I think thicker strings are better for downtuning (ie, higher string gauge). I don't know about which brand though.

I use d-addarios. They are dirt cheap, and they sound good. But yea use thicker gauged ones too. 20 bucks for a 2 pack on musicians friend they sound great on my mim fender jazz drop tuned or just standard.

Ernie Ball heavy gauge strings. Which gauge depends on your preference, and how far you wanna go.
Like, if you are talking drop D, I would say just use normal strings, or go up a tab-
But if you are talking Drop A, get a set made for a five string, toss the G string, file out you nut to take the strings, and you will be fine.
But if you are only going to, say, Drop C, get like .110 or .115 gauge.
Hope that made sense.

DR Fat beams are good for detuning.

are d-addarios good for just standard tuning too? or a good low end tone good for picking like "The Clash"?
