I've got a question for the sputnik crew:
Is it OK if I post a review for Bleeding Through's new album, The Truth? I know it doesn't come out until Tuesday but I've already got one done for it.

Shadows
01-08-2006, 06:24 PM
You can if you want it deleted. I've submitted albums without reviews before the release only to have them deleted, so I doubt mods will make an exception.

Why do we have such rules?

pulseczar
01-08-2006, 06:28 PM
Because if you have an album before it's released, it's most likely illegal (leaked onto the internet). I doubt Sputnik would want people asking why their reviewers have albums before they're released, the industry's really bitchy these days.

Shadows
01-08-2006, 06:37 PM
Of course it's illegal, but that's not going to stop anyone. People are going to keep downloading and it's stil lgoing to be illegal, whether it's before or after the release date. If downloading albums was a serious issue around here I would never be allowed to come here again.

Jom
01-08-2006, 06:38 PM
We can stop people from reviewing leaked albums, though, you see.

Shadows
01-08-2006, 07:11 PM
I know that, but I've always wondered why. I've never come across a leaked album that has differed from the official release.

Jom
01-08-2006, 07:17 PM
The differences between leaked and official aren't related at all to legality, however.

yeah I was hijacked through some hole in sputnik, I think.

edit: as for Itunes, just go file-add file to library and browse to the folder where you stored the songs. If you don't know where they are stored (if your email program does it automatically they might be tricky to find if they aren't on the desktop, ,in my documents or my music) then just search your computer for the file name and once you know the location add it to itunes (as shown above).

Down in the hollow, playin' a new game
Laughing and a-runnin' - hey, hey! Skipping and a-jumping
In the misty morning fog with our hearts a-thumpin' and you
My brown eyed girl
You, my brown eyed girl

Whatever happened to Tuesday and so slow?
Going down the old mine with a transistor radio
Standing in the sunlight laughing, hiding behind a rainbow's wall
Slipping and sliding, baby, all along the water fall, with you
My brown eyed girl
You, my brown eyed girl

Do you remember when we used to sing?
Sha la la la la la la la la la la la la

Honestly, I think people need to put a lot more thought and study into a review than just crapping out a track by track. It's not much of an effort to read some real reviews from Rolling Stone or All Music Guide, so I don't see why people don't do so. You can learn a lot through reading enough reviews; grammar, paragraph structure, vocabulary, etc.

I'm also tired of going back and editing all of my posts, because for some reason, it lumps all of my paragraphs together when I space them out.

Annoying.

01-12-2006, 08:13 PM
Whatever. The point is you guys have no idea how many reviews we've (between just mx, Damrod, and especially myself) been rejecting lately. Letting some reviewers that have promise through shouldn't mean that we have to get criticized for it. Otherwise, the community won't be able to grow. Conversely, if we let reviews like the above one through, that lowers the quality of the site.

Believe me, I understand your complaints, but we're working on doing what's best for the site, not to appease the "veterans."

Dave de Sylvia

Yeah that guy's ready for the 1337 music magazines, NME, Blender...

I agree with you Jom, though it's not happening a lot, I've seen people starting with t by t's and moving on to overall's. I'm not sure if it was by their own will, but everyone in the top 30 writes overall's, I think.

I just think there are some reviews (I won't mention names) that probably shouldn't have been accepted. Judging by the proceeding reviews by that user, I was probably right. No offense to you guys, accept what you guys think is right, I'm just saying what I'm saying.

Jom
01-12-2006, 08:25 PM
That was actually submitted as a review?

Yes.

If the reviews are so bad and the user never improves, then there's always the opportunity to delete the review and no harm is done. A lot of the regulars here started from pretty bad places.

Unless I misunderstood what you wrote, this could lead to a number of problems.

First, as soon as we accept one review, that user no longer has to go through the mod queue. If this hypothetical reviewer continually churns out awful reviews, there's nothing we can do but try to keep deleting them. We're able to curb users like this.

Second, this eliminates people who jump the gun and try to flame the poor soul. Before it goes through the queue, we're able to let the reviewer see our feedback before we put it onto the Sputnikmusic site. Believe me, some users can't wait to flame new users, so we want to curb that as well.

Forgive me if I misunderstood your post.

I don't keep track of how many reviews I accept and reject, I just know that I was possibly too strict. I'm pretty sure I've rejected at least thirty reviews and accepted no more than ten. It's not like we have a thread anywhere where we talk about the reviews we put through and rejected; instead, we trust each others' judgments. As staff, we work as a team, and we prepare for whatever comes next.

One way I help new reviewers is that I edit their reviews for spelling and grammar; also, I fix coding and spacing issues for them, along with adding album art, tracklists, and release dates. I do the little things, and usually let the others accept or reject the reviews, because again, i thought I was too strict.

And again, as someone alluded to earlier, everyone started from very modest beginnings. It's easy for you to look down upon these new users, but you were that person at a time.

While that would be problem, there's no problem in deleting old bad reviews of inactive reviewers, is there? I think that could improve the site a bit. Specifically looking at pretty much every review in the Doors section.

No, I mean if someone reviews a bad review but shows potential and you accept them, but then they leave the site or stop writing or whatever, you can always delete the review later on. E.g. bad reviews don't have to stay on the site.

Unless Med and Damrod were granted telepathy powers by mx and I was left out of the loop, there's no telling which users will come back and which ones won't.

No, [this is what I meant].

Oh, I gotcha. Well, same thing applies to what I said to Galapagos: there's no telling when someone will leave/return/etc.

I don't think it's justified to remove reviews from the old CD Archives forum, which is what I thought you guys were talking about.

Med comes back tomorrow, so I'll see what he has to say, and I'm sure Damrod will answer sometime when he wakes up. If mx sees this, he can answer as well. It's his site, after all.

Med went to Antarctica to go play with the penguins (and possibly get a free tuxedo, ho, ho!).

I don't really notice the stickies, because it's not like we have very many threads here to begin with.

Ooh-ooh. I'm uploading some Tangerine Dream for a mate, so I figure if any of you want some then post your email addy.

These aren't the best ever songs by Tangerine Dream, but I was just trying to cover a wide range of their career, in terms of time and sound.

List of stuff in the email:
Tangerine Dream - Two Bunch Palms
Tangerine Dream - Snow on Dragon's Peak
Tangerine Dream - Sequent C'
Tangerine Dream - 21st Century Common Man (Part I)
An abstract picture of me
A wise chinese proverb
A copy of my half-finished half-arse Final Fantasy IX OST review (maybe)
The Chills - Pink Frost
AND MORE!

Call within the next 10 minutes and you'll get all this for only two small payments of $21.95!

But seriously, I'm in a weird giving mood, so post your email address and I'll send you all that stuff plus a bit more.

That Bela fleck concert was the best thing in music history ever. Every musician there was phenomanal. The first song they played blew me away. Each band memeber had amazing solos. Victor Wooton really had the groove and his bass solos were amazing. I don't think I ever heard someone play a banjo as good or as fast Bela eithier. And The Futurist was pretty damn cool when he did a one handed drum solo. I heart Bela.

wouldn't it be easier if Kripes logged out of the forums and use the URL www.musicianforums.com/sputnik

Thank you Cathedral, it worked. I was meaning that it would let me be Shaun of the Dead on the forums, but when I logged out of Sputnik, and logged in it still had it as Kripes' account.

Time for my brother to go post, and finish his review.

I'm 5"8, he's 5"7. :-/

When my brother tries to post a comment on sputnik he'll click the post butten, but it never leaves a comment. He is definitely signed in though.

Huh, I was using a different window. I should still be Kripes.

Hey Kripes if you want to make this easier, each use a different browser for your mx/sputnik posting. Say he uses IE, and you use Firefox. That way you don't have to worry about logging in and out and submitting reviews on the wrong account by accident etc.

This is Kripes (lost ability to post here :-/ )

Okay, what is IE, and Firefox?

morrissey
01-15-2006, 02:37 PM
IE= Internet Explorer
Firefox = http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/
Opera = http://www.opera.com/products/desktop/?platform=windows

If you already have Netscape (or some other browser) use that instead. If you have a small amount of disk space and memory, I'd recommend Opera instead of FF.

Firefox is a browser, just like IE.

My aunt is so cool, she says she can get my band recording time in a recording studio. She gave me a small recorder if I need to get down lyrics and she gave me CD's, Jeff Buckley's Grace, Patti Smith's Horses and Patti Smith's Easter. I'm digging all of them.

Good thing I have every review since my 8th saved, but this really sucks, I have to submit 4 reviews again, and it'll really suck if no one comments on them because they did before. I feel bad for anyone who doesn't save their reviews.

That's great, it starts with an earthquake, birds and snakes, an aeroplane - Lenny Bruce is not afraid. Eye of a hurricane, listen to yourself churn - world serves its own needs, don't misserve your own needs. Feed it up a knock, speed, grunt no, strength no. Ladder structure clatter with fear of height, down height. Wire in a fire, represent the seven games in a government for hire and a combat site. Left her, wasn't coming in a hurry with the furies breathing down your neck. Team by team reporters baffled, trump, tethered crop. Look at that low plane! Fine then. Uh oh, overflow, population, common group, but it'll do. Save yourself, serve yourself. World serves its own needs, listen to your heart bleed. Tell me with the rapture and the reverent in the right - right. You vitriolic, patriotic, slam, fight, bright light, feeling pretty psyched.

It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it
It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine

And so on and so forth.

Come on, guys, this isn't the end of the world. If you didn't have back-ups of your reviews, that's your fault.

Heh I've lost over 200 ratings, and the entire discographies of several bands I've added (including some biographies) and one news item, but it's all small peanuts and I'm glad I didn't lose a review without a backup or anything. It'll take time to do again, but fortunately none of it requires any creativity (well, bios do but it's all manageable). I'll just cut my losses, like I said it's small peanuts.

Yeah, I still have the email; I'll send it back to you. What I'd advise you to do first is to disconnect from the internet, go to file in the internet window and hit 'work offline' then search through your history for the lost reviews. If your temporary internet files are still there, you should be able to access the reviews that are on your computer. I have to stress the importance of being offline, though. Get back to me if you can't.
