i'm doing my best to defend them but they're making it really fu'cking hard. I know what you mean teeb, but the music still suggests these values exist, they're just going about it in a different way?
I recognize that their ideals still exist to some extent, but i would say they're actions still suggest they value money more.

They were on the hills on MTV. They have officially been denied as a band with any morals or ideals

my questions is, how much of this is them and how much is the record label. some would say that they should just quit, but they cant, unless they want to get slapped with a lawsuit.

On the contrary couldnt they royally eff up and have the company break the contract if I remember right.

It's astonishing that people are still so disappointed in the band. This isn't really a further deterioration of their former ideals, this is just pretty much the same sort of stuff that they've been up to for the last two records. Their music is played in American Eagle. They opened for Green Day. They are probably in Alternative Press and Rolling Stone. They have made it clear that they don't stand for the same things they used to. I could understand being upset about it two years ago, but really, I'm sure there are more deserving whipping boys...
I'm just miffed because I liked their old music better, but as for the people, I have no reason to believe that they were or weren't lying in the first place. They really have no responsibility to any of us.

It is really silly to invest a lot of yourself in any musical act.
Having a strong opinion of Against Me! feels like a punk rock fashion trend to me.

Against Me's first two albums, and concurrent EPs, are ****ing great.
The last two albums have been ****.
I don't like them now because the music is boring, and they lost the lo-fi, raw, passionate sound which made them distinctive to me (at the time) within punk music. I don't care that they sold out, they're still great live and Warren has some excellent facial hair. HOWEVER, this band is done making good music. Time to stop flogging a dead horse. Move on. Find better music. When I am 50 I might put on Reinventing Axl Rose and reminisce about how much I loved this band when I was 15. About getting drunk and seeing them the night before my HIGHER MATHS EXAM. I was that punk rock.
I'm just surprised to see people still spewing the same **** about this band. How much can you say about them? If you like the music just enjoy it and stop bitching. Have some dip.

People are seriously still talking about this? People have been bitching about AM! selling out since ATEC. It's getting really old. Yeah, it'd be nice if they were still like they used to be but they aren't. Let em be what they want to be and leave em the f'uck alone.

That was the poorest excuse for a defense I've heard. Just because a band's music "suggests" something doesn't mean they truly believe in what they're saying.

Pretty sure Daniel J. Travanti from The Briefs said it best when he said that signing to a major record label and taking as much money from them as possible is a much more punk thing to do than to just bitch about them.

Yeah like when people say Rage was on a major but it was ok because they took their money and gave it to radical groups, it doesn't change the fact that they made Sony and it's corporate family like 500 times more than they recieved.

Tom gabel seems like a douche in this new interview:
The argument the punk scene is making about mainstream culture is totally irrelevant now -- technology is changing everything, and they're still talking about $5 shows and seven-inch records. . We wanted the album to be polarizing, we wanted it to break us out of being stuck as just a punk band, but it's taking some time.

No, not really. And when did I mention anything about them not being "punk" enough? I said that their ideals have changed, not that they stopped being "punk."
And that theory doesn't even make sense because they're not taking money from their major lable. They're making money for it.
If you told me all of this when I was 15 I never would have believed it.

I saw Against Me! in Oslo about two months ago, together with Future of the Left (which was really cool!) and Steriogram (Which wasn't good at all). Against Me! was really great guys, we hooked up and they put me and some friends on the guestlist because the show was sold out, and we got to talk a bit, they seemed really honest and down to earth, no rockstar to spot there. And the show was cool, mostly New Wave songs, 3-4 songs of Reinventing Axl Rose and some Searching For A Former Clarity, but the bumper at the show was a real asshole. Wish I got to see them on the tour with Sage Francis.

I don't like Sage Frances, but what does his background have to do with not thinking he's legit? If he were presenting himself as a gangsta it'd be one thing, but he doesn't. I think rap stopped being an artform restricted to Blacks or people from the ghetto a long time ago.

And the label would probably make more money from the band than the band would from the label.
This argument (that supporting a major label either by buying their product or being a band on their roster is a punishable offense) is fine, unless you shop at any chain "box store" (Wal-Mart, etc), ever buy gasoline, eat industrialized meat, etc etc etc, in which case the argument is nullified. We forget how many huge, immensely evil corporate powers there are, and how much we really contribute to them simply by living a normal, consumer-driven life. The "Music Industry" is horrible, definitely, and they really don't deserve any more money, but there are a lot more bigger, meaner bullies in the world that I'm worried about.

Sure there are worse things out there, but that's not what we're talking about. We're talking about the music industry and major labels, which makes the other things you mentioned irrelevant.
Also, there's only so much in the corporate world that one can avoid. Obviously you can choose not to shop at Wal-Mart but there's really no getting around buying gas from a corporate bully.
AndreTheHyena
01-04-2008, 02:42 AM
That's kind of my point. People make such a huge deal about a band signing to a major, when those people themselves (a generalization though this may be) take no real measures to avoid corporate allegiance or no real steps towards true "independence". You can't draw such a hypocritical line and vehemently accuse a band of "selling out", but then not apply those same ethics to the very life you lead, which is exactly what so many naysayers are doing.
(The "you's" in that paragraph are not referring to anyone in particular, so don't no one get all pissy).
Henrik
01-04-2008, 05:55 AM
I see your point, but I just don't think that people should stop the hating on major labels just because there are even worse companys out there.
Of course, as long as our society runs like it does today, there are alot of (evil) corporations that we are kind of forced to support eg. gasoline. But that doesn't mean that we shouldn't avoid supporting them when we get the chance.
Personally I don't shop too much in the huge supermarkets (which I'm assuming that Wal-mart is, never been there), and I try not to buy products from coca-cola mcdonalds and stuff like that.
I'm still a consumer and I definitely support bad things, but I try my best to keep it low.

He said that no one got their head smashed into a counter, all that happened was that a drink got knocked over. And then he went on to make a joke about how they were pissed off at him, meanwhile they're a bunch of anarchists who "ran to the cops at the first sign of trouble"
They also talked about how Andrew said he was going to beat the **** out of the guy who said he got his head smashed at the coffee shop. I don't know about you, but I would not want to **** with Andrew.
They mention some stories about how they all met each other, and how they all wound up in Gainesville and such. Line up changes and having to record RAR a full second time. There's also an interview with Matt Flood (of BtMI!'s Asbestos Records) about his extensive Against Me! vinyl collection.

You have to win tickets from this really lame radio station here to get in, and to do that would require me to not go to school for about a month, and go in and play a game against the host and win in order to score 2 tickets; which according to the site are worth $100 each. This is bullpoop.
Damn, that does suck.

I'm not talking about you Cliche, you weren't being a dick at all. You made a point, all of their records are like that. But I meant by switching up their sound between records frequently. They're going to stick with this rock sound for a while, and I meant that it would be healthy for them to go for kind of a record reaching back to their roots soon, or go for an ATEC sound again to keep them interesting.
I know that all their albums are different. I just worded my first statement poorly.

I agree on that one. It would be really interesting to hear a new acoustic cd. i know it wouldn't be like the acoustic ep, but I still got a feeling it would sound better than their most recent electric stuff.
other than that the only new Against Me! release that would make me really interested in the band again would be a total reinventing of their style or eventually a b-side record.

Ill be honest, I actually like New Wave a little better than I liked Searching (and I hated Searching).
Whilst in my opinion its still a very very average rock album, it does contain a few parts that seem to shine through the rough (Thrash Unreal/Borne On The FM Waves). Even if every other song was great though, the entire thing is always going to be ruined by the song Stop (....what were they thinking?!)
I don't want to admit that I occasionally get Thrash Unreal stuck in my head and need to listen to it.

Against Me! have realized that there's only so many ways they can get old fans to give them money.

I'll buy it just for the hell of it/for the collection aspect. I realized recently that I really like New Wave and SFAFC, albeit for reasons different than those for which I like RAR and Crime etc.

Don't feel bad if you don't.
I never really got into them, personally.
Just don't go to Gainesville expecting sympathy.

"We told Warren this afternoon that we are going to look for a new drummer. Andrew, James and I made the decision a couple days ago over lunch. I told them that I didn’t want to play music with Warren anymore. They both agreed that this was a necessary step, it’s been a long time coming. Warren’s heart hasn’t been in this for a while now."
Sounds like a meeting of the popular girls in middle school. In reality, Warren's heart isn't in it because he wants to play good music.

Exactly Joe. Warren decided he didn't want to play shitty pop music anymore. He realized that when Tom does that stupid deep voiced singing thing it should be a scream.

For real. They posted a thing on myspace saying Warren decided to leave the band and totally wanted to do it himself because he's opening a Mexican restaurant called Boca Fiesta in Gainesville.

Man, I'll be buying this just 'cause but it isn't really worth having. It's just shittier versions of the songs. Except Cavalier Eternal which is exactly the same.

Did you listen already? I was hoping it would be at least as good as the album versions. Bleh.

Yeah. I didn't think they were as good, which makes sense being that they're demos. I'm not really sure why they're releasing this.
