Alright, for a bit i was looking around and was gonna get some new pickups for my guitar but then i realized that it wasnt worth it because it was a sh*ty guitar (Fernendes Raven X). So now i have been looking at some new guitars. I've been mostly focusing on Gibsons (SG/Les Paul). My only problem is that i dont have enough money for most of the Gibsons that appeal to me. I was wondering if it would be a good idea just to buy a high-end Epiphone insted. Can someone tell me the differences between the two and what you suggest?
Thanks

High end Gibsons > Hi/Lo End Epis

High end Epis > Low end Gibsons

Low end Gibsons > Low end Epis

The gibsons that are cheaper.

Gibson SG Faded... Gibsons under $1000 are low end, pretty much.

If you buy there most expensive AL... (The AL3500) its like $5-600 and will probally be better than the epi elitist.

Yes I agree. Since there is a lack of quailty control these days with gibson I feel there are quite a few "low end" gibsons riding the gibson name all the way to the bank.

I've heard that Epiphone's Semihollow/Hollow body models (Sheraton's, Casino's, and Dot's) are really good. Even better than Gibsons.

I would really like an Epiphone Dot just to noodle with.

It's really an awesome guitar. Epiphones can be quite nice guitars.

i could be wrong but i think guitars like the sheraton and casino are made in america, and that the epis with the e on the truss cover are american

I have an Epiphone LP Standard with some Seymour Duncans in them and I wouldn't change a thing :)

It's the same with high and low end Gibsons... Most are junk, some are gems!

I love my SG special, and i wouldn't swap it for anything except a Gibson SG Standard of the same playability as mine ;)!

I'd recommend a Gibson, but I'd also advice you to have a look at some other brands too. Check out ESP, Ibanez, PRS, Jackson, Washburn, Dean.

yeah i was looking into Jacksons but they arent bery versitile, but i might look into Ibenez. I hate all strats because its so hard to palm mute high strings (because of the volume knob). the thing is that there is no way that i could ever afford a really high-end gibson cause im on a 700 dollar budget. could someone maybe recomend some nice guitars in that range? im lookin for something with humbuckers, with a really nice tone, and that has those **** volume knobs out of the way.

Definately a Gibson if you can afford one. Try saving up for a bit longer, or alternatively check out eBay or another place that sells used guitars. The Gibson LP Standard 60s neck is really the way to go :)

The only Brand Id recommend you out of Gibson/Epiphone is Jackson for your price range. Jackson makes some really fine guitars. I dont think Ive ever really played a poorly-built one. But, you get what you pay for. Remember that..

A Melody Maker

I would go for an Epiphone Elitist Series guitar. They are around 1000 dollars.

Epi LP Standard, or Elitist.

Honestly gibson is just overpriced and somewhat over rated so epi's can deliver and so can gibsons but for the price just stick with a high end epi

I know alot of people will probably disagree with me on this but I actually prefer the feel of lower end Gibsons to the standards. Id go for the gibson Les Paul Special or double cutaway if I were in your position. I dont really like the look of a figured top, anyway, so I think why pay the extra grand for a standard.

Not true. Maybe as in like the Epiphone will have binding and all that dandy stuff, but the Gibson LP Studio is a much, much better guitar than an Epiphone.

Um... well they both suck. If you want a good Les Paul style guitar, seriously look at those Agiles, my friend Doog has one, it's amazing for the price, and i've got a Michael Kelly Les Paul copy and its amazing too, a bit pricier though and i would say not as much as a steal as those Agile's.

As for Gibson, ever since they started mass producing guitars quality has gone to ****, and they only sell on the name because their quality was once outstanding... Around the 50's. Much like Fender, but they're not quite as bad. Epiphone's are just a ****tier but made in Korea, by people payed $0.50 and hour and just don't care.

even if you get a 600 dollar sg special faded. its still a gibson, they just lack all the binding, nice pups, inlays. It's STILL a gibson, still going to sound/play insane. not to mention last you a lifetime.

I happen to own a epiphone les paul standard+ as well as an array of Gibbys and my Epi has tooken a beating and I've had to replace a nut, pickup cover, input, toggle. They aren't made THAT well. They are nice guitars sound/playability/durability. But if your planning to rock the **** out then I'd go with a low end gibson so she wont break on ya.

Wow I'm glad you contributed. Good going man.

I'd go for a Godin, but I'm a godin whore, waayyy cheaper and good still, hope you can hunt down a dealer. The LG p90 has a freaking 9.7 on harmony central. I want that guitar so bad, I might have one come thursday too. I got a sweet deal, just gotta play the thing to be sure :thumb:

LG P90 (http://www.godinguitars.com/godinlgp.htm)

You can order them off of musiciansfriend, but you're gunna pay up a bit (~50 bucks) and you won't be able to try them out.

Troof. My Epiphone LP Standards tune-o-matic bridge ripped out of the holes. My Gibson gives me no problems.

I'd be prepared to bet a fair percentage of people on here that say 'Epi>Gibson' are simply jumping a band wagon and have little to know experience with either guitar, or don't know enough to tell the difference.

I don't know, for all I know, some Epiphones might out-do Gibson, I haven't played many. But I'm just saying don't take everything you hear on here as fact, things like this are notorious for band wagon jumpers.
