No friggin ways man, The Misfits are a massive influence on the whole scene, just run up a search on all the new age punk bands who've covered their stuff. Everyone from Social Distortion to AFI have ripped off a Misfits song. And the dark/horror punk thing they started is my favourite subculture by far, everything my band writes is in some way inspired by the misfits. Although I will agree that Samhain are ****kicking, "All Murder, All Guts, All Fun" is a sweet song. Danzig are pretty good too, "Mother", "Am I Demon" and "13" are my personal favourites

RIP Ian Curtis
08-17-2005, 09:52 PM
but I wouldn't bother with any Misfits album, none of them are solid good enough, just get the boxed set or steal it all off the internet to stop the poxy new lineup getting any cash.

I dont really get all the 'lets hate the new misfits' stuff, i've not seen the original lineup live so i can't compare properly, and obviously danzig was a better singer, but the new misfits are a fun band to watch, sure their not the greatest or most original, but if i was wanting original music all the time then i probably wouldn't listen to punk.

I wonder how many people are saying "Danzig>Graves" just to sound cool.

I really understand why everyone has to be so stuck up about this. Admit it, Graves is a very talented vocalist. Like him or not, the man can sing. And his style really brought out the 50's rock influence in the band's music, which I like.

As much as I love Danzig, he's human as well, and has made some bad albums himself. I really believe that a lot of people are just glorifying him and dissing Graves to sound more tr00... or whatever the hell it is punks call it. I don't know, I'm a metalhead.

RIP Ian Curtis
08-19-2005, 01:43 AM
yay for steerpike. i'd agree with the 50's rock influence thing, that is something i dig heavilly in the misfits. And who cares if Graves isn't a screaming leftwing hippie, Johnny Ramone was a republican party member all his life, it's not like the misfits or the ramones ever really pushed a politcal idea

Steerpike
08-19-2005, 01:46 AM
I think Graves' personal politics is only part of it. Truth is, it seems a lot of people dismiss Graves as inferior for the sole fact that he's not the original singer.

I've seen a lot of similar crap in R&M as well, and it's all the same bullshit reasoning. People are just too married to the diea of a particular line-up, and blind themselves to the virtues of another.

RetiredAt21
08-19-2005, 01:47 AM
I think Danzig sucks for the most part, but his stuff with the Misfits is a million times better than what Graves did with the Misfits. I doubt anyone is saying it "to be cool."

Steerpike

I doubt anyone is saying it "to be cool."

Don't be too quick on that. Remember that stupidity is ubiquitous and never discriminates. Punks, rockers, metalheads, ska fans, blues hipsters, jazz junkies... No matter what genre you look into, there's always someone who's going to make dumbass remarks to sound more competent and "pure."

RetiredAt21
08-19-2005, 01:57 AM
Well, mostly everyone agrees that the Misfits with Danzig were way better than the Misfits with Graves. With Graves, they weren't really punk anymore, they were on the verge of metal.

I liked the old Misfits for a lot of reasons. One of them being the period of my life when I discovered punk and self expression. I still like listening to old Misfits. What I have heard of the new Misfits I don't really like. Without Danzig (Even though I detest his cheesy solo ego-metal) the Misfits are "the shadow of the Misfits".

RIP Ian Curtis
08-19-2005, 02:13 AM
i like how graves is more melodic

Steerpike
08-19-2005, 02:23 AM
Well, Danzig has a very ghoulish crooning voice. He sounds like he could be equally at home in a jazz band as a punk or metal group. The Elvis-impersonator accent also adds a little levity and gives his singing a sort of dark humor to it, even in his solo work which can get pretty heavy lyrically.

Graves has more of a 50's rocker howl. Like Danzig, he clearly draws influence from rockabilly and classic rock, but his voice is smoother, more lulling. He can still get a good rock 'n' roll voice going when he needs to, but his true strength is in his sustain and dynamics.

So, to sum it up:

-Danzig has a more aggressive voice, and is able to shift easily between clean and dirty vocals with a crooning tone that gives him a sort of classical, sinister sound.
-Graves is like a classic rock singer who has a blues-inspired howl designed to milk as much feel out of each note as possible.

I think they're both great in their own ways.

Very illogical argument. The Misifts gave birth to bands like Blink 182, slipknot, and slayer. Iggy, although indirectly gave birth to pop-punk, he did directly give birth to almost the entire punk scene. With Iggy, you take the good with the bad. With The Misfits, you take the bad with the crappy.

Stfu you little ****. The Misfits brought nothing new to the punk scene except a slightly darker tone. Instead of talking about rebellion and the topics of great punk rock bands like The Sex Pistols, The Addicts, Clash, and Old Bad Religion music, they talked about blood, zombies, and killing. In my opinion, they shouldn't even be classified as Punk Rock, considering Punk Rock started off as music to get away from the mainstream, talking about rebellion and fighting the system. Huh. That post made me think... about how it used to be acceptable for music to just be fun.

I was always taught to believe that you didn't have to be an angry political activist to play punk. I thought the genre was started as a statement that you didn't need to have a major label or years of schooling in a conservatory to make good music.

...or just change their name to The Black Ramfits.

Anyways, I think The Misfits are legenedary for a reason. They had fun with their music.
I don't why fans and fiends harsh so much on the big 96' line-up change, the "original" Misfits went through 10 different band line-ups before the called it quits in 83'. Just ask Diane DiPiaza, Jimmy Battle, Manny, Franché Coma, Mr. Jim, Rick Riley, Bobby Steele, Joey Image, Arthur Googy, Todd Swalla, and Brian Damage (all "original" Misfits). Glenn Danzig is not an easy man to work with.

Antiflagsetsfire, you're an arse. Even the most political of the proto-punk bands (The MC5, maybe you've heard of them?) were only about chaning society through "drugs, rock and roll and f'ucking in the streets", to quote their manager. The first band to really bring politics into the whole thing was the Clash, doing their rock against racism thing. Before that, punk was just about kicking it to ****ty prog-rock hippies and having a good time making fast, fun music. All of my songs are about blood, zombies and killing. I write that kind of song because I don't give 3 fu'cks about the government and I'm not going to pretend I do just to conform to your ideas of what's "punk". I like to hear songs about zombies, blood and killing, I like to write songs about zombies, blood and killing and I like to play songs about zombies, blood and killing. So f'uck you very much.

I am a huge Misfits fan, they are pretty much my favorite band. And by misfits I mean during the old danzig times.

Even though I hate how Only is just using the Misfits name to get himself some more money, but I still go to see him in concert. Its a decent show and they play mostly all of the old greats and a few of the decent new songs. As well as some black flag, *and Ramones when I saw them, while Marky was the drummer*

Danzigs solo stuff isnt that good, hes only made like 3 good songs off like what 5 albums? But I am still going to see him in concert in October when hes with Doyle for a Misfits set at MSG.

-------------------------------------------------- Bull**** all of the above don't bother reading.

Anyways, this is to the maker of this topic, forget static age even though you probably bought it already. Go get walk amoung us, it is there best cd by far. Static age is good, it does have Last Caress.

1. Walk Amoung Us
2. Legacy of Brutatality * dont bother getting if you have static age, its pretty much the same album with a few differnt tracks, Where Eagles Dare, who killed Marilyn.
3. Earth A.D. if your into metal get it
4. Static Age- Its a cd with mostly great singles.
5. Evilive- a live cd that is pretty much hilarious.

My three favorites woudl have to be Walk Among Us, Static Age, and American Psycho, in no particular order.

Harper Only: Danzig's doing a gig with Doyle? I'm really pissed now that I won't get to see that.

I have to ask though, does this mean Doyle's going to be getting back into performing soon? As I said earlier, I believe he went on hiatus because he and his wife had their first child so he wanted to spend time with his family.

I think he's in his late 40's. I read somewhere that when he made his first recording with the band, he was like 17 or 18. Wouldn't be too much of a stretch. When the Misfits started out, they were a bunch of young guys who could barely play their instruments at all.

Stop. How is Graves copying Danzig?
im not saying he is but i think thats how jerry only kind of wanted him to be. im sure graves has better solo material and what not he just didnt belong in the misfits neither any of the lineup. But i think the newest line up (jerry, dez, robo) is a better lineup then graves and dr. chud. All in all, Danzig should be the only one being frontman in the misfits

It's stripped-down headbanging music that relies on minimalist production and ensemble.

The whole point of punk is that you don't need virtuosity to make good music. If you know enough to write a three-chord progression and carry a tune, that's good enough.

RIP Ian Curtis
08-22-2005, 10:42 PM
The Misfits made the dead people fit in. They didn't before, and because punk (at least in the 70's when they formed) can take in new ideas and concepts much more readily than most other styles, it became part of the whole scene. I enjoy the dead people stuff, much more than I enjoy someone telling me I should hate the government.

they dont do the same kind of stuff...then opeth and the beatles do the same stuff. its pretty much the same, guitars, vocals, drums...yha, but its totally different. the only thing thats the same is Glenns voice, but in misfits it was less under control. Well... when I say I saw the Misfits, that is actually a huge exaggeration. I went to Newport TJ's, and I watched Adequate 7, they were absolutely incredible, as usual. They have so much energy and their songs will never ever get old! When they'd finished, there was a chant of "Jerry!" Then this band came onto the stage, and started butchering some of my favourite songs. The "Misfits", if you can even call them that anymore, took the stage and just took a back catalogue of ****ing incredible songs. And played them with such immense shitness, that myself and my girlfriend left. I went to the cloakroom, and nearly cried as I heard a steroid junkie and his backing band take apart possibly my favourite Misfits song, Astro Zombies. I left, telling Jamie from Adequate 7 that they owned, and that we were leaving. He said he thought they were really bad too. but there was the biggest crowd I'd ever seen in Tj's. And the band was shite!
I just had to get out of there. But let me say... it was well worth the £12 to see the support. Jerry Only is a cocksucking moneywhore. And I hate him for what he is doing to the legacy of quite possibly my favourite punk band ever...

You all should know I don't like the misfits much too, at least the older ones. But they do suck much more nowadays than back in the day. They used to have some decent songs.

the misfits are/were my favourite punk band of all, no politics, no social commentary, no bullsh'it. Just murder, guts and fun.

They're all moneywhores. Misfits were pretty crap in the first place, I'm not surprised they suck now.

This man speaks the truth.

Anyone ever seen the George A. Romero movie "Bruiser"? Has an awesome climax where the cocaine addicted sleazy bad guy gets crucified onstage at a misfits gig and gets tortured and then killed with light show lasers by the good guy? Tis an awesome film. Has the best songs of the Graves era on it too, Descending Angel etc.

I might go see them when they come to my town but I am not sure. I am also pissed off at how much Misfits merchandise there is out there. So many little 12 year old wanabe's weraing legacy of brutality t's and fiend club patches it sickens me.

Why Why couldn't i've been around in the Danzig era
the truth. i saw them live last april. They wern't too bad, they played a lot of their old stuff and they only played about 5 of their new songs(cap songs). Even though jerry is a greedy arsehole, im more pleased to see an orginal member fronting than graves

Dude, the Misfits are one of my favorite bands. But without Glen Danzig, they arent the Misfits. So my opinion to do is, just forget about the fact that they are still a band. I just listen to there old stuff only. Listening to the new Misfits just pisses me off, so... I just think of it like they broke up when Danzig split. Dude, its the same idea with DK and Jello. Same concept...

If i was god i would reunite Misfits, Dead Kennedys , Black Flag, bring the Ramones back to life Same with Joe Strummer & a whole bunch of other bands that would take to long to list. But thats just me

fair enough. I don't mind a little politics thrown in from some people. For example the Dead Kennedys can get away with it. But lamers like Anti-Flag are, I feel, just jumping on the bandwagon and their views are, at best, half baked.

My band is playing a halloween show and all the bands are "going" as a different band. So far there are bands doing DK covers, Minor Threat covers, Alkaline Trio covers, and we opted for the Misfits. I thought it would be fitting for a band to go as the Misfits for a Halloween show. I'm trying to decide on a final setlist though..... (obviously we are gonna play "halloween.") Any ideas on how to fill out our setlist? I don't wanna play just stereotypical Misfits covers (i.e. Last Caress, Attitude, Where Eagles Dare)

Maybe Demonomania? Astro Zombies? Fiend Club?

I'm not a huge fan of Danzig era Misfits, I prefer Graves... Better songs, better production, better singer...

last caress,we are 138, die die my darling, i turned into a martion, hatebreeders, wolfsblood etc. look at the songs on collection I and II to see their most famous songs.

Back on subject, either the misfits should get danzig back (or atleast Doyle) back in the band or they sould just call it quits

Yeah they need Danzig or the better stop kidding themselves.

This is a little off topic but I am curious...why did DK break up. I just recently got into them so I don't know a lot about their history. Is their ever any chance of them reuniting? Just wondering...could someone please clear this up for me. thanks
