View Full Version : band starting problems (kind of long)

ok, I'm 14 (almost 15) & i've been wanting to start a band since i was 12. I finally got the idea that I should put an ad in the local band member finding site we have here. So i did & only one person answered. I played the guitar when i posted it but she said she played the guitar & wanted a drummer. I said that was ok cause i was going to buy drums anyway.
so anyway i spent a while trying to buy drums but i only have $250 so its hard.....then a couple days ago i suggested i could sell my guitar & get a bass (i want to play bass anyway & im not into guitar anymore), at least so we could write songs till i got drums. I told her i could do it this week.
I really want to play in a band already, and I like her, and she likes the right kind of music (which is hard to find around here), and it's hard to find band members around here period.
So, I have to sell my guitar/trade my guitar for a bass (i'm kind of attached to my guitar but i'm not good at all & i have no motivation to get better), and get drums (I have enough money for this cheap PDP)
I'm going to the music store tomorrow but my mom's making me pay for gas (i dont have that much money so that will suck me dry :upset:) unless she forgets that she's making me pay for it. I don't know if they'll trade my guitar or if I'll have to put in money also. If i do (which i probably will) I'll have to save longer for a drumset (anywhere from 2-10 weeks depending on if my dad wants to give me any money)
The problem is, to get a bass & drums will leave me with no money at all but i REALLY want to start a band with her as soon as i can; and i told her i'd get a bass this week; and i don't want to wait a month anyway for the drums to get in stock, so I want to get a bass this week. I'm trying to do all this to leave me with as much money as possible, and with one of those instruments as soon as possible.
(I know how that sounds.......)
Anyway, what would you do in this situation? I want to play drums more than bass so I don't want to have to wait even longer if i have to take money out of my drum fund to pay for the bass. its like this big race or something. I'm very impatient.
This is really an opinion question, so maybe i'd take some of your advice. If you knew how impatient i am & how much i want to start a band you'd know how important it is.

If you want to play drums more than bass, you want to play drums more than bass. Don't settle just because you're in a hurry. Trust me, you'll have plenty of time to practice and get good on your instrument, you have your whole life ahead of you. A 2-10 weeks wait won't have that large of an affect on your life pertaining to music in the long run, you'll realize later.
If I were you, I'd just save up until I got the instrument I really wanted to play. But maybe that's just me.
I didn't read your post all too clearly, so excuse me if I responded wrong. Good luck.

...uh thanks. I'm going to the music store today so I'll ask them if i can play one of the basses & if i like it i guess I'll trade for it.........I don't know how I'd get the extra money though cause i only get $5 a week for lunch money :upset:
I guess later i could trade the bass for extra money for drums when they get back in stock :thumb:

GO THE BASS dude a few reasons
1. The drum kit you buy will be so bad the cymbals if it has any will sound like tin and crask and wont even be gig worthy
2. drummers are alot more common than bassers....

where i am drummers are way rarer then bassists...
anyway.
settle on one, and invest all ur money into it, she shud understand, i mean its gonna cost a bomb to buy a bass and a half decent drumset.
bass is more fun anyway, you'll grow to love the bass. if your into guitar and stuff you'll quite possibly get sick of the drums, no outlet for melodic creativity...

new news. not good news either. I went to the music store today and they'd only give me $210 for the guitar & everything, including the $50, and the decent basses cost $250 at least. :(
i couldn't sell it cause he said he already had too many epiphones in there anyway.
i'm going to one more music store & then i'll try to sell it on the internet or in the paper i guess.
why do these things have to be so hard? it's either going to have to be one of the other now
do you think i could sell my guitar & amp for $175?
......then i'd have $450,...... you can get a decent drumset for $450, but now thinking about bass again is making me want to play that too.
if your into guitar and stuff you'll quite possibly get sick of the drums, no outlet for melodic creativity...
man i never even thought of that & you're right :upset:

hell no, even worse, i think i look younger than 14 :upset:
ok so I'm selling my guitar & amplifier for $150, so that would be $420, which would be enough for either one.everyone's saying get a bass but i still don't know :( i do like to hit things. :naughty: ie drums, not people...you know what i mean.

I think I need to reinforce the idea of you getting what you want. Drums can be just as fun, if not funner (at least I find them funner,) than bass, even if you don't have a certain melody, you can still play along to recordings, and beats/rhythms are just as fun to learn as melodies, (or I would assume.) Bass can be fun too, so I hear, as long as you're willing to take the time to learn it properly and get good, (which is true for any instrument.) So I would advise just going with what you want, rather than listen to the people who say. "Bass is better" or "Drums is better."
Quality isn't that important when you're just starting out on an instrument. Of course you don't want crap, but then as long as it's not absolutely essential to have amazing equipment when you start, (drums are easier to upgrade in incriments, while bass is easier to totally revamp your entire set up, I'm talking financially.) Oh, and go with used equipment. You can get a lot more for a lot less.

why would you use a guitar amp as a bass amp......it would sound like crap

Drums.....boring....unmusical?
Get your head out of your ***, cause if you want to have a fight over the musicality of drumming, bring it on.
And I still want to see the hot chic :naughty:

wow your starting a band before you own the instrument, thats original. I started playing before I started the band.
I wanted to start a band. So I began writing lyrics and singing. Then I taught myself how to play guitar. So my band was technically in existence about 2 years before I even touched an instrument and here I am, 8 years down the road.
Threadstarter, why not buy a really low-priced guitar for like a hundred bucks and write with that while saving up for a kit? If you really want to buy/play drums, then there's no need to dish out $200+ for a temporary bass guitar.

wait, if you sell your amp and guitar, what do oyu have as an amp for your bass???
i don't have one :upset: when i got my guitar, i had to wait 3 weeks to get an amp for that for xmas
man......i've had enough of ebay looking for drums. but yeah thats a good idea, when i sell my guitar & know the total $ i have, i'll look for a used bass & used amp & save for the drums.
i do want to play drums more, but i also want to play bass & knowing me if i do only get one instrument i'll get bored by the un-diversity of just 1. (if thats even a word)

If you mind people not noticing you, go bass...
I like drums myself. I get to control my own volume moreso than other instruments.
^_^
And, besides, nothing's funner than waking up in the morning and smashing your head into an 18" cymbal! Nothing, I say, NOTHING!

i don't think i'd like how you can't notice the bass in a song unless you really listen to it though :upset: if drums weren't so expensive, this wouldn't be such a hard decision
i think i'll wait to get the drums cause i don't really have good communication with her. i can ask for a bass for xmas or something i guess
the thing is now i don't know what kind of drums to get, cause i don't want this really crappy thing cause it's going to have to last a while, but i can't really afford anything good........but i'm posting that in the drum forums :thumb:
