I should be really happy too atm with my exam results back and Henin-Hardenne winning. But for some reason I'm just meh.

I'm currently in a whirlwind right now. A lot of things just flew at me at once and I'm all discombobulated mentally as a result. It's just one of those things that came out of nowhere... and while I'm glad that this is all going on right now, I'm really confused and not really able to form concrete thoughts on the matter right now.

But interestingly enough, John Coltrane was not alone in seeking to build bridges between musical islands that seemed to share nothing in common. Hey guys. Just finished my latest review this morning. For those of you with experiance, what are some of the ways to keep your motivation up? Say when you write some reviews and you don't get many replies or the replies are kind of lackluster. Do you ever become discouraged? Is taking a step back a good idea? Or perhaps forging ahead? How do you pace yourselves? Just wonderin'. Because my latest review is an for an album I would like everyone to know about. Not the review itself, but the music, 'ya know. But It hasn't gotten many looks and only one comment and I think I have just come to realize that sometimes people just aren't gonna give a crap. So I figure it's just a matter of getting on with the next one. Still, it's a little disheartening :-\

Anyway, that's just how I'm feeling about it right now and I'm wondering if any of you as reviewers ever think the same and how you keep it from making you throw in the towel. That's it.

Dave de Sylvia
01-27-2006, 04:29 PM
I noticed your review earlier, and I made a mental note to read it.

Personally though, I don't really care if people read the reviews I write. It's a bonus, of course, but I do it because I enjoy reviewing. It's funny because people say "awesome review" all the time, when all I want them to do is listen to the damn songs. But in general, I know there's a few people who'll read my reviews regardless, so that's good enough for me.

morrissey
01-27-2006, 04:32 PM
Unfortunately that's the way it is, it doesn't matter how much time you spent on your review, how much you care about the album and think everyone should hear it etc., the fact of the matter is the latest Green Day review is going to get more replies than something less mainstream, that's the way it is. Some albums just aren't popular or controversial enough to generate much discussion. Don't get discouraged, just keep reviewing albums you want to review. I know it's a dumb saying, but even if you convince one person to get into this band, you've done something.

edit: as for how I personally feel about it, it really isn't a big deal. I think you just need to accept that it is all relative, for a MCR review to reach 10+ pages the equivalent of an Ani DiFranco review getting one page. Don't get discouraged, just keep on chugging and do it for yourself, not other people.

morrissey
01-27-2006, 04:36 PM

I don't care about your glam reviews because come on, it's glam, but most anything else you review I actually take your endorsement (or lack thereof) to heart. There are a few other reviewers around here whose opinions I trust enough to know if an album is worth it or not, otherwise, if I have heard the album, the review just corroborates or counters my pre-existing opinion on a band/album and I'll comment accordingly. If I haven't heard it, and it's by a reviewer I don't "trust", I'll keep what they say in mind but unless they're a very persuading author they can't often convince me to jump up immediately and purchase an album.

edit: reading this over, maybe if I could be more easily convinced by your average person I'd actually start listening to new music. :\

JohnXDoe
01-27-2006, 04:41 PM
Yeah, I guess you guys are right. And it's like Spat Out says about just wanting people to listen to the music. I really do it for the love of the music. And I'll also be getting into some stuff I don't like so much. It's been a lot of fun lately, but I've gotten some "too long" remarks and what not. And with one review I have to plead guilty to that, but the others I've thought are fine. And worthy of more then just a quip or two. I'm getting the hang of it and having some fun, though. So I guess that's the most important part. And I want to thank you guys for all the encouragement. I'll keep on keeping on......Oh, and I've also been a bit more active commenting on the reviews of others. So that helps, too.

morrissey
01-27-2006, 04:44 PM
There are always going to be nitpickers. You could write out the perfect review that took you 10 hours to pull together and the first comment will be some guy saying "you left out a period in the last paragraph", or "it's too long", or something equally inane and unhelpful, and they don't actually comment on the content of the review itself or the album. Just ignore them (fix up that period though ;)) and move on.

Dave de Sylvia
01-27-2006, 04:59 PM

I don't get what you're saying. What does curling have to do with being a melting pot?

Anyway you don't have to argue in favour of the professor's leading statement. You could argue that in actual fact Canada is the melting pot and America is the mosaic, or that they both have elements of the two prototypes. You might have a tough time trying to prove some of the more outlandish propositions.

As for reviews, I only review albums I am very familiar with. The only album I have reviewed without knowing it front and back is Here Come the Tears, I think it turned out alright and my opinion has stayed pretty much the same. But yeah I mostly like reviewing favourite albums.

My high school never had any courses like that, but you're best going to a film school that is designed specifically for people looking to get into the field. My university has a cinema studies course but it isn't practical use, it is more about analysing films and such.

I'm not really sure why you would voluntarily give a negative review, unless somebody requested you review an album or something. I try to stay balanced. When people review nothing but albums they love, the entire site becomes full of positive reviews and no negative. That makes it virtually useless for people coming in from the outside looking to investigate. Whent hey look around and see everything rated 4+, it doesn't give them any idea of what to avoid and what to check out. But since users can rate albums that they didn't review, that may not apply to sputnik.

Thank you very much, Jom. I try to give real reasons and avoid trashing the album, but DFelon said something about how my PsyOpus review was terrible because it was subjective but not objective, or something like that. I didn't really understand, because that's how I feel about the album.

Heh I wasn't even thinking about the benefit of the site, just my own view. But I agree, for the purpose of the site it definitely helps to balance things. We want to have the widest database popular and since there are going to be crappy albums out there, there are going to be negative reviews. I just don't see myself writing one in the near future, I guess. B-/

yo morriss review some tommy lee or whatev

That makes it virtually useless for people coming in from the outside looking to investigate.
Well that's what seperates sputnik from a professional reviews site. I'd expect to see disproportionately high ratings here- I'd still only be swayed to buy something by a particularly well-articulated review.

I've written a couple, but they weren't very good, and it just doesn't feel right to review an album that doesn't appeal to me. Oh yeah, and every album that i'd give a negative rating to already possesses 6 reviews.

I don't think there's anything wrong with negative reviews, I think there should be more, but a lot of them aren't pulled off well.

Edit: well not necessarily more negative reviews, just more critical ones.

Aye, as a composer and an improviser, I really think it holds one back if they cannot find the musical merit in everything out there. Music is not the net you catch what you want in the eternal river, but it is the river.

I think if you go into a review with any kind of "I'm going to do this with the review" mindset, its going to end up badly. If you want to talk trash about an album, you'll probably end up ignoring all its good points. If you want to hype up an album, you'll probably end up ignoring the short comings. That said, I always like to think about what I'd give the album before I review it, then compare that with what I finish up giving it. I rarely stick to that rating.

And wheres my last.fm charts.

Class starts at 9 for me, but my lifting partner/best friend and I will be weightlifting at 6:30...Lovely!

Odd...My chart hasn't gone buggered out recently. I absolutely adore this Mew album, Frengers.

Can you sign on AIM for a little bit? I'd like to talk to you about something.

i done that for absolution, which, i'm happy to say, didn't get torn to pieces. but yeah, the amount of people who write hype reviews (i.e. the annoying n00bs) that just state what everyone else has heard from the NME or another music magazine can get annoying

Damrod
01-30-2006, 08:03 AM
It's important to have negative reviews as well, as many reviewers tend to state the same ("This rocks, is the best" etc)

Which reminds me that I have to kick some Nevermind reviews (it's gone up to 8 again)

I know you are, but I'll still e-kill you if you don't respond to me on msn this instant!

Agreed. Too many people submit a review thinking they're humorous or thinking they're going to prove a point or want to see the reaction they're gonna get... but then it loses its luster. It's a waste, really.

Was this debate started because of my 1.5, and 2 reviews yesterday? Anyways, I don't really care anymore if people respond to me reviews; I've decided to just write for my own self.

Jom
01-30-2006, 11:00 AM
No, so put a sock in it. This debate has been on-going even before you graced the Internet with your presence.

EDIT: There's a distinct difference between reviewing an album with a differing opinion and clogging the site with similar reviews and not bringing anything new to the table. You can get your exercises in writing elsewhere.

Haha, alright, so it's not just me. Thanks a bunch.

The reason why I'm wondering is because I always post my charts in my journal and then proceed to write about how I'm misunderstood in a world of negatives and how I'll never find happiness and how I don't know if people are holding on to what they've got and I'm so tired and I'll be holding on to this sweet love and I feel walls and then proceed to write terrible poetry.

Just kidding. But I do post my charts elsewhere :upset:
