well how is the transition from bass to other stringed instruments? i've been thinking about dabbling in a little ukelele or banjo, but i want to know how hard it would be. is the tuning the same or similar? just looking for some transition advice i guess... :thumb:

GCEA i think.

The only problem with ukes is you need to spend a fair bit of money to get one that doesnt go out of tune every two seconds.
But it is fun to mess around with though. I used to be able to play a C chord :)

Banjo isn't too difficult, can't remember the tuning but i've had a go on my friends a couple of times, and as long as you have some knowledge of music you're ok because you can just figure out where each note is on the fretboard :thumb:

To me, one of the funnest things ever, is getting a ukulele and tuning it in 5ths, and playing it like a bass and or guitar. I don't know why. It's just so small and it's awesome.

i own a Ukelele, it's tuned GCEA but i've seen other tunings for them. They are really fun instruments and most chords are pretty fast to pick up

Stick with 4 stings and go mandolin

I used to have a banjo. The standard tuning is gDGBD, although you can tune them a number of ways. It's similar to open G tuning on a guitar.

The tuning is low to high, but the lowercase g is the exception. It's the smallest string, and the one that doesn't extend the whole neck. It's mainly used for a drone.

Banjos are great because you can play all of the major chords with a barre on one fret.

yeah, i've really been wanting to mess around with a ukelele especially, but i don't know about difficulty..... i just really like the sound.... as for banjo.... i mean come on! it's a banjo! its so cool! hmm.... maybe i'll start looking around for used ones..... what brands make good banjos and ukeleles?

The chicks really go for a ukelele player.

Tiny Tim was quite the c*ckhound!

It was his voice that always got me hot.

Anyway, your second instrument is usually easier to learn than your first, even if they have nothing in common (bass is my fourth instrument, but that's a long story). Also, being able to play banjo especially will really help your bass playing. The way a banjo fits into an ensemble lies right between chords on guitar and single notes on bass, so it will help you with your understanding of tonality. Between that and uke, I'd go for the banjo.

I picked myself up a ukulele today, you can find tunings here:
http://www.ukuleleworld.com/uw_tune.html

Standard in C seems to be GCEA.

for me the transition from bass to guitar was very difficult at first, but then it got very easy very fast for some reason.

Lol, I never actually did and I haven't played it in some time so I would probably be rusty at it. Not that I could record it now anyways.

It's like my computer doesn't have a sound card and the microphone input is broken.

Well, the machine head is at the 4th, the nut is at the 5th. But that doesn't really matter.

The 5th string is the smallest and is very high pitched, which is why it needs to be so short. It's rarely fretted anyway, like I said, it is a drone string.

Like a 5 string without the high g, so DGBD (low to high).

well, i looked at my local shop for ukes.... they have two baritone's and one standard (soprano) ukulele..... the standard was an absolute mess..... not really, just really hard to play, too small..... but the baritone ones..... pretty nice..... other than the different tuning (DGBE i think) do they have a similar sound? i really like the high sounding, but i couldn't really tell...... anyone know? also, the uke they had and in the book it said that it's supposed to be tuned ADF#B? huh?

*bump*

oh, and how does a free vintage 4 string banjo compare to a new (probably rented) 5 string? does the 5th string make that much of a difference? and i think i'm looking into baritone ukes..... i think i like them better......
