Thanks!

Okay, looking for some jazzy punk, ala Television and The Voidoids. Any ideas?
A Japanese band callled Merry.

Special Brew
02-23-2006, 05:53 AM
The Slackers isn't really what I had in mind. Thanks though.

Maybe it's not only jazz I'm looking for, but punkish swing music. If you've heard that band, Merry, you would know what I'm talking about. They're really jazzy and swingish at times.

DRI
Mob 47
Millions of Dead Cops

You guys got any suggestions for ska bands that are real jazzy? I want something with a good swing, not the overly punkish stuff.

Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and New York Ska-Jazz Ensemble.

The English Beat

Tragedy
Indian Summer
Joshua Fit For Battle
Neil Perry
Stay Gold
Modern Life Is War

Tragedy - Ok
Indian Summer - Good
Joshua Fit For Battle - Decent
Neil Perry - Get's boring
Stay Gold - Good
Modern Life Is War - Decent
Orchid - Good
As The Sun Sets - Don't know

You should listen to all of those bands.

EDIT: also, just listing a bunch of random bands with no genre explainations or reasons why isn't recommending bands, it's name dropping.

I'm looking for something similar to Gogol Bordello and World Inferno Friendship Society that i could dig. I hear both bands get labled 'gypsy punk', but i have no idea about any other bands in the genre, and figured this was as good a place as any to ask. Any ideas?

Guignol is the only other band I know similar to them, they are all instrumental though.

You could try Polkacide. They are "polka-punk"

The Pietasters

The Pietasters aren't two tone. They're just traditional ska. They are a great band though, and I would recommend them to any ska fans who haven't heard them.

I wouldn't say they're trad. They're like a combination of The Planet Smashers and Slackers.

But nonetheless. They kick so much a'ss.

Guys, am I weird cause I don't find super shoprt grindcore thrash appealing?

It's an acquired taste, but I think there is no real bad grind because it's too short to be that bad.

I like Pig Destroyer and DS-13 but then like, a ten second song carried entirely by that hi hat-snare-bass thing and a guy screaming just doesn't sound that great to me. How do these bands play shows?

All good bands, I'll check out the ones that aren't bolded. I've been meaning to check Voetsek out for a long time.

Edit: Kevin, Nick's right. It is an acquired taste. I hated the stuff at first. If you want to get into grind, try listening to Toxic Narcotic or Municipal Waste, they're a bit more polished, and may be able to get you started.

ALT. COUNTRY TIME, BOYZ.

Everyone needs to download "Windfall" by Son Volt (as I already said, but nobody listens to me) and "Airline to Heaven" by Billy Bragg and Wilco. Both songs are absolutely amazing.

And if anyone hasn't checked out the rest of Billy Bragg and Wilco's stuff, Mermaid Avenue, Volumes 1 & 2, get up on that like there was no tomorrow. They cover Woody Guthrie songs and it's easily some of the best music I've ever heard.

Nick, I suggest the Handsome Family to you. It's a husband-wife duo who make some of the most traditionally composed folk and country I've heard, though all of their records came out in the past ten years. Really haunting lyrics about death and all that.

What Subhumans album should I get after The Day the Country Died.

Should I assume that you have already gotten EPLP? If you haven't, then get that. After that get Rats/Time Flies... as well as every other album they made (they are that good!). If you are looking for something more solid then go for Cradle to the Grave or Worlds Apart.

Bob Wills, dude. I just got into him and he rules. In terms of bluegrass, Split Lip Rayfield is a good current band, as is Big Smith, if you haven't heard either of them.

edit: ****, man, check out Jimmy Martin. He's the King of Bluegrass. Elizabeth Cotten is an amazing female blues/folk artist (her song "Freight Train" will change your life). And if you like instrumental folk stuff, check out John Fahey.

Everyone who likes the Defiance, Ohio, Hi Ho, Six Shooter!, On The Strings Of style of punky-folk music (with a chilled-out edge too) should check out the album A Hook For Every Fish in the Sea by the Bookends.
