Yo Liberi (or whoever else) read this and tell me if you understand my thesis statement (ie what I am going to argue)? And then just tell me if the rest makes sense, it is far from complete though.
A man of unwavering conviction and limitless faith in his ideals, Robert Owen set out to demonstrate the practicability of his utopian socialist visions in the Scottish village of New Lanark in the early nineteenth century. Convinced in the viability and necessity of cooperative living arrangements in the new industrial world, Owen took his knowledge as an industrialist and ideologue and combined it with his philanthropy to fund a self-sustaining, cooperative village. While his experiment at New Lanark was initially quite successful and generated mass public recognition for his efforts, it soon became clear that his collectivist utopia was not as sustainable as Owen had long believed. Along with the failure of similar Owenite ventures in the United States and England (particularly the disastrous New Harmony settlement in Indiana), it became stunningly apparent that Owen’s communitarian ideology was an unviable societal alternative. Looking first at the transformation of the New Lanark settlement into a cooperative town, and the subsequent establishment of new villages both by Owen himself and separately by followers of Owen’s philosophy, it seemed as though success was definite. Instead, impracticabilities within the Owenism ideology itself, failure in Owen’s character and approach, and an infeasible economic approach all led to the disastrous collapse of Owen’s New Lanark experiment and the arguably more calamitous downfall of his subsequent ventures.
Due to the unequalled growth of the industrial revolution, working and living conditions in late eighteenth century England reached an unparalleled low, deteriorating beyond control. Poverty, overcrowding, bad sanitation and dangerous working conditions plagued all cities and towns and affected all by the highest echelons of society. Decrepitude and demoralisation became a facet of British life.
Enter Robert Owen, a Welsh industrialist and keen intellectual who rose to prominence as a profiteer of the burgeoning revolution, operating a large Manchester cotton mill. Taking advantage of his improved social condition as an industrialist, Owen furthered his education and was exposed to some of the premier philosophical ideals of the time. It was not long before Owen was contributing to the academic currents himself, publishing three philosophical papers as a member of the Unitarian Manchester College’s Literary and Philosophical Society . Owen was renowned for his capable managerial skills put perhaps more so for his philanthropic ventures. Recognising the unacceptable living conditions industrialists for his ilk had helped foster, Owen dedicated his time, effort and earning to eliminate child labour and homelessness, and minimise poverty, unsanitary living environments, harsh working conditions and illiteracy to the best of his ability .
[insert crap about how he came to develop "Owenism", his takeover of New Lanark, and a brief description of the practical application of Owenism in New Lanark. So basically just giving some background information.]
Despite his admirable intentions and well thought-out philosophy, no amount of knowledge or passion could transform utopian socialism into a workable ideology. This was a prime reason for the failure of New Lanark – the philosophy behind the community itself was impracticable. In order for the community to be successful, Owen would have had to either venture down a completely dissimilar ideological path or significantly alter his current ideology – decisions which would not have resulted in a true Owenite settlement, and thus an indirect failure of his ideology.
Perhaps the largest ideological failing of Owenism and by extension New Lanark was the disregard to human inequalities. As former Indiana Governor Roger D. Branigin explains, no two humans are alike in terms of knowledge, skills, desires, benevolence, and so on . Even with the noblest of goals on Owen’s part, greed, indolence and apathy toward the greater good of the community would inevitably infiltrate the settlement and undoubtedly contributed to the downfall of New Lanark to a certain extent. If the entire community is not focused on working toward the success of the community at large, long-term success is unattainable. Such is what happened at New Lanark – and would occur at any Owenite settlement, as this inequality is an inherent human trait and thus unavoidable.
In a similar vein, malevolence or laziness need not even be present for an unworkable society – many other human traits and idiosyncrasies brought about the failure of New Lanark. Any instance in which a citizen is not contributing physically or intellectually to the community but is instead a dependent of the settlement – these people are unavoidable in any societal arrangement yet are particularly troublesome under a communitarian society. The elderly, the infirm, children and infants, the mentally and physically disabled and so on – regardless of the specific problem which makes them incapable to contribute fully to the community – it impedes the self-sustainability of a settlement if there are too many dependents and not enough contributors.
Due to the combination of various human inequalities and intrinsic human characteristics that no amount of spirit or belief in the communitarian ideal could override, the ideology behind the New Lanark settlement (and consequently all subsequent Owenite settlements) induced unavoidable failure.

I'm not sure how many reviews we have total... we are up to 6000 or so in the review number, but many of those have been deleted. 4000, maybe? I have been going through each review for the past couple of weeks trying to make sure all the info is right, I am only at about 750 right now but a good 25% of those were deleted ones. But obviously the deleted percentage will be higher for the older ones, some of which were really subpar.

Yeah Ondaatje went to my University, he's kind of a metropolitan treasure up here. So is his brother. But Sri Lakan =/= Indian. I was kidding though, Canada is indeed a very diverse society and especially in Toronto (where I live) where visible minorities make up almost half the population (42% according to wikipedia) and 10% of the population is from India/South Asia. Punjabi is one of the mosts prominent secondary languages spoken here (behind Chinese, Italian and Portugese), and only growing.

Yeah, I think I'm going Boss, even though I think most of their other pedals aren't very good.
I like your Fender bass, but that one you posted in the previous page is pretty unsexy. Like you
My bass is a Warwick too. The through-body thumb bass.
http://www.warwickbass.com/basses/thumb_bass.html
Edit: it goes for like £2,500 new but I got it for £400

how can you call a Warwick unsexy?!
That is gay. Corvettes, Fortresses and Thumbs are amazing basses.

I've just got a measly Squire. :upset:
There's nothing wrong with Squiers.

The only reason I still have a Squier is because no one will buy it off me for more than $80 :( Still it's good for messing around with Sonic Youth alt tuning songs.

Two of it's pegs are bent in keeping it out of tune. :upset:

I have a very disturbing story for you all on this fine evening.
I am officially infected by hookworms. If you don't know what they are, they are parasites that host on human intestine. They leave the body through your rectum. I just found all this out about ten minutes ago, when i got an itch, and somehow pulled a two inch worm out. Any thoughts?
If you can imagine how scary it is to pull a WORM out of your ***.

Sunday Mar 26 - Sunday Apr 2
01 The Fall of troy 79
02 AFI 54
03 Rise Against 50
04 Thrice 35

A Physician has told me that i do not have hookworms, but rather, a severe hair growth underneath the epidermis around my cocyx. I have to have the growth lanced off on Saturday. That should be fun.
So, what i pulled out of my arse last night was not a worm, but rather, a bigass hair.

Damrod, the percentage beside each playcount is the amount of my total listening amount that that week's plays equal. So the Housemartin's 106 plays equal 0.4% of all the tracks I have ever played.

Nah, i've never been a big scone fan.
One of these days, Nath is going to actually come in this thread and reply to you two. And then the great silence will begin.
The apocalypse is approaching.

That;s what I said, complete and utter nonsense.
Nath can't even read our messages, not unless he has his goggles on. Get with the times Danny boy.
In other news I have found a comedic soul mate in Stephen Colbert.
