View Full Version : At that stage
Hey everyone
im at this stage, were im bored with what i know on the drums, Ive been doing it about 9 months-ish. Ive recently started getting lessons, 1 half hour a week i learn alot in that time, but its not enough. Im bored with everything i know pretty much, I guess i could say im like begginer-intermediate stage. I learnt most stuff from guys at school, but thats not working anymore, after watching anyone do something once i can pick it up, theres nothing new circulating around the school, so nothing for me to learn :(
I need something to get my head round so can anyone post links to intermediate style beats, fills, solo's anything thats not overly hard that i can get thinking on so i can start moving onto new aspects of drumming, rather then just get stuck with the same old beats etc etc.
Also has anyone else had this feeling? were your just totally bored of what you know and need to try new things out?

Never had that feeling. Hell, 9 months in, I was still in that "can't get enough percussion" stage.

Go get some CD's to play along with, there is a lot you can pick up that way.
I recomend Sting, ten summoners tales. (If you like odd time signatures 5/8 , 7/8 etc)
Or try to master all the rudiments, that in itself would open up worlds of posabilities.

Hmm i had that feeling were i just couldnt get enough, and i still get that feeling, but when i sit down to play, the same stuff comes out. different variations because i make it up on the spot, but always the same which is starting to bug me. that beat from nirvana smells like teen spirit comes out an awful lot in my playing, and most people in our school come to that. Its just bugging me i need to move away from it...

Taking lessons lad? If you are then try integrating the rudiments that you learned into the grooves and beats you play on the set. Don't forget that there are limitless possibilities in the world of percussion.

i find improvising when i play has helped me stay away from that place. I never get stuck bnecause every once in a hwile i teach myself something new. I just play around with beats and fills. Try playing some funk stuff, that really helped me.

Try learning some different styles of drumming. I went through kind of the same thing once, but I got a new teacher who started teaching me jazz and it opened up a whole new world for me.

change your setup around. if you play a 5, switch to 3, and then back to 4. its amazing how less toms makes your snare work classier.

I've the feeling that I wanted to quit like 3 times, for about 30 minutes then I pick up my sticks and just play on the practice pad. If you enjoy drumming keep doing it, if you don't then just either sell your drumset or keep just to play a couple days a week. Go find a band, its always fun to jam

Im in a band but we dont get the greatest amount of time to practice, we all fit really well together and think in exactly the same ways, and probably could go far but just dont have the time to do it :(

You do know that if you get bored with drumming, than it's not for you. Sheesh how in the name of F.U.C.K. do you get bored of something as dynamic as drumming?

Start to listen to different types of music. That will get you into different types of drumming and open up your pallet more.

I suggest getting a practice pad and metronome(Mouse pads can replace practice pads, just get something under it so it doesn't move but you absolutely need a metronome).

Wot exactly is a metronome? wot does it do and where can u get one from? really could i just use mouse pads instead? that sounds like a strange idea
i used to get stuck on thinks such as simple beats.. but i really got back into drumming once i really started to expose myself to some really amazing drummers..
steve gadd, nat townsley, vinnie coluita (spelling), benny greb, akira jimbo, the list could go forever.. ok maybe not.. but u get the picture.
if you want to experience some really good stuff.. go get ureself a drumming concert dvd or somehting.. ermm.. somehting from hudson music.

It's an instrument used for keeping time. The older ones have a medal weight that swings back and foward (tick, tick, tick).

I have been playing a total of about 4 years and I haven't reached that stage. I'm more at the "drums > food, clothes, and auto insurance" stage. It's a very expensive place to be.

lol ima start using a mouse pad..im a total bum lol my metronome SUCKS i cant hear it..but good thing i have some cables to connect my 'nome to my stereo so its loud enough woohoo...where could i get stick control?!?! i cant find it
i agree rudiments are not the thing to play when you are in a rut they are boring..do them when you are really excited about drumming so you can deal with the monotony of the 40 rudiments, although i do agree it can open a whole new area of playing what with the added hands control
