably the one that stuck with me the most. These girls were the complete package - despite being average in so many ways. None of them were very good singers, none of them were great performers, but they came at the right place and time for me and started my love of music, pop music in particular.

4. Blink 182 - All The Small Things
Like so many kids my age, somehow I got into Blink 182. And then Sum 41, New Found Glory, Dashboard Confessional, Brand New and other similar bands. It's part of my music revolution, and I'm not ashamed of it at all. I spent a hell of a lot of time singing and playing along with their records. I singled out this song because it was their big single, the first thing that turned me on to the band.

5. The Beatles - Glass Onion
Everyone knows a few Beatles songs. Who hasn't heard Hey Jude or sung along to Yellow Submarine? I certainly had, but when the 1 collection came along in 2000, I bought it just like everyone. And I fell in love and spent about a year collecting all of their albums, and listening to next to nothing but the Beatles. I still liked Blink 182 and similar bands, but when I heard the Beatles a musical door opened. I singled out Glass Onion because it was the first song which amazed me lyrically. Which is quite funny, since the lyric is dead simple. But I loved it, and still do. The Beatles lead me to the solo careers, Wings, The Stones, The Kinks, The Who and eventually back the other way to Buddy Holly, Elvis Presley, tons of Motown artists, on and on.

6. Ryan Adams - When the Stars Go Blue
This is an artist that doesn't really lead me anywhere. I like Wilco and Whiskeytown, but other than that I haven't picked up on his influences or similar artists. I just like him. Really tough to single out a song, I can't say why I picked this one. It was probably the first moment that Ryan's talent hit me. I don't really know. I love this song to death though.

7. The Smiths - There is a Light That Never Goes Out
This is it. The apex. The light at the end of the tunnel, the... ah whatever. When I first heard this song, I can't even explain the feeling. I had heard about the Smiths randomly from somewhere. I honestly can't recall, and I wish I could because it would result it a better story. But I heard of them (after never having heard their name mentioned before), I went to trusty Kazaa (jaysus) and downloaded a few tracks. Well I Wonder, How Soon is Now?, This Charming Man. Those three hit my like a ton of bricks. To this day I still can't explain why the Smiths affect me so much. But they do. Then I heard There is A Light That Never Goes Out, which I will defend to my dying day as one of the best songs of all time. For me personally, it is the best bar none. I have never had a lyric which I relate to so much. I have never had a lyric which I admire so much. The Smiths are my band. Sure, they're the patron band for thousands of other listeners. There is just some connection, I can't explain it. These guys are tops.

8. Morrissey - Suedehead
Where do you go from the Smiths? To Moz of course, only to be inevitably disappointed. But Suedehead showed that the guy had something going for him. Even if most of his catalogue sucks. I'm weird and I like Southpaw Grammar and Maladjusted. Sort of. Can't say the same for Kill Uncle. But yeah, I like the guy's mediocrity far more than anyone should. But Suedehead is a world class pop song, no matter who it's coming from.

9. John Mayer - Covered in Rain

I don't really want to include this since it doesn't really lead to anywhere. I don't much like similar artists like Jason Mraz or Dave Matthews, nor am I a huge fan of SRV or similar blues stuff. But I like John Mayer. This song is just wicked, at least the live version on Any Given Thursday. This guy can play.
[b]

10. Pulp - Common People
This is a veritable anthem. Pulp are another one of those bands that don't have much going for them, yet they have everything right. Different Class is one of the best albums of all time, in my mind. Each track on it a perfect crafted pop gem telling of urban life. Common People is the clear highlight of the album, and the clear highlight of Pulp's career. This lead me to Blur, Suede and a few other bands from that era... I still think I like Pulp the most out of all the Britpop bands.

11. Joy Division - Atmosphere

"Love Will Tear Us Apart" is the seminal JD song, but I like this one more. JD is a band I would never have been into five years ago. But somehow it happened, everyone was recommending them to me. So I check out a few songs. I didn't fall in love immediately, Joy Division isn't that kind of a band. I don't think I do or ever will "love" or even like their music. It isn't fun to listen to. It isn't enjoyable. But it's perfect for certain times, and though I don't think I can relate to what Curtis was going through, I can certainly sympathise.

12. New Order - Blue Monday
Joy Division leads to New Order. Which for some odd reason leads to Depeche Mode. Which leads to countless synth pop bands who don't quite measure up.
New Order were a great band. A lot of their songs are missing something, they're pretty average. But when New Order do it right, they do it right. Blue Monday is a perfect example.

13. The Streets - Empty Cans
This was my first taste of rap that I liked. I was never really a fan of mainstream rap acts like Eminem or Ja Rule. Sure the odd song was good, but it wasn't music meant for me, and I didn't connect with it or like it. I don't relate to Mike Skinner either, but he's such a great storyteller that it doesn't matter. Despite his first album's flaws (and there were many), it gave me a new angle on rap music. It was extremely tough to single out one song - Stay Positive could have just as easily occupied this space, as could countless others (which is great considering he only has two albums). Along with Kanye West and the Gorillaz (yeah I know), this opened me up to stuff like Del the Funkee Homosapien, Public Enemy, the Beastie Boys, Eric B. & Rakim, Talib Kweli, Common etc. etc.. It only happened recently (late 2004, 2005), but I think it's going to continue and grow.

14. The Clash - London Calling
I got into the Clash late. Really, really late. Like 2005 late. But who cares, I've got all their albums and I'm here now. This is still the quintessential Clash song. The Clash lead me to the Sex Pistols, the Jam, the Buzzcocks and tied back in with other punk and post-punk bands like Television, Gang of Four, Mission of Burma, the Minutemen etc. I wish I had heard these guys earlier, but oh well.

15. Billy Bragg - Waiting for the Great Leap Forward
By and large one of the best lyricists I've ever come across. So many brilliant one-liners... not only does this guy give Bob Dylan or Morrissey a run their money, he surpasses them by miles. Too bad he never gets recognised for it. Hell, even I forget to add him to those favourite lyricists lists. Uh this song is awesome. Really, really awesome. Really. He's another artists I wish I could have been listening to for years, but you get what you get.
