My friend asked me the other day to burn him a cd of Against Me!'s best stuff.

So I burned a bunch of the old stuff (basically anything pre-SFAFC, plus the singles from New Wave at his request), and he told me he couldn't stand any of it. So now he just wants me to burn him New Wave.

:( /is disappointed in friend.

dude how'd you get home so fast? we got stuck behind a cop and two city trucks doing like 20k down the 404 to take down construction signs, they had the whole highway blocked off behind them, it made me angrier than anything ever.

the redeeming factor is the show was pretty f'ucking awesome. took them forever to start cause the stupid techy couldn't make toms equipment work and fiddled for like a half hour then they came out and it still didn't work, tom spent like 30 seconds on it and bang. lesson learned? set your own **** up...

also for some anarchists who hope 'their songs never make on fu'cking dollar' they had a reaaaally nice tour bus and all brand new equipment.

no acoustics, mostly new stuff but it was way better live than the album versions of everything, glad i went etc etc would go again.

tom79
10-02-2007, 06:25 AM
Yeah it did take forever for them to start. I was expecting a lot of New Wave but it sounds a lot better live than on record so its okay. Only thing that would have been better is if they maybe played a different song other than Borne on the FM Waves but right after it they kicked into Reinventing so it was all good.

Cliche
10-02-2007, 07:06 AM

Why have American Steel and Against Me's LPs progressed in such similar ways.

Rough likable debut LP --> More refined but still rough and awesome sophomore --> Overproduced and influenced by weird genres like reggae and other stuff third LP --> 'major label' type debut which is super over produced but still has good songs

Why do all good bands progress in such similar ways.

Rough likable debut LP --> More refined but still rough and awesome sophomore --> Overproduced and influenced by weird genres like reggae and other stuff third LP --> 'major label' type debut which is super over produced but still has good songs

if this is what you meant, it means they get better at what they do - songwriting and playing. in doing so, they build a fan base through the first few, somebody on top see's this and decides they can make money on them. it seems to be the way of pretty much of every band.

I saw them for free last weekend and while they were good, the setlist kind of sucked. One song off of Reinventing Axl Rose and three or so songs off As the Eternal Cowboy. The new stuff does sound a lot better live than on recording though.

That sucks for you, because when they played in Toronto they played Pints on Guinness, Walking is Still Honest, Baby, I'm an Anarchist, Rice and Bread, TSR, and Sink Florida Sink. Plus probably a couple from from ATEC that I can't remember. Only about 4 or 5 songs were from New Wave.

yesterday in utrecht (holland) they played a very good setlist:
pints of guinness, cliche, axl rose, rice and bread, sink florida sink
unprotected sex, from her lips, problems, don't loose thouch
and a couple of new wave songs, it sounds alot better live than on cd though

after the encore they played TSR, walking is still honest and baby i'm an anarchist

the reaction of the crowd to the old songs was much better including myself, i guess thats why they played some old songs at the end

it was great

he says they kinda knew it would happen but didn't really care. the music is still good, just in a different context. there is only like what, one girl song on new wave? he's still challenging the process and things, its still rebellious just not on the same scale as it was before. Anyone who cares to listen can pretty much get the whole story from their music, 'unprotected sex with multiple partners' basically says why they switched to a major label and to me kind of hints at an intent to revert back to their old selves when its all over, this is just so that they can indeed go on making music. I dont know if you anyone here has ever been in a touring band but i can only imagine how tough it is to make **** meet, especially playing in 'churches and laundromats'. i feel its kinda justified as long as it stays credible, intelligent and continues to question things.

I saw Against Me! last night. It was actually really really good. Only thing I didn't really enjoy was when they played "The Ocean". That song is not really good and it is very boring during a great fast live show to listen to such a song.

We Laugh At Danger (And Break All The Rules) at the end was amazing. Plus they played TSR which is one of my favorites.

I got to talk to both Andrew and Warren after the show, and they seemed pretty nice.

As far as I can recall they played Pint Og Guinness, Walking Is Still Honest and We Laugh At Danger as the only RAR songs.

False. I consider myself an anarchist to an extent, and I still vote. My own personal policies would not benefit the nation as a whole, so I don't mind voting for a "lesser of two evils" candidate with the idea of benefitting the greater good, most of whom will never know, understand, or care for the independent ideologies that I espouse.

The concert in Vienna was epic.

The set list was awesome. They played 7 or 8 old songs.

The cool part though, was that my friend and I met Andrew before their set. We talked with him a bit and told him how we were on a study abroad foreign exchange program. We just continued our small talk and about an hour later they came on stage to play. About 5 songs in they started playing Americans Abroad and I was up front right at the middle of the stage. When it got to the "We're Americans abroad! We're Americans abroad!" part Andrew smiled and pointed at me and my friend and gave us a wink.

Pretty f'ucking sweet.

fairly average one actually, one of the other high schools (they are the REALLY REALLY rich one) puts on a festival once a year, with 3 stages and a bunch of local bands.

NAHS hosts it and they have free food and bands come in a play and stuff. normally its a lot of metal/hardcore, but this one band has played for 6 years straight, and so they made it "unplugged"

When I went to see them open for the Subhumans in Detroit they had plenty of fans and it was great. However, I seem to be the only fan of them in Grand Rapids (which they'll be playing for the first time at in a couple of weeks), as well as other places in West Michigan.

They're getting quite a bit of radio play on my college's station right now, though. I reviewed their newest CD for the variety DJs. So maybe that'll change in this area.

They did play Pints..., cliche..., sink florida sink, rice and bread, and i think beyond that it was pretty much the last two albums, much of which I don't know song titles. As expected they ended with Ocean. While they were playing it some girl at the front was shouting out another song and they almost stopped playing. Pop's is definitely not in "East St. Louis" in the ghetto sense of the word. It's in Illinois (in an industrial district, I believe). But it is East of St. Louis proper. As a new arrival, I won't judge you too harshly.

Yeah, you just don't go to East St. Louis. It's ridiculously dangerous. For a while, St. Louis was towards the top of all of those great lists; "Lowest Quality of Living", "Dirtiest", "Most Dangerous". Probably still is.

They played stadiums before this tour.

But honestly how can you lose respect for them because they want to do this? There's a lot of money in it for them, and I'm sure that's very appealing when you can go from getting your tires slashed by fans for signing to an independent label to not having to worry about your financial well being for the rest of your life.

Yeah, but it's the fact that their ideals and motives have changed from what they used to be that makes stuff like this disappointing.

Yeah, they can make their own decisions, but it's just hard to listen and see them now knowing how they used to be before they started branching out.

I still love New Wave. And a friend who saw them on their tour with Sage Frances said they still "got it". I dunno, I really don't care about their success. Good for them. It's been said again and again, but if I could get paid enough to support myself and my family (I supremely doubt they're millionaires) by just doing what I love, I'd jump at the chance.

It's almost amusing how they are consistently moving farther and farther from their roots. With every step I seem to find myself thinking "at least they're not doing X," only to find out a month later that they are.

Also, no one here has really gone to this degree, but I despise the "well do you want them to flip burgers for the rest of their lives?" mentality that a lot of people seem to have. It's as if the only option that any band has is to sign to a major or barely scrape by while working 2 jobs. That's bullshit. On We're Never Going Home, Tom says something along the lines of "We're in a position where we're actually being offered a million dollars to make a record." That entire DVD seemed to say that although their were plenty of advantages and luxuries to signing to a major, it certainly wasn't something they needed to do.

I'm not going to walk around town waving "new againt me! sucks" signs, no one is forcing me to listen to anything new they put out, and I don't listen to the radio, so I won't hear them on it. The Against Me! that I love no longer exists, and I've accepted that. It does, however, annoy the **** out of me when people say that the route they're on now was really their only choice.

If they play at the Triple Rock in Minneapolis I'll see them again. That would be so unenjoyable to pay almost 50 dollars to see them open for the Foo Fighters in a huge stadium.

Didn't Jawbreaker tour with the Foo Fighters and sign to a major label?

I've read several interviews with AM! where they cited the Replacements as an influence, and the Replacements were a flagship band for the whole "signing to a major, milkin' 'em for all its worth, and still doing whatever the **** you want" practice. If AM! models their major label career after artists like that, or Neil Young or Wilco or any other major label act that still acts like an indie act....I don't know how I planned on ending that sentence. But you know what I mean.

This argument is so stupid. No one's mind is ever going to be changed. **** the sell-outs, and **** the accusers.

Hah, I love how this is one of the first threads I see when I come back into the punk forum(its been a while since I last posted)...They never used to get this much attention here but whatever...and just to be correct here they even covered a Replacements song on a tribute album, they still have played fairly small venues in tampa (except they just played NEXT BIG THING 7 Google it!) whate3ver

no it wasn't their only choice to sign, but it was definately in their best interests as a band and like andrew said, it doesn't matter f'uck all as long as they keep making good music.

I can see how it was in their best interest to sign. I guess it all comes down to what they value more; money or ideals. Their early work suggested that it was ideals, but their later actions clearly show that it is money. This is where the dissapointment stems from.
