My freshman year teacher taught me a nasty little independence exercise that I thought I'd demonstrate for you guys. The pattern consists of paradiddles played between the hands under a 3:2 or 2:3 ostinato between the feet. I usually like to phrase the pattern in 6/4 (or 2 bars of 3/4), as it is about 100x easier that way, but once you become comfortable with it, try phrasing it in 4/4.
Unfortunately, my camera seems to have a personal grudge against my hi-hat, and likes to let my snare drum drown it out in the mix. Luckily, you can still at least hear it a bit, and you can see the cymbal moving, so hopefully you will be able to get the idea.

Dammit I wanna try this! My kit isn't setup though as we are renovating our studio. We share a common passion from cross-rhythms, polyrhythms, and independance excercises. :)

Dude...just learn it how I did: tapping on my knees and stomping on the floor. ;) Drives anyone else in the room nuts, but you can practice 24/7.

Those are Emperors on the batter heads and ambassadors on the resonants, although the former not by choice. The bottom....4 toms (including the one to the left that I don't think you can actually see in this video) I picked up about a year 1/2 ago over the summer. The guy who sold them to me sold them with emperors on, so when I decided to combine my kits, I felt obliged to complete the set and get emperors for my top 3 as well. I like the emperors, they're good heads, but I'd probably want to go even more open and get ambassadors instead.
All of the drums are tuned rather high, resonant sides considerably higher than the batters. Unfortunately, the dynamic of this room aren't the greatest. :( Those two floor toms especially sound a hell of alot better on stage.

I'm...sorry?
iv never seen anybody play where the butt end of the stick doesnt stick out past their pinky a little bit, maybe its just the angle of the camera, not bashing you because obviously from the video you are pretty good, just never seen it before.

Aaaah, ok. Yeah, I have a tendency to play a little further back on the stick. Can't quite remember where it came from....I think I started doing it in order to add a little bit of weight to my strokes, resulting in more powerful hits with less effort. You can also do the opposite and swing high up the stick for lighter playing....nice way of cheating dynamics. ;)

thats cool man, i tried it out for a bit and it does have a lot different feel and sound, it was harder for me to play clean at faster tempos, but thats just because iv never tried it before. keep it up dude.

Cool idea dude, I'm digging it. I'll have to give it a try when I get my kit back at home tomorrow, or at school tomorrow on my knees when I'm bored. I'd like to see the video, but the link says it expired. But again, very cool idea.

ah, simple to the mind, extremely hard to the body, I'm going to try that tommorow its 4 am and its harder to play extremely soft while thinking so when I can play medium I'll try it with singles then hopefully after about 10 minutes I'll be slightly able to diddle it

Ok. I discovered the beauty and wonder that is youtube, and am in the process of uploading the file onto there. When it goes through, I'll post the link here. I may try and re-record this video as well, as this was an old rough take and could have gone better.

Alright...here we go. I apologize if it's difficult to discern, as I'm recording this on a digital camera that's not meant for recording loud instruments and the room acoustics aren't the greatest, but hopefully you guys will be able to hear everything clear enough to understand what is going on.

Ah, thanks. Sorry about the poor EQing...I've been trying everything I can to bring out that hi-hat more, but to no avail...unless I muffled the snare drum a bit. Hmm....

Well, I haven't seen him in about 3 1/2 years, but if I happen to run into him, I'll be sure to.
I can see it now: "hey, some guy on an internet message board said your exercise is cool!"
"What? Who the hell are you?"

I noticed something kinda wierd in the videos. The audio falls behind the video, I can tell you are playing it, but it looks funny

Hmm...I believe that that is a youtube problem, possibly a conflict with Quicktime software. I've never had a problem viewing the files on my computer, nor have others when I sent them the file directly. Maybe try saving it to your comp?
