All I do would be to stick it in the corresponding slot, and it works like magic? without install discs, etc.?

if you have a modern processor, you can consult your manual as to which slots will activate Dual Channel Memory mode

all motherboards will support dual channel memory as long as the Processor can (thats why the SKT 754 Athlons only have 2 - 3 RAM ports while all skt939 Athlon Motherboards i've seen will have 4)

They're designed together, but I'd say motherboard as it is the object that actually holds the RAM.
