Every human being in the world is emo. So I dunno what you're asking? How to play emo music? Just play music with strong sincerity and put emotion into it, shouldn't be too hard.

all you need to do is dye your hair black, wear it down in front of your face, get your lip pierced kinda off to the side, wear all black but with pink logos, paint your finger nails black but not all of them and make sure to look and act sad all the time
gav will come in here and ban me for that, and then tell you all about how to be emo.

Dude... If the band plays in drop tunings, and you need to droptune to match, then do. Still, just because the band downtunes doesn't mean you have to. Likewise, if they don't, doesn't mean you can't if you don't want to.
Play what you want, and what sounds good. Boundaries don't get pushed by asking how to 'fit in' in that way.
I'm in a metal band... I don't fit a stereotypical metal bassist I guess, in image or in playing. But hey, that's just me.
And you should just be you! Don't look at it as an emo band, look at is as your band! :D
:smash:
The only emo-ish band I ever got into was Thursday, to me they seemed to stand out form the rest of those bands. I like the Full Collapse album.
Alot of that emo stuff is in Drop D, maybe some of the more hardcore based bands will go down to CGCF.

just because your in an emo band doesnt mean you have to do what every other emo bassist does.
id have a lissen to thrice any way though because they have a very impresive bassist and play emoish music. all so give anti flag a lissen, i know there not emo but its the style of bass playing that can be aplied to that sort of music.

I will say that the bassist from Taking Back Sunday (they're emo right?) Matt Rubano is a great bassist. He worships at the temple of James Jamerson which gets him an A+ in my book.

Well, I would listen to bands like Rufio, TBS, and the bands that the rest of the band like.
Browse through the pop-punk forum and the emo/hardcore forum and just download random things. But beware, the emo forum is very very picky on what is emo and what isn't. Try pop-punk first.

TBS, Rufio, Hawthorne Heights, etc., is all mainstream emo and isn't "true" emo...I just usually cite specific popular emo bands.
Yes, edge, Matt Rubano from TBS is an awesome bassist and worships Jamerson.
Anyway, actual emo bands for you to listen to:

The Number 12 Looks Like You
Saosin

For some more mainstream "screamo" or "emo" (stuff that's not actually emo or screamo/hardcore/metalcore but people call it that anyway):
"Dale Earnheart's Seatbelt" - The Bled
"The City Sleeps in Flames" - Scary Kids Scaring Kids
"Your Sword Vs. My Dagger" - Silverstein
"The Ides of March" - Silverstein
Anything by Taking Back Sunday...the old CD was better but the bassist, Shaun Cooper, wasn't as good as their new bassist, Matt Rubano, but his old lines were pretty cool...check out "Great Romances" and "Cute Without the E"
^ That's all mainstream "emo" stuff and isn't actually "emo" but it's labeled as it...eh, whatever. :p
etc.
For the record, Hawthorne Heights is a scar and blemish on waht is true emo...yes, emo is mainly a fad and there are scenesters and posers out there, but hey, that's in every genre. I dress the way I dress and listen to the music I listen to because I like it. I don't do it to fit in. If you don't like it, fine, but don't bash me for my life choices. :)

Please note that most of those bands are not truly "emo" in the ACTUAL sense of the word but are in the pop-cultural sense and commonly depicted sense. :thumb:
Also, a brief word on emo:
"Emo" no longer has any set characteristic. Origianlly, it applied to the first emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate and Fugazi...now it spands way too much.
Emo is characterized by passionate lyrics, heartfelt guitar, melodic leads, and deep emotion in the music, usually despair or some other such emotion.
However, emo has branched into many different styles. "Straight" emo can be seen though the works of Christopher Carrabba, better known as Dashboard Confessional. Emo has become a bit more mainstream with bands like Taking Back Sunday. Also, "emocore" is not unpopular, with bands like Anatomy of a Ghost dominating that scene.
From emo also stemmed hardcore and screamo, the much more brutal forms of emo. While it still has passionate lyrics and melodic leads, the lyrics tend to be more brutal and the guitar and other instruments in general. The guitar is very "jagged" sounding and the screams assault the ear with a plethora of emotion. Hardcore music can be seen through bands like Bane, Guns Up, Blue Monday, etc.. Screamo can be seen through Saetia, Hot Cross, Circle Takes the Square, etc..

Spring
Deeper Than Inside
For Want Of
Hain's Point
All There Is
Drink Deep*
Other Way Around
Theme*

Remainder
Persistent Vision
Nudes
End On End
All Through A Life*
Hidden Wheel
In Silence/Words Away
Patience
*is especially good/good bass.
Also, listen to some Fugazi. Although they arent emo per se, they did influence some later emo bands. "Waiting Room" is worth listening to.

Hey, I suggest you check out "The Sound of Animals Fighitng." After Saosin's lead singer Anthony Green left, he started a side project with a bunch of other guys from bands (I think the drummer from Weezer, etc.) and they all take on animal names and refuse to let anyone know who they are (I only know it's Anthony because of his distinctive voice). Definitely check them out; it's like an acid trip put to music...they are so amazing and they really really know their theory. Every human being in the world is emo. So I dunno what you're asking? How to play emo music? Just play music with strong sincerity and put emotion into it, shouldn't be too hard.
hahaha yes yes!
to be honest man "emo bassists" wtf???? dude I will say it time and time again and look at what i look like, I aint emo! I have long hair doesnt make me emo. All music is emo, because all music should be played and sung with emotion... meh Just play how you feel and what fits with the music. To be honest I dont know what you guys are going for so I can't give you any references. Definitly dont go off that pop punk / rock stuff they have on MTV that is the worst oh man THE worst.
To be honest if you want a good example if heart felt music sung and played with emotion. Hopesfall. OLD stuff this is "the satellite years" and there ep "no wings to speak of" A song that really kills me is Dana Walker the end part is instrumental but great alot of there songs have that in it and its just great sung and played with emotion man.
For the sake of your band I wouldn't keep it restricted to a genre, you guys need to find YOUR sound, that can be a mix of things and quite unique which makes a band great. Play what you feel is right and a good mix to the music. Just dont classify your band as emo.

Woah dude, that band is awesome. They sound kind of like this local band that my band played with this one time, they were called Adelle.
Yeah man, the shows at Boston can get pretty rough. I was originally from Philly, where there was a really crazy scene. There's always the kids with bandanas and camo shorts that are buff as hell beating each other up. Although, I wear camo shorts all the time, except when it's cold when I wear girl's jeans unless I'm getting bitched at by someone thinking I'm gay.

most of these bands today dont consider themselves emo thats just a word us listeners (not me) turned into a genre alot of mis labeling going on. Its hard to label a band thought. But Ive found that most "Emo" bands really are just a rock/punk pop band with some catchy material and lyrics written to relate to those teenie boppers with relationship problems and think they have it oh so hard. I say play music and thats it. For all the discussions about emo in these forums if you take the time added up, jeez we'd all be a bit better with our instruments. *think.

Psht, don't get your panties in a bunch...I don't care if you don't like emo. :D
James: Psht, yeah, OK; my friend Tony was in a pit and broke his arm because someone brought brass knuckles in the pit and was blindly throwing his arms around as hard as he could...then a fight ensued...with a total of 8 broken bones and 10 cops getting involved.
/avoids hardcore shows like rape now, unless his friend's band is playing
It's not that people on the scene hate me. Quite the contrary; I'm pretty popular, I just don't really like the music too much. That's all. :p

With my old band, My guitarist was our screamer and a **** good one we couldnt afford him to soley just give up and do screaming and sacrifice playing. So I attempted to and Although I considered my voice to be quite nice and at the time so did they we got a second mic and through the PA I sounded pretty ****ty so I gave up. Nothing like a bad screamer / singer to kill the rest of the sound. Plus I dont know how people scream or sing for whole sets and come out with a perfect voice. Id loose mine after 1 song.

Ahh, just like me. I was a guitarist and a screamer at first, and I was the lead guitarist at that. So it was pretty hard, and I just couldn't do it. The ability to do it for a long time just comes with practice. My friend is in this band Skeleton Proof Tanks, and he screams, and when his mic broke he screamed through the whole mix without a mic, and could still talk afterwards. It was insane, but his voice sounded really messed up afterwards.
And, to your user title, which mosh parts do you prefer? One of my old bands was just alternating 2-step parts, buildups, and breakdowns over and over again with the occasional double bass roll, so we were pretty much one long mosh part.

*sigh*
You all dissapoint me...;)
TBS, Rufio, Hawthorne Heights, etc., is all mainstream emo and isn't "true" emo...I just usually cite specific popular emo bands.
Yes, edge, Matt Rubano from TBS is an awesome bassist and worships Jamerson.
Anyway, actual emo bands for you to listen to:
Moss Icon
Indian Summer
Lickgoldensky
Portrait
I'm more into screamo, which is a bit more melodic yet heavier and thrashier than emo...it's very similar but very different. Band suggestions:
Saetia
Love Like...Electrocution
Living a Day in Black and White
Circle Takes the Square
The Number 12 Looks Like You
Saosin
Fear Before the March of Flames
Love Lost but Not Forgotten
Kaospilot
Welcome the Plague Year
The Kodan Armada
Current favorite songs:
"Patchwork Neurology" - Circle Takes the Square
".44 Caliber Love Letter" - Alexisonfire
"Behold a Pale Horse" - Welcome the Plague Year
"Chipped Tooth Smile" - After School Knife Fight
Anything by Saetia

:thumb:
-Gav
curisves BASSIST plays a fender jazz, there CELLOIST plays a yamaha electric cello.
emerys bassist is terrible, faint isnt emo, rilo kiley is indie not emo, haha straylight run, thursdays bass player is terrible *totally wishes he had his spot*
They have both an electric bass and a cello...Cursive is one incredibly talented band if you're into slow indie like that.
:thumb:

uhhh they arent slow, they definitley have some upbeat stuff, having all of their albums i can definitley tell you they do some upbeat heavier stuff
Oh, yeah. I bloody love Cursive. I was really sad to hear that Gretta left, because I thought that The Ugly Organ was an amazing album.
Edit: The Burst and Bloom EP, also.
domestica is also really good, all of their other albums are good as well, but domestica, ugly organ, burst and bloom are my top 3.
hahaha yes yes!
to be honest man "emo bassists" wtf???? dude I will say it time and time again and look at what i look like, I aint emo!
Just dont classify your band as emo.
and ill say it time and time again, you could stop trying to figure out why its called emo....and just go with it.

that is not an acurate way to define a genre at all. every single thing in there is subjective, any piece of music with guitar and vocals could be described as that by one person or another. if this topic realy has to turn into an argument about what emo is can someone at least define the genre properley.

No. Emo was started by bands like Moss Icon and Rites of Spring who found straight up hardcore to be restraining and added more emotional and artistic aspects to the music. Emo is "emotional hardcore."
Yay for people being ignorant. :D
