Hey guys,
If you have no money for straplocks unscrew your strap button make a hole in a bottle cap, put the screw through the hole, put your strap on the strap button and then re attatch to your bass. It holds your strap on great if you are skint.
Cheers,
Ross

Ps. I use two newcastle brown caps on my starter bass.

lol sounds like it would work but it would look bad. I could have just made them in my metal shop class but i never had the idea before.

Hes from England thats why. Just kidding My friend really needed strap locks lol. His band did some small show in the cafeteria at lunch in the school once. He tryed to do the thing where he tosses his bass over his sholder and catches it and starts playing again. But the strap came off and his bass went sliding across the floor. That was the worst sound i have ever heard come from a bass.

Hey what about using quarters instead of bottle caps then it would only cost 50 cents.

pitchfork
10-22-2005, 11:43 AM
Because theyre much harder to make a hole in, i think.
I've never seen a quarter so correct me if im wrong.

You can get cheap plastic ones from music shops 50p for 2 or splash out and get a £10 metal one...

Why dont you buy some?
Cause you on the welfare, you cant aford it, you'll never get some, you cant afford it... :thumb:

My friend uses washers. No drilling, and it works fine.

I bought straplocks.

My Warwick came with straplocks.

A friend of mine just let his friend borrow his Peavey bass for two weeks, and when he got it back he saw that the guy had taken a torn up piece of cloth, jammed it into the holes for the strap buttons, and screwed the strap-buttons in over the cloth...the action was incredibly high, as well (truss-rod damage, anyone?).

i have 2 quaters on my bass, so its possible. i just used a center punch and tapped it the progressed from a smal bit to a larger one. i added a counterbore as well, so the screw didnt stick out too far. its pretty un noticable from a distance, and up close it looks fine. ill do a right it all up if anyone would like to try it them self.

ill need to fine the cd with my bass pics on it... and sign up for photobucket(im so behind the times:lol: )

I just put this here because i can't justify spending £10 on a bass i use as a backup, i have grover straplocks on my thunderbird (metal cross screw on ones). By the way none of my local music shops sell the 50p plastic ones only the schaller ones.

Try getting cheap ones in Britiain. I'm in Scotland and every shop I tried didn't stock them, they wanted a ****load of money to order them in. So I went on Ebay and bought ones from there, and they were £15, a lot more than 3 can$.

Plastic ones cost £1.50 each here in Edinburgh. I've seen some pretty cool metal ones online, but I don't think I need them. My strap buttons are pretty big and I have a leather strap that takes half an hour to put on.

Would someone mind posting a picture of a straplock? I've heard about 'em, but I haven't actually seen one before I don't think... Personally, I just wad duct tape around the ends of my straps, works fine for a while.

i prefer shaller straplocks... you replace the whole strap pin... it a two peice thing... strap pin and a lock that ataches to ur strap which goes on and off by pulling tle ball at the end... works great. and it was half the price of normal straplocks

cliff... or yea go to bottle cap idea if u want the strap to stay on permently... not a bag idea tho

02-23-2006, 04:31 AM
also 3 pence washers work amazingly, they are more discreet than the big bottle caps lol

but anything that screws on is better than straplocks that come off, like dunlop, they come off all the time, the hard way to find this out is seeing ur mate's face just as the headstock came flying towards him lol

02-23-2006, 02:01 PM
I don't know schaller and grover don't come off easily. I had to use a pair of pliers to unscrew my grovers once.

Use the actuall strap button ones, you replace the strap button with the strap locks.

fuzzyhair
04-02-2006, 01:19 PM
I think that if you took off the pin and found a washer that fit over the small part, but stopped at the big part, that it would work excellent. You just couldn't take the strap off.

05-30-2006, 05:26 AM
How the hell do you sew your strap on?

masterofdisaster
05-30-2006, 11:59 AM
you take floss(or something similar) and you sew the hole so its smaller. if you want you can also take off the buttons and put the strap in between the buttons and the body. aes is right, they dont go anywhere

hartke20g
05-30-2006, 01:46 PM
can someone with bottle cap or washer 'straplocks' post some pics? i don't see how it's the easiest thing in terms of removing the strap.
are there straplocks out there that will let me take my strap off in 5 seconds without having to unscrew the strap pins? because i put my strap on the actual strap pin, not the screw, meaning that the strap goes around the recessed part of the strap pin.

I tried putting straplocks on my epiphone les paul standard,
The schaller ones, and the pin was too small because the utter twat who owned the guitar before me put HUGE screws in it. so The smaller screw kept ripping out
So i went rummaging through my old toolbox and found Much bigger screws
but with the same size head as the schaller screws
And i screwed em in uber tight and now my strap is LOCKED FOREVER! MUhahahahahaa
AND when i was finding new screws i found this wierd screwdriver that can screw/unscrew screws that have been completly threaded. i used it on my old epi SG. i was like :O

It's my opinion that the Schaller straploks are the best. They have the best system, and very high quality.

Before that I had washers on one of my guitars for awhile, it worked alright, considering I didn't care about the looks of that guitar.

I had the same problem when installing the Schaller's on my LP. I didn't even put the new screws in, instead I used the original screws out of the LP and sanded down the heads so the were smaller, then I had to bore out the straplock so the original screws would fit through.
