Reinventing Axl Rose, I Still Love You Julie, and Turn Those Clapping Hands too. There's also short covers of Billy Idol's Dancing With Myself, Creedence Clearwater Survival's Lodi, and some Pink Floyd cover. Billy Idol is Tom and their old drummer kevin. The rest are just Tom in the van with an acoustic guitar.

That scene with Tom and Kevin at some guy's house is awesome. I thought it was cool that James Bowman was in the crowd. Or was that at some other show? He was in the crowd at one of 'em.

The new live album is kicking my *** so hard. It's so good that it makes me like Searching For A Former Clarity a little bit, because I understand how the songs fit in with the bands' music as a whole.

I've been listening to a lot Against Me! as of late, i'm just in love with them after seeing them over the summer. I know they sold out, but i think there's no band that has the same passion as them. But anyway, i was thinking, a lot of the sets they've played lately have had the same dull setlist (Don't Lose Touch, Problems etc.) Does anyone else think they need to start spicing them up a bit more, you know, wheel out the big guns.
Anyone agree?

i really dont get the selling out thing. it is kinda beyond me how this forums seems to go into these fads and when one bnd goes out of the same routine they get looked down upon. like i mean a small chnge isnt all that bad. besides Bad Religion went on to a major label for a while just to reach more people with there music.

New Against Me! doesn't suck, it just isn't as good as their old stuff. I think Even Out Our Worst We're Still Better Than Most is the best track off ...Clarity.
Henrik

Okay I will agree with you there...
New Against Me! doesn't suck (I fear that the upcomming album will) but in comparison with the older stuff, it is terrible.
The ironic title "Even at our worst we're still better than most" kind of explains it all.

I disagree. Last time i saw them, their setlist was terrible, and their show was miserable.
I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, though, and say it's probably because it was one of the last dates on the warped tour and they were probably wiped by then.

I really dont like the newer Against Me! Its honestly nothing to do with which record label they are on... I just generally cant get into their newer sound.
I personally feel on Clarity that his voice sounded pretty dumb (And I used to think he had a great voice) Its just too much of a big rock album, and im not really into that. I fear the new album is going to be even more like that.. which is a bummer really.
What I cant understand is this. They sort of pioneered this whole Folk/Punk sound, which was great. They were considered a fresh innovative band, and then they decided to go a totally different direction (Which is fine) However it wasnt like they pushed the boat out further, they kind of went backwards. The music they make now isnt new or exciting.. Its pretty generic. If I was them I would have either carried on with what I was previously doing or done something else new.. but then again im not them... so...
AIRIC
10-29-2006, 10:27 AM
Yeah that makes sense. But that's why their new music is such a big dissapointment. Becasue it's so god damn generic.

I think I've had an overdose of Against Me!
When I saw them in person, at a small club and I hugged there drummer.
It was kind of like, "well this is as far as this band is going to get in my heart"
Because, to me. When you listen to an album, you think "I'd love to see them" and then when you do "Man I've to meet them" and then you do. It's kind of like now what?
I still love Crime, but I don't listen to Against Me! anymore, and it's hard to for some reason.

the waynes world joke wasnt funny. they totally avoided answering a sincere question. fans want a reason why AM! decided to sign to sire, not a lame joke. a lot of fans were hoping AM! could be the saviors of punk music, and are taking the sire deal very hard.
Im still gonna buy the new album, b/c maybe this will turn out to be a good thing. i mean, the Clash signing to CBS was considered selling out, but look what we wouldnt have if they hadnt?

hey, jackass, i just said i still like them, and i will be buying the new cd, and will be going to lots of future shows, i just wish they didnt dance around what, to a lot of people, is a serious issue. i dont care when bands sign to major labels, its their choice, but it would be nice if they offered some closure. it just hurts worse with against me! than it did with, say, Green Day or Bad Religion, because of AM!'s association with Anarchy and Anti-establishment.

Hey i can tell you right now why they did it.
A) Money
B) Exposure
It is either one of them, or both. Like every other band that has ever signed to a label bigger than the one they were on. If you couldn't tell that by their last album they they we're going for more radio-friendly sounds then you're retarded. Its been 8 years since Vida Vis and they've progressed with their music, as people, and apperantally as buisnessmen. People change, bands change, and they don't have the same ethics as they did when writing RAR as they do now. You can tell that from album to album.

Yeah, but when you've written songs that sing 'MTV **** you' or an entire song that's devoted to an ideal scene, then go back on those statements especially when they seem so sincere and honest, it's easy to see why people are upset.
In RAR it says 'honesty and emotion are not looked down on here', so why doesn't AM! just be honest about why they signed to Sire.

Against Me! signing to a major label affects my everyday life.
I wouldn't be surprised if it does to certain people. Against Me! meant something. Now they mean nothing. It's a huge let down and a real shame.
Though I think the video was very classy, the fans deserve a straight forward answer for why they did this.
I respect it because I think they're smart enough guys to realize that they would be missing out if they didn't do this. But still, it's a huge let down. They kept it real and this is so not real.

Agaisnt Me! meant something to me because of what their music meant to me, not their business practices. I can still listen to Tonight We'll Give It 35% and other assorted songs that almost make me ****in' cry bevcause they affect me so much, but because they were on an independent label doesn't matter to me.
People should give Tom some room, we can't expect him to cater to our dreams forever. I'm glad Gainst Me! have gone on to a major label. They probably won't reach big time Fall Out Boy sucess (major labels have lots of 'failed' projects), but they deserve the money and newly found ease of life.

None of you who say that their music meant so much to you even bothered to read the lyrics on the entire searching for a former clarity album and the b sides that i know you all have downloaded (ie exaustion). It pretty much clearly states their intentions, if you hadn't been so caught up in your own politics you would have noticed.
Oh, I guess I've never done any of those things OR even bought one Against Me! album. Is is copy of SFAFC and RAR just stone chiseled replicas then?

I agree with that but my deal is that these guys were the real deal. The thing about their music is that it was 100% honest and reflected their life 100%. That is very hard to come by.
They still do to some extent.
I mean I can still listen to Crime or RAR and be influenced or politically charged because I can somewhat sense their emotions.
"I want to change the world and have a fun time doing it"
And I'm sure the music now will express how they feel now, today.
Time changes everyone.

He went to Yale but also take into consideration that his father was a rich politician who was running for Senator at the time and also went to Yale.
When being a political public figure (I say political because this doesn't really apply to, say, sports figures) it really helps to be able to adress the public in a clear, concise way.
That being said, it doesn't completely reflect his presidency. I'm sure many of you disagree with what Ronald Reagan did (if you were even alive then, which, I myself was not), and yet he's considered one of the greatest speakers of our time. Just because he is clear and concise and really knew how to talk to the people, did not mean he was a good president.
So yeah, I don't really rag on the president, speech or otherwise, very often either.
Did any of you see that clip of President Bush playing a xylophone-esque instrument when he went to Viet Nam recently? Man, he did a pretty damn good job.
I say we focus on the musical talents of our Politicians, and the political message of our musicians.

Okay, the the movie Wayne's World, two people have a small local access late ngiht rock show that they film and produce in their basement. A large cable company offers to buy it from them, but only if they change a bunch of the features to a more palatable mass media format. THen they proceed to tell the guy that They won't sell out and stuff. Against Me! used the lines from that scene, and the exact same products and camera angles and poses and basically re filmed that entire scene in their backyard. It's a reference to that scene. Has anyone transcribed the lyrics to Untitled 2? I transcribed most of them, but I was wondering if anyone figured them all out. So far I have:
No it doesn't hurt
Everything just is and that's how it's gonna be
There was a part of you born at fifteen, now it's dead at twenty
.... with the people we used to be
You know we never needed high school
Together we we were greater than ...
We'd say **** you
I don't need anything you have to offer
As long as we have each other
...unstoppable
Now we've made these choices together
I've got the bad tattoos to prove it
Scarred into my arms
These are the stakes this is the score
... of victory
The story of how we grew apart
Now I, I'd take a bullet, I'd spend the night in jail
... leaving the town tonight
...
I'm so sorry, if I could change anything
I'd bring us back here again
But I know I'm not coming back here again.

No it
Doesn't hurt,
Everything just is and that's just how it's gunna be.
There was a party born at 15,
Now it's dead at 20,
Gone with all those friends,
Gone with the people we used to be.
You know we
Never needed highschool,
Together we agreed that when asked,
We'd say "**** you, I don't need anything you have to offer,
As long as we have eachother."
(Felt like we were unstoppable)
Now we've
Made these choices together
Got the bad tatooes to prove it
Shot into my arms these are mistakes
This is the scar
And these are the stories of victory
The story of how we grew apart
Now I
I'd take a bullet
Or I'd spend the night in jail
(Quitting a job
Leaving the town tonight)
But still I'd say I'm so sorry
and if I could change anything
I'd bring us back here again
I know we're not comin' back here again

They played White People For Peace, Americans Abroad, two other new songs I think, and one of them might've been Up The Cuts. They also played The Energizer, Don't Lose Touch, and Rice and Bread. Ok so... There's a new album out in like two weeks and had it been two years ago we would already have 20 pages with people discussing how excited they are. Times have changed since then. Who's excited?
I am, well kind of. I don't know what to expect really. Searching For A Former Clarity was a huge letdown, but I must admit I liked a few songs.
So far the only thing I've heard from the new album is that "White People For Peace" song, which didn't impress me too much but at the same time it wasn't as bad as Don't Lose Touch was when it came out as a single.
I'm seeing them 3 days before their new record is out, and I really really hope that they'll play a good set.

The album cover looks like a ferret yawning.

Yeah, it leaked. I'm downloading it now. I'm really expecting to fully hate this album.

Got it. It blows, no one get your hopes up unless you like the idea of the Killers featuring Tom Gabel singing shitty lyrics that are sung to softly.

It's not good. Up the cuts is a decent song until the chorus comes, and Americans Abroad isn't so bad. Piss and Vinegar is okay and that's about the only songs that don't completely suck.

If you know anyone who sells dirty coke tell them to sell it to Tom so he goes into a f'ucking coma for a bit and maybe when he comes out he will write a better ****ing album.
I said I wouldn't download it before it actually came out, but what the hell.

That's a good way of putting it. The music isn't bad, and it's a pretty ok album. It's just not at all aggressive like earlier releases, and not as fun to listen to. Against Me! aren't going to write another Reinventing Axl Rose.

Yeah you know this album sucks because it has poppy choruses and they never did that before even in songs like "We Laugh at Danger" or "Pints of Guiness" or "Cliche Guevara" or hell even "What We Worked For"
God you all ****ing suck.

Just because it has poppy choruses, and some of their previous releases had poppy choruses doesn't make the new songs good.

I think if you come into this thread defending Against Me you're missing the point.

Not necessarily. It's for discussion of the band, which is potentially praise/defense, but lately has been more attacking and criticizing.
