The melody she played
the one that rang in my eyes
like the sound of the train leaving
sounds of her piano and the spotlight
lingered like dew on dresses just before falling
A musical prayer
in the hospital chapel
She’s not even aware
that the song she plays
slips through the door
and into my ear
Grabbed her coat and placed on her face a mask
but I stopped her at the street corner
to convince her to remove that false face
though she said it was an impossible task
I tried to sing her the notes
which she played on that hospital piano
but the chords were caught
in my unforgiving throat
I revealed my hand
and the semblance it held
she touched her face
and began to understand
two dead leaves touched the ground
and the piano played one last melody
a song of such genuine sound
