Yeah, I still have the email; I'll send it back to you. What I'd advise you to do first is to disconnect from the internet, go to file in the internet window and hit 'work offline' then search through your history for the lost reviews. If your temporary internet files are still there, you should be able to access the reviews that are on your computer. I have to stress the importance of being offline, though. Get back to me if you can't.

KOD & Steve: Yeah, me too :upset:

Urgh, I had signed off earlier in the day, and when I came back online, and went to Sputnik was exactly when the site failed. I got to watch my brother's review go bye-bye. :(

Speaking of which, I should probably log back in as Kripes.

This is to JohnxDoe:

What albums would you consider to be classics? I'm trying to find even one album that deserves the honour of being an absolute "ceiling [or] mountain top" of music. And I can't think of a single one. I can't think of a single album that is universally, 100%, irrefutably considered a classic album in the truest most extreme sense of the word. If, like you say, this can't be done right, if this status is so unattainable as both you and I seem to think it is, then what is the purpose of even using the word classic? If no music has ever been classic, maybe we need to readjust our views. If no album can ever be 5 stars, why does the rating exist? Any more than 6 or 7 stars don't exist? It has to have some use, otherwise albums would be rated on a scale of 0-4.5 stars. If you want something untouchable, then fine, imagine that 6 stars is really the pinnacle. But I think ultimately music is subjective - what is a 0 star album for me is a 0.5 star album for someone else. What is a 4.5 star album for me is a 5 star for you. Music is 100% undeniably subjective, and reviews, even by the most learned of music critics, are entirely subjective. I guess I just don't understand the concept of 5/5 being untouchable... if no music has ever been made that is deserving of 5/5, then maybe we need to adjust the criteria? Yes, that is when we start taking things into account like the impact it had on the music scene at the time, the ways in which it was innovative, the new sounds which it used to great effect or new instruments it brought to the forefront... the way it gives a voice to the voiceless, motivates and mobilises, makes people care about more than music. Or the impact it has on future generations of music listeners... how they look back and realise THIS album alone changed the course of music forever. The way this album made countless kids put on their record and think "I want to be a musician". The album itself doesn't even have to be that good, but there are so many other factors that are invovled that can no doubt make something a 5/5 album.

I just don't see the purpose of holding 5/5 in some unattainable light. If you do that, then 4.5/5 becomes the new "classic" rating. Then people start complaining about how 4.5 should only be reserved for the utmost of albums. And then down the line people are only allowed to choose between a rating of 0, 0.5, or 1. Everything else is untouchable, since no music has ever been made that deserves a 3. I just don't see what good it does. Why can't people see that Album A is a good example of a 5/5? Ah yes, this is what a classic album sounds like. I'm not saying every album is a 5/5, or even all of the commonly regarded "classic albums" deserve the rating. But it can't be unattainable.

Tell me, what albums would you consider 5/5? If there are none, what is the point?

p.s. it's 5:15am and I'm probably making even less sense than usual. Forgive me.

edit: ok looking over your sputnik profile you gave X's Wild Gift 5 stars. I'm not going to attack your rating just to prove a point, especially since I haven't heard the album, but I can guarantee you that album is not universally regarded as a classic album but instead your rating is coming from a personal vantage point. You are a big fan of X and understand and appreciate their music much much more than your average music fan (I mean your name is John Doe for God's sake), and as such can formulate a knowledgeable opinion of the album. It doesn't make your opinion that it is a 5 star album wrong nor does it make the people who unfailingly neglect to mention it as a classic album, even after having heard it. But you obviously believe some albums are worth 5 stars. So why can't I, from the vantage point of a knowledgeable listener of artist Y, having heard and analysed their discography, why can't I decide that album is worth 5 stars, regardless of whether other people consider it to be a perfect album or not? It is my opinion, and if I can back it up with solid arguments, then there is no reason why any album in the world can't be 5/5 in my opinion. Even those greatest albums of all time lists, regardless of who publishes them, regardless of how reputable or learned the source is, they are just someone's opinion. Same as on sputnik. If there is solid defense for the rating and if the listener has obviously done their homework and isn't just taking out of their *** than I see no reason why "classic" ratings shouldn't exist.

edit2: I should emphasise that I don't mean that classic ratings should be handed out like candy either. But if someone presented me with a review of any album, be it Ok Computer or Ashlee Simpson's latest album, if they argued their point well and could convince me that it worth being rated classic than I have no choice but to respect their opinion... I may feel inclined to support their rating or to completely disagree and give it a converse rating... in that respect, if I could effectively argue that an album is deserved of no more than 0 stars, then once again I think if I have solid backing than my rating should be respected, even if the other listener's opinion opposes mine.

I still think the classic word is entirely misleading; first of all because the new Strokes album can't be proclaimed a classic no matter what the NME thinks, but also because I think it's a word which exists outside of any real qualitative analysis. Like I said in the other thread: Sgt. Pepper, Thriller, Back In Black, The Chronic, Kind Of Blue... they're all classics, but I wouldn't rate a single one of them 5/5 (in the case of one of them they'd have to invite a scale with negative numbers), but they're classics because they transcend musical opinion; they've become a part of their respective musical cultures and can't really be viewed in isolation.

I think JohnXDoe has a somewhat similar view, which is colouring his view of what a 5/5 should represent. I think a 5 is what an album that I can't put down should get, and an album I'd never change a note on whether other people would like it or not. Jeff Buckley's Grace or The Manics' The Holy Bible spring to mind. If I give something a 5 rating you can probably take it as a 4 or a 0 or whatever.

Well Moz, I'm not of the opinion that a 5 star rating is unattainable. Or a classic rating. I just know that I see too much of it on sputnik when compared with other highly regarded sources of information. I also realize that sputnik is not a professionally run operation, so to speak. It's not Rolling Stone or Spin or even Blender in that regard. So keeping ratings in line and consistent can be difficult. Especially when dealing with a bunch of amatuer writers/critics.

But the term classic is not purely subjective. It is an inarguable and undisputable statement. 5 star rating? Fine. Keep it. Nothing wrong with it. Just don't label it as a rating given a "classic" album. Because sputnik needs to have some standards, IMO. And before sputnik was here Rolling Stone was. And Spin. And the New York and L.A. Times. And many respected writers and critics and publications and sources of information and artists that set the standard for what a classic album is and what it should be. And when people come to sputnik they should see that standard followed and upheld. And if it can't be, then it shouldn't be an option. It just looks bad and unreliable. Like the example I gave in the other thread about the Blasters and the Stray Cats. Some things are just obvious. And if it seems like the reviewers at sputnik are clueless to the obvious, what purpose are we serving? Like I said before, keep the top rating. Just remove the term classic if reviewers can't distinguish the difference between a classic album and a lesser one. Because most people who patronize sputnik most likely know the difference. And it's our responsibilty as informed reviewers not to mislead them, and in our best interest not to look less informed or credible then other places that provide the same information.

So far as my Wild Gift review, that comes with the benefit of 25 years of hindsight and the fact that it is considered by many to be one of the best Rock n Roll albums of the last quarter century. It is #334 on Rolling Stone magazines top 500 albums of all time, and it was my first review, as I saw the thread that encouraged users to write reviews on RS's top 500 albums. And even if it wasn't my first review it would still get a classic rating from me. Because it is a bonafide classic. And I can link you to countless more reviewers far greater then I who have said the same and can back up my rating. Like I said, some things are obvious. Is it my favorite X album? Nope. It's my third favorite. Will I be reviewing the other two I hold above it? Yup. Will they be getting classic ratings? Nope. Because Wild Gift came first and without it the other two could not exist. It set them up and served a bigger purpose. As did Los Angeles, another classic X album. You don't have to like the albums, but being objective rather then subjective it's no less true.

EDIT: I got the favorite bands thing worked out, Spat. Thanks. Your second suggestion worked.

I deem albums classic, that really influenced music in general or a broad way. Or in other words, that had a huge impact. Even if they are not musically the best that is out there.

Example:
Nevermind by Nirvana. Nothing too up there, but it had an undeniable impact on the music scene.

So, I think not many albums can be considered classic IMO, especially ones that came out this year/last year.

I'm almost done with my Disturbed review, but I need to show you all something (those who know your guitar).

The second single, Stricken, features Dan Donegan at perhaps his best. He opens up the song with two fingered dyads that slide using a four-over-three polyrhythmic style; separating each slid dyad is an open E. Dan uses this same style with the verse as well using mostly single notes, but including dyads as well, mainly at the tail end of the verses. The chorus is the simplest of the song with some simple, and straightforward riffing. When the song reaches the interlude, Dan plays the same thing he did with the intro, but only uses single notes rather than dyads. The best part of Dan’s performance on the song is easily the solo, which is played in the D Dorian mode, with a B Natural working as an accidental. He uses the 4:3 polyrythm again in the solo at 2:23 at some double-stop bends, and again 2:36 at the 32nd note pull-off phrase. ( from Guitar One)

Does this all sound right?

On a side note:

Kripes is to Coheed & Cambria as Scruples is to Halo: Combat Evolved :-D

Kripes: if you're going to put in all that hoo-hah about what Donegan is doing in one solo, you have to quote your source.

I agree with SOP - only a handful of people will care about what Donegan's soloing style for that song is, and even then, I agree with (Galapagos, was it? I can't recall) who said that nobody wants to read about that anyway in a review. If people want to read that, they'll pick up a guitar mag.

"We're going to have as much as four people working underneath you."

"This is a big promotion, Jens."

"You're going to demote the head of the IT department and give me more money?"

Good luck, man.

If i may bring back the Chuck Norris jokes, I did an English Talk Show project and i was the host. Guess who the host was? Chuck Norris, thankyaverymuch. I printed up a list of Chuck Norris jokes, thanks to Jom, and gave the members in my group the list. During the presentation, each person said a random Chuck Norris joke.

Mine was- A blind man once stepped into Chuck Norris' shoes. Chuck Norris replied 'What are you doing? Do you know I am Chuck Norris?' When the blind man heard his name, his vision was instantly cured. Too bad the first and last thing he ever saw, was a painful roundhouse kick to the face from Chuck Norris.

Hey guess, would it be ok if I reviewed an Ep, that is only one song, a very long song at that? It would just to try to get people to listen to a different side of a band? Quick review, at least for me, and I will finish my Zappa review sometime this weekend, because I have a little time right now, and I could do this.

Dave de Sylvia
01-20-2006, 02:29 PM
Yeah, EPs are fine. Be careful to review the song, instead of just breaking the track down into sections.

Edit: I replied to your Zappa review, giving some advice on making it more concise.

What are you talking about, Meshuggah's I? As long as it's an EP and not a single, you're fine. Just be weary not to break the song down by minutes, because it's more of a "this happens at dundundun, and then two minutes later it goes dundunDUNdun."

Fair warning: none of your reviews are going to go through until you finish your Zappa one, since you submitted that first.

Ouch, so I can't do a quick little review of Porcupine Tree's Moonloop EP, and have it posted, as I don't have time to do an entire 10 songs?

Dave de Sylvia
01-20-2006, 03:03 PM
That's basically it. You can ask for your Zappa review to be deleted and then send your EP review in, if you want, but usually half-finished reviews are deleted right away.

There is absolutely no reason for someone to submit half an album and go, "Oh, I'll finish this when I get around to it." Don't half-*** it: either do it all or don't do it at all. There is no middle ground.

For the umpteenth time:

Get a new computer or get a flash/thumb drive or external hard drive.

My oldest computer was a 300mHz processor with only 56MB (yeah, not 64, or 96, or any other 'nice' number) of RAM. Talk about travesty.

So, we got a new computer a couple years ago. Thank the Lord.

And I've had my own laptop for when I'm at uni - I don't really use it at home all that much.
