billdrum

After 3 tries, I finally got the right bottom hoop for my popcorn snare.

Specs: 12 x 5, 10 ply Keller maple shell, hardware from drummaker.com, all finish work done my moi: Black wood dye, followed by gold sparkle spray, followed by stenciled graphics in antique gold spray, followed by a matte clear poly finish.

I'm not sure if I'm a big fan of the star/moon/sun theme (or at least the kinds of star/moon/sun you have on there), but regardless, that snare looks great. Sound clips?

billdrum
09-12-2005, 02:20 PM
No clips yet. I'll see what I can do.

Can we expect a Bill Drum Company?

While I enjoy doing it, I don't see myself getting that serious. It'll be more of a hobby than anything. Plus, I'd have to come up with a better name! Any suggestions?

No, I have a weird German last name. Although, the first 4 letters are Mach. I could use "Mach1 Drums" or something like that.

Actually, I got the shell from Dave. His shell prices were better. I liked drummakers selection and prices on the hardware though, even though they sent me the wrong snare side hoop 3 times (warehouse mix-up).

Let's face it, my user name is lame, especially compared to some of the creative ones on here. I just didn't think much about when I signed up. I can't imagine using BillDrum as a company name.

Hey Joseph, I was waiting for you to reply! Does the e-mail function work here from my public profile page or has the system disabled that feature?

Edit: just checked, it doesn't work.

Why did it not kick in until JUST now that the "popcorn anyone" refers to the fact that your snare is a popcorn snare?

DAMN I'm dumb.

Hey, it's more original than mine.

Then again, I did register as sheeps (what I go by everywhere else in the interwebular) but no, the mxforum screwed me over. It just .. didn't work.

You'll get sued by GilleteYou could probably get away with Mach1. I think Gillette only uses the Mach name on razors with 3 or more blades. Those bastards actually have a five-bladed razor coming out soon (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9340767/). Unbelievable.

Looks great Bill. Top-notch work :thumb: If I were you I'd definitely keep it instead of possibly selling it. To go through all that work and then just hand over the fruit of your labor to someone else just sounds kind of pointless to me...especially when your drum looks as good as it does, but I guess if the price is right :naughty:

billdrum
11-01-2005, 08:29 PM
I've pretty much decided to keep it. I have a brass shell coming for my next project. I'll sell that one when it's done.

hey bill the drum looks great, nice job

how did the drilling go?

what steps did you take for the finish, sanding? how many coats of what?

billdrum
11-03-2005, 05:46 PM
You have to be very precise with the drilling, especially using separate lugs on each side as I did (instead of double ended ones) because you want them to line up exactly right. I did a template on postal paper and attached it to the drum with my markings for the final drilling.

Finish: First, a black wood dye, which lets the woodgrain show through. Then I lightly sprayed gold glitter over the top of that for a sparkle effect (hard to see in pics). Then I did the stencils with a gold spray. Finally, several coats of a spray poly clearcoat. I thought it would be glossier than it was. Next time I'm going to try a clear gloss automotive spray. I used 0000 steel wool between coats.
