Anyone have any experiences/opinions of any of the following?

Alesis Monitor 1 Mk2's
Event TR5's
KRK Rokit 5's
Samson Resolv 65a's

Im half looking for some nice active monitors, for around £250ish max, just wondering if anyone had any advice. Also, i need them to be fairly compact, so that means no Behringer Truth's. :upset:

I checked out the Events, Rokits, and Alesis monitors. I didn't really like any of them. They just don't really compare to the mid-level monitors, like Dyn-Audio BM5a's etc.

I'd wait if you can, and save up for something nicer. If you're hard-pressed or just can't convince yourself to make the huge leap in price, then I'd go with 8" woofers if you can.

meh i don't really have the money to spend like £500 on just monitors, not only because my parents are being bitches, and say i spend too much on music stuff, but because there's other things i need to buy aswell. I dont really need "studio" perfection, but i DO need something better than my £40 logitech PC speakers lol. For now i'm heading towards the Events. Although their the most expensive of the list (well, from what i've seen), they seem to fit my needs, because their not too big. Thats the main concern, probably over price aswell, because i need to mount them on/near a corner desk, so a) dont want *too* much bass response, and b) being in a corner, it reduces the space i have to mount them properly.

After having a good look at the dimensions of each of the monitors, the only ones that arn't hi-fi speaker size are the Events (and their rather large) and the KRK's.

I had a look at the Yamaha MSP3's, but according to Sound on Sound their a bit harsh in the midrange, and the MSP5's are a little expensive (but i think they still suffer from the same problem)

But yeah, i dont really want to spend more than £250 on monitors, mainly because they get bigger as you spend more, and i have to budget somewhere i guess.

I wouldn't limit your budget in the monitors. I'd do it somewhere else. The monitors are your best shot and getting a good-sounding finished product. I made that mistake, and I've been regretting it for awhile now. You can only get stuff to sound so good when working with headphone monitors, regardless of how good they are. But that's my scenario, not yours.

The size issue is key, but you can find very good monitors with 5"-8" speaker sizes.

In my opinion, if you're going to limit your budget, I suggest doing so in the DIs, effects, and the headphone monitor system (if you use one). Those things are easy to get decent quality for cheap (in the case of effects, there's loads of good free stuff out there).

Yeah i completley understand this, but i have to draw the line somewhere. Yes, i could save up for better monitors, but im not in any way professional, or even semi-pro. Its more of a hobby for me at the moment, and although its what i want to do as a career, at the moment i have a lot else to do. Mainly school work, and i plan to build my own midi control surface, so thats going to eat at the finances.

To be honest, i could probably manage well enough with hifi speakers, because what i've done so far on my PC speakers is reasonable, mainly because im so used to how they sound, but my mixes do sound a bit off on other speakers, which is why i want a set of monitors.

Yeah, size is a major issue, because if they end up too big, they are going to be right in my face. I'd probably only just manage with most 6" monitors, never mind 8" ones, which sucks. Do monitors *have* to be mounted at head level, or can they be wall mounted higher up, and then angled downwards, as this might give me a bit more flexibility?

In the last few days, i've found a bit of a work-around, as i could re-configure how i was going to set up my audio stuff, so that i can have my monitors placed properly, but it would involve being further from my PC screen, which is less than ideal... though, if i get another screen, i can set it up like that, but then that will add another £100 to my expenses anyway.

In the next few days il make a little plan layout of my room, and show you the possibilities, as im not all that up to speed with monitor positioning.

In the meantime, could you reccomend some compact, but nice sounding monitors, near my price range, as I may have overlooked some manufactures.

Thanks very much for all the help,

Gaz
