So I joined this band that has another guitar player and Im excited about the full sound, but in the last band I was in I was the only guitar player, so I dont have a ton of experiance coming up with 2nd guitar parts. I definatlly want to add some color to his chord progressions but am not sure how.
So I have a simple Cmaj, Emaj, Fmaj, Gmaj progression. Anyone have any advice on where to start

I know modes but how do I incorporate. Do I want to play like a C Ionion over the c maj. Can I play an A Dorian over the C being that its the relative minor.
Basiclly what can I play over a C maj besides a c somewhere else that will add color to the chord?
I seem to remember something about chord tones are they the III and the VI of chord I cant remember

play lead melodies, or play variations of the chords that the other person plays, also it is effective if one of you stops playing during a verse or something...gives the parts where you both play alot more power

A basic rock mixup is having a rhythm guitarist doing the base chordal structure, and the lead guitarist playing more powerful, rhythmatic chords and licks on top of that.
Or you can be creative and have two seperate guitar parts doing counter melodies and the like.
