View Full Version : ITT: We personally recommend bands to each other.
AndreTheHyena
10-20-2005, 06:12 PM
Here's a novel idea. We all know each other pretty well, or well enough to know, for instance, that Shannon is an alcoholic, Nick is a nerd, I wish I was a cowboy, Eric is a big fat stupid, Griffin has the best tatse in music (besides me), Jessica likes stupid Canadian ska bands, etc.
So we will personally suggest bands/albums/songs to each other and we'll all be happy and in love.
Nick: The Dirty South by the Drive-By Truckers. Trust me. It's the greatest album of all time.
IHateHate (Juan?): As Good As Dead by Local H. Trust me. Grunge that doesn't suck, great lyrics.
Griff: Anodyne or No Depression by Uncle Tupelo. Trust Me. Revolutionary, had the genius idea to combine their love of Johnny Cash, Neil Young, and Southern rock with the boredom and energy of Midwestern punk rock, a la Husker Du, in the late 80's/early 90's, single-handedly ushered in "alt. country".
And so on.

Well, if you hadn't heard of the Arrogant Sons of Bitches, then Bomb the Music Industry. That's the singers solo side project and some of the songs are simply amazing.

Rocket From the Tombs. their stuff is kinda hard to find considering they never released an album during the time they were together, but a compilation of demos, live tracks, and others was released, which i have. they are very good. the band split respectively into the Dead Boys and Pere Ubu, two important bands to the punk scene. Pere Ubu are less known mainly because they are so weird.

Plan-It-X is really your one-stop folk-punk shop. The ethics behind it are so cool, too. I love PIX. I also recommend that you check out the Violent Femmes if you haven't already, they sort of sound like folk-punk before there was such a thing.
I think Andy is really the only person here who really knows my taste. I need a good punk album very badly. I don't really listen to that much punk rock these days at all, except for the obvious guys, (Rancid, Bad Brains, Minor Threat, The Clash, Conflict, Sex Pistols, Aus-Rotten, etc.), and I'd like to go back. Nick, check out Ween's 12 Golden Country Hits album. It'd be a lame parody if it weren't so damned good, musically and lyrically.
Griff, if you dig that Old 97's album you have, check out their album Wreck Your Life.
Eric, what'd you think of Head Wound City? They're kinda meh in my opinion, but I think I just need to give it a good listen. You may like Tusk, they're a pretty brutal grind band featuring dudes from Pelican, and they have a concept album, Tree of No Return, about a cursed tree and getting raped by bears and stuff. I'm sorry if there's an official recommendation thread in the punk forum, I searched and didn't find one. I'm sorry if this is a taboo subject here that recieves nothing but flames, I'm not a punk regular, I wouldn't know.
That said, what is the best/most standout psychobilly album in your opinion. I feel like getting one or 2 for christmas. So far, all I have in the genre is the first 2 Tiger Army CDs (and I have a feeling these aren't exactly considered deep into the genre).
Thanks for any help.

Phenomanauts.
Either of their albums (Rockets & Robots or Re-Entry) are amazing pieces of work.

That said, what is the best/most standout psychobilly album in your opinion. Blah blah blah.
Thanks for any help.
If you want mad cred, and good primer into psychobilly, try the Meteors, they're probably the first proper psycho band. As far as albums go, try for Wreckin' Crew.
Other good bands to introduce you are Demented Are Go, Three Bad Jacks, the Quakes, Nekromantix, etc.
And for some genre clarification: The Cramps are a good proto-psycho band, but don't be expecting the revved-up sound you may be accustomed to. The Reverend Horton Heat isn't true psycho either, but rather just punkabilly, and the Phenomenauts are basically just rockabilly, maybe punkabilly.

Ok. This is my first post so no one shoot me.
I reccomend- The D4.
They're a New Zealand band that's been around for a while but just undergone a major revamp.
I saw them last night when they were support at the Foo Fighters concert.
But then again they're not really punk.

you're supposed to recommend bands to people who ask for recommendations really. That's why it says "personally".
