I just saw Against Me! last night and it was an awesome show. I came home covered in sweat from singing and moshing with everyone. The best part was the encore when they played Baby I'm an Anarchist and We Laugh at Danger and Break All the Rules and everyone went crazy and sang every word. It was probably the best concert I've ever been to.
I thought they had skipped Baby I'm An Anarchist from their setlist?
They didn't play it when I saw them, but I really hope theu will next time in october.

HAHAH! I had heard that a picture like that existed somewhere on the old AM! boards. Warren and Andrew are definitely the only members who I will respect, and pretty much love, no matter what. They should be total badasses and make their own band.

hmm. well i just got the new album and i havent posted on here in a long time so i came looking for this thread figuring it would be up front.
i really liked white people for peace and thought the album would be just as politically charged as that song, but i still liked most of the songs. up the cuts and stop! are probably my favorite songs in the album. wish i could see them but the closest they come to me is gainesville tonight in north florida and i live down in miami. i know a few people making the trip but i start school in two days so i cant.

It's not that I don't like him, he just doesn't seem as rad as Warren or Andrew. Or have as much facial hair.
When I saw them live for the first time, Andrew was all over the place before the show, and me and my friends got to talk to him for a while. Then we spoke with Warren after the show, while James just kinda hid in the back. He also doesn't do much speaking in interviews.
Also, Jesus Christ, what's with all the people from Miami in this thread?
rancid22
08-19-2007, 05:52 PM
hah. sorry i didnt notice. i never have seen many people here from miami but i am usually in the guitar forum. i used to post in the punk forums many moons ago but moved to the guitar ones. has been nearly a year since i came on.
and i just went back a few pages and read the article about tom and whatnot. was it a messed up thing to do that completely contradicts many of the beliefs of his songs? yes. but i cant say that i hate the guy for it or anything. i also am against violence and stuff but i think it would be easy for me to lose my cool and just want to hurt someone. but it doesnt seem like the guy did much provoking at all. maybe gable just has no patience. still a very upsetting story to read.

I find James almost annoying to hear at times. He takes over so many vocal parts that Tom sings in the recorded versions of songs. He'll sing like the whole entire second half of Those Anarcho Punks and You Look Like I Need a Drink

yea. last show i went to was the one in revolution in ft. lauderdale just to catch streetlight manifesto. didnt have tickets but i stood outside for a little bit and some guy gave me his ticket for free. i got rained on like crazy but it was worth every penny i didnt pay. probably the best show i have ever been to just because i love streetlight.
before that i went to warped tour, which was a waste of money considering i left before bad religion played. and then i went to the casualties in downtown because my friend thought it would be interesting to watch them. also a waste of money. i hated all the bands that played, and the crowd sucked.

alot of kids where i live hate this band. one of the local bands around here slashed the tiers on against me!'s van. well thats how the story goes in a nut shell. and at one of the shows they were playing "baby im and anarchist" and everyone in the crowd would give them the finger.
i guess its because of when they were supposed to play with world/inferno at cbgb they filled the club with major label executives and left about 400 kids outside and unable to go to the show. they were supposed to sell tickets at the door but the day of were filled. unless you had ordered a ticket online, which cbgb lied about and didnt not put this online until the day of, you were not allowed in.
****ing sellouts. they still rule though. the new album isnt as bad as everyone made it out to be.

i love searching for a former clarity. i think a lot of people dont like it because a lot of the songs deal with them signing to a major label and how many fans are going to hate them. the most direct song being "unprotected songs with multiple partners". personally i dont understand why so many songs dealt with that if they were still on fat wreck. idk. but even those songs, IMO, have some of the best lyrics any bands are writing.

A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the new "Against Me!" album "New Wave". I didnt really know too much about this band but had been reading lots of good things about it, and my friend Tegan sings on it. I like to keep myself up to date with whats going on musically in the world, so I checked it out. I fell in love with the album. Really. Like, couldn't stop listening to it. As heavy and gnarly as it sounds at times, it is unmistakably a pop masterpiece. Listening to it on the way to Australia, I wondered to myself how these songs would sound acoustically.
A couple of days later I was on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne and had the thought "I'd love to cover this album." The whole thing. Beginning to end. So I did.
Anyway, here are the results. If you already know the original album, I hope these recordings shed a different light on it. If you don't know "Against Me!" and like what you hear, go check them out.
Nic Johns is the unspoken hero of this tale. He recorded, produced and mixed it and basically made my dream a reality. Hats off to him.
Hope you guys dig it.
Enjoy!

I think Searching For A Former Clarity is up there with the rest of their albums, it has a different sound but I still think the songs are written really well and sound awesome. My favorites from there are Miami, Unprotected Secks With Multiple Partners, From Her Lips to God's Ears (The Energizer), Joy, Holy Sh*t, Don't Lose Touch, and Searching For A Former Clarity is great because the whole song is a metaphor, like Unprotected Secks With Multiple Partners. I think it's better than New Wave but there's only about 3 songs on New Wave that I dislike so it's pretty good too. I can't stand that people only hate New Wave cus it's on a major label, there's still great music on it.

I found that most of the songs on SFAFC we're by far the weakest lyrically of all their albums. Only Joy stands out for me. Listen to Untitled on the Acoustic EP.
People don't like New Wave just because it's on a major label. I'd still like Against Me! if they were on Sire and wrote albums like ATEC and RAR or their EP's. New Wave is good when looked at aside from their earlier work, sure, but Compared to RAR, ATEC, Crime, and Acoustic, It lacks passion and the folk style they used to have.

they're just a band, i don't know why people take everything they do so personally. besides, between tom and warren they have probably done more activism than most people ever will - warren was involved in the opening of 2 infoshops before he was even 19! not to mention all the florida radical activist network work and food not bombs and immokalle farm worker support and youth liberation camps and diy camps and theatre of the oppressed and blah blah blah... and zines and multiple bands and of course, "why freegan". and they're nice as hell and sincere people and you seriously have to have a sense of humor about what they do - i mean warren went train hopping and came back with a homemade 'youth gone wild' tattoo. they're silly! and they don't come from privileged backgrounds, they have worked incredibly hard and played and toured like crazy and it's pretty crappy to get pissed at them for accepting more money for what they're doing. it's ****ing great to see such nice people doing so well...
the first time i heard them play it was in the ocala forest for a may day gathering and it was just tom and kevin, playing on buckets and it was amazing... their shows are still as good as they were then, they're just different. if you don't like change then you're not really punks anyway.

Allright. I just took a look at your favorites on youtube. Damn that Erik Petersen performance looks awesome!
If you don't mind a really long video, the end of this has two (all the battery left on my friend's camera) Erik Petersen songs on it. This was the "Skunkape Circus Tour" that came to my friend's house and a bunch of really cool folk musicians played in his basement. Johnny Hobo, his little brother, Erik, and more.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6773228571081908778&q=skunkape+pottstown&total=1&start=0&num=10&so=0&type=search&plindex=0
Yeah, I noticed that tattoo looked a lot like the cover art. It's a cool cover, not so cool album, and a kind of lame tattoo.

they're just a band, i don't know why people take everything they do so personally. besides, between tom and warren they have probably done more activism than most people ever will - warren was involved in the opening of 2 infoshops before he was even 19! not to mention all the florida radical activist network work and food not bombs and immokalle farm worker support and youth liberation camps and diy camps and theatre of the oppressed and blah blah blah... and zines and multiple bands and of course, "why freegan". and they're nice as hell and sincere people and you seriously have to have a sense of humor about what they do - i mean warren went train hopping and came back with a homemade 'youth gone wild' tattoo. they're silly! and they don't come from privileged backgrounds, they have worked incredibly hard and played and toured like crazy and it's pretty crappy to get pissed at them for accepting more money for what they're doing. it's ****ing great to see such nice people doing so well...
the first time i heard them play it was in the ocala forest for a may day gathering and it was just tom and kevin, playing on buckets and it was amazing... their shows are still as good as they were then, they're just different. if you don't like change then you're not really punks anyway.
But you're missing the point. The new album blows. Hard.

I think Stop is kind of awesome for the kitsch factor. I go back and forth on this one though.

Lyric tattoos I've considered:
"There's a joy in all I can see" (AM!, of course)
"Both feet on the floor, two hands on the wheel, may the wind take your troubles away" (Son Volt)
"I see a darkness" (Bonnie 'Prince' Billy)

The oldest song I've seen them play live was Tonight We're Gonna Give It 35% at the Triplerock in Minneapolis. Everyone went f'ucking crazy when they started playing that as an encore. That was easily the best show I've ever been to because Tom was actually screaming instead of singing with a deep raspy voice that he's been doing a lot lately.
I'm going to see them in October I think. I'm on a foreign study abroad program in Austria now and thought that I wouldn't get to see any of the bands I like that were going on fall tours. Against Me! are coming to Vienna in October, so I'm pretty pumped. Hopefully I can go.

Well s'hit, I'm totally wrong then. I thought The Disco Before The Breakdown was a year older or so...It's still a song they don't play very often at least...
My logic was very very off in that post about the oldest song I've seen... I realised that RAR, Those anarcho Punks, Walking is still honest, and I Still Love You Julie are all on the Acoustic EP or Crime EP. Tonight We're Gonna Give It 35% is just a great song that they don't play very often and that just popped into my head when I wrote before.

Okay jess, John Tard has put BTMI! on the bill for September 22nd at the Kathedral. Their playing with FCO and 3Tards and I assume some other local talent.
Actually, here's the flyer:

Their live show is nowhere near as disappointing as their studio albums. Not going to see them would be a shame.

Alright, that's cool too. I just figured it would make everything easier having them playing a bigger show and whatnot.
But dammit, that means I need to find someone to go, because Kyle for some reason would rather see 3Tards...

2nd to last time I saw them they played Impact and Disco Before the Breakdown, it was ****ing epic.
Last time I saw them they played that as one song for the encore, and it was great. Probaby the highlight of the show (as the show had just a bit too many new songs)

i saw them play impact as an encore like just after sfafc came out.

I'm thinking mint due to the white-ish splotches on it.
I think swamp green is darker, hold on and let me see if any of my No Idea Records match either colours
edit: nah, I only have dark green.
How many shades could they possibly have?

The Acoustic Ep came out in 2001 originally, but that was only as a 7' with the first 4 songs on it.
Later in 2003 they reissued it as cd and then they put the last two songs on it. i don't know if the last two songs were recorded in 2001 or 2003 though.
RAR came out in 2002.
As did The Disco Before The Breakdown which I've been completely in love with for the last two months.
