It's been awhile since I've seen a Psychobilly thread grace these boards, so I thought I'd start one...

I'll start with some of my favorite bands like Demented are Go, Necromantix, The Meteors, Mad Sin, Rev. Horton Heat, The Cramps (even though some don't consider them psycho) and many others.

One of my first shows was Demented are Go when they toured the states and I was amazed at the energy and the sound of the music. I was wondering what you guys thought of the genre.

i like the 12 step rebels and Demented are go!... the Bassist from 12 step rebel's was crazy live... duirng one of the songs, he put his Double Bass up on his shoulders behind his head(like how guitarists do) and was playing a solo.... it was so funny, because the crowd just stopped what they were doing... and jaws just dropped... good show

Read both mine and El_Shiznit's posts in that thread.

In short, psychobilly is blending rockabilly (which had a revival in the 80s, which lead to psychobilly) with punk, making it faster, with a lot of references to horror movies, hot rods, etc.

Brian Setzer may not be rocka/psychobilly, but it was certainly one of his influences.

The Stray Cats were part of the Rockabilly Revival, and Brain Setzer Orchestra was part of the swing revival that followed, and they had a lot of rockabilly influences because of Setzer's guitar playing. Both excellant bands. Setzer was great.

He kinda walks the fine line between...

The Reverend isn't psychobilly, he's just a rockabilly revivalist, or you could even go so far as calling him "punkabilly".

The Phenomenauts aren't, either, they're also just rockabilly/punkabilly, though they call themselves "rocket roll".

There are fairly strict guidelines to be a "psycho" band. For instance, the Cramps, who were the first to call themselves "psychobilly" (a term coined by Johnny Cash, FYI) aren't even true psychobilly.

Incidentally, I'm seeing the Reverend tonight for the second time. He puts on a killer show.

The Reverend isn't psychobilly, he's just a rockabilly revivalist, or you could even go so far as calling him "punkabilly".

I think there is a definite division in psychobilly between the band that combine rockabilly with being "Psycho" and singing about zombies and kinky sex. And then bands that combine the more solid punk sound with rockabilly.
So I'd put the Cramps in the Psycho end of Psychobilly and then things like early Living End and Reverand Horton Heat up the punk end.

With reference to the cramps, I think that seeing as in the late seventies the Cramps were playing songs like the Drug Train or Goo Goo Muck and calling it psychobilly they should be considered the first psychobilly band. Even though the bands that define the genre for many other people are quite different to the Cramps, I still put them first.

Even though the bands that define the genre for many other people are quite different to the Cramps, I still put them first.

The main problem in calling them psycho is that they don't have a stand-up bass player, and there was even a phase where they had no bass player. As I said, there are strict guidelines for something to be true "psycho" and just a punked-up rockabilly band with mildly goth lyrics. The Cramps consider themselves nothing more than a rock n' roll band, just like the Reverend.

This is truth.

There is a lot of specific characteristics of psychobilly bands. But you can't take away the influence The Cramps had on a good portion of the psychobilly genre. They are a great band. Played a show at the state mental hospital in Napa not too far from me, my neighbour works there as well.

I just wanna say that i love nekromantix, and please everyone spell it right, Nekroman is a great musician and a great guy. I also like tiger army, mad sin, horrorpops (i know popabilly not psycho), and various other bands, i also like skobilly, which is just a rockabilly/psychobilly band with a horn section.

anyway thats my two cents.

Pseudo Man

The way I see it Rockabilly is a combination of Rock and roll and hillbilly, hillbilly being country and western without the western. This is the definition generally agreed upon among rockabilly afficianados (spelling?). The most pure rockabilly bands will have a stand up drummer as well as a stand up bass player, but then again you can't deny old hasil as being the hippest rockabilly cat therre ever was. I don't deny Nekromantix their psycho cred for not having a stand up drummer and I don't think it should be denied of the cramps for not having a bass player for most of their career.
Vast numbers of pure rockabilly outfits have no bassist at all.

The hair is a very important part of psychobilly. It's a very very fashion-oriented genre, which is one of the reasons it's so much different than punk rock. In punk, every tries their hardest to pretend it's not about the fashion; "It's all a state of mind, maaaaaannnn!"

Tiger Army is the only good psycho band period.

Wroooong! Although I am a big Tiger Army fan, that statement is completely false. If you think that, you probably don't know much about psychobilly. Other good bands include: Nekromantix, Mad Sin, Demented Are Go!, The Koffin Kats, The Sharks, The Meteors, Reverend Horton Heat, Guana Batz, The Rezurex, The Coffin Nails, Batmobile, and more I don't feal like listing.

Tiger Army are alrightish. They kinda sound like if half of AFI decided to start a pschobilly side-project. Which is understandable considering the members. That being said "Never Die" is awesome. What you think the best psycobilly song of all time is?

Some of their stuff is a little bit too "scene" or what people term "emo", not as in emotional hardcore. Kinda turns alot of people off, I know it almost made me ignore them.

I like Tiger Army, but they're not nearly as good as Mad Sin, Nekromantix, Godless Wicked Creeps, and plenty others.
