hi im new to these forums so i hope i posted this topic in the right place... ive been trying to play this song for a week now and i love it. the skill level involved in this song is very very high however but i think im motivated enough to learn it...

heres a link to the song im trying to play.. (a rock version of canon in D)

mms://nhnext.hvod.nefficient.co.kr/nhnext/nhnsupport/naverboom/0905_best_JerryC-CR.wmv
(copy and paste that into your address bar)

does anyone have any easy tips to do those fast single-stringed palm mutes (an example of some is at the 1:25 and 3:34 mark)? i find those really tricky to play...

also.. anyone have suggestions as to what level of distortion the amp is set at and WHAT kind of amp it is? i recently blew mine out and looking for a new one.. and the one in the vid sounds decent. btw, this guy in the vid is the best guitar player ive ever seen lol... flawless play, anyone else think so?

thanks for all your help!!

I'll move it.
The main guitar forum deserves to see this, and the threadstarter will probably get more responses in there also.

Yeah, it's true, and serials can be found everywhere.
I've been using it for about a year or 2 now, and I might even buy it because I think it's worth it.
So go for it, you won't regret it.

Note to 90% of MX's wanking shred abusers:

If you're going to shred, thats exactly how to bloody well do it. Noone needs 60 million sweep picked notes in a row, use it sparingly and it sounds pretty fantastic.

YSi scan the net for links to songs etc being uploaded to their suervers that are downloaded. If you change it from tt to xx its no longer a link, and their scanners cant find it.

That was great. I have an mp3 of a rock version of Pachabel's Canon, but it was nothing on that. I am going to set out to learn that after I've done Cliffs of Dover....I'll have to get my sweeping up to scratch though :(

Amp'd
09-10-2005, 03:35 AM
Woa, sweet...

How did you get the opportunity to do that? It's a great piece of music....
Its a school thing all the best musicians from our region get together annually and form an orchestra and do a performance all in one day. it was a really cool experiance but there were too many noobs in the guitar section so only about 4 of us (My friends and i) were the only ones playing the whole time out of sixty guitarists.

Squirrel
09-10-2005, 03:35 AM
Oh ok, fair enough, I've learnt a few of the classical sounding runs just now, pretty fun to play, I can't be bothered to learn the whole piece though :p

Haha, i have that problem.

I get stoked to learn something, then like 10 minutes later at a tough bit i just go " ... .... :(" and put the guitar down.

wait, is it just me or does that song sound not THAT hard? i mean, that was some amazing improvisation he did, and it sounded great and the guy's real talented, but i've heard much harder songs that i'm sure some people on here can play. the majority of the canon solo is just relatively fast lead licks that go along with the backing track, what makes this song any different from the others where people just say *start slow, increase speed slowly?*

i'm not being rhetorical, i'm sure there's a reason. uhhhh what is it?

cmon guys the single-string palm mute part!!! how do you do it???? T____T (look at original post)
I'd pick it using like an 'inside the string' picking technique.
Start off with your pick sitting inbetween the G and D strings. Pick upwards on a palm muted open D string, then pick with a downwards motion on the fretted G string. Then repeat that up-down picking pattern.

There's a great excersise about this in John Petruccis Rock Disipline.

pretty cool video.
guy needs to wear a hat or get a haircut tho! :)
so and so... the piece is hard but not as hard as expressed.
perhaps, some would have troubles with the sweep arps, but if you as a ''sweep picker'' has learned the differant arps that are usual among rock songs, it shouldnt really be difficult as you should be familiar with the shapes(fingerings) and so forth.
some-one mentioned string skipn part think it was iahvntsoldout or something to that effect, but recently i was looking at paul gilberts scarified, and again that has the use of string skip, but you can actually straightforward sweep these if you aint that good at string skipping. just tab the string skipn parts as arps across neighbouring strings. just a tip.
anywayz... nice thread.

p.s. i know alot of ye will be learning this track right now, so best of luck with it. :D

*cries*

this is a real classical piece.. which is sadly butchered.. and the ori version is much tougher than this wankage counterpart..

but good for a few laughs and smile.. a talent show winner for sho..

Sadly butchered? This is far more tasteful than a lot of rubbish that gets published! And 'classical'? Pachelbel was nowhere NEAR classical, try baroque.

I'll also ask again, did this guy do the arrangement?

HondoII
09-16-2005, 03:50 PM
No, you are right I did slow down a tad near the end. Of course I'm not going to lie, that riff is a tad bit hard, especially when connecting to the second part variation (the way he plays it the second time). But yea, It'll be cleaned up soon enough. As for tone, I kinda like it harsh but yea it needs a bit more bass methinkz. (of course I wasn't going for a emmulated tone)

how are you supposed to finger this part
-12--
---14--
-----14--
-------14--
----------12--
with your left hand? i cant barre it fast enough so i have to press each new string down as i go along.. but my fingers get tied up and everything. frustrating..

HondoII
09-16-2005, 04:20 PM
you dont barre it.

It's a sweep. You need to roll your ring finger

-12-- index
---14-- ring
-----14-- ring
-------14-- ring
----------12-- index

sens22
09-16-2005, 04:22 PM
how do you "roll" your ring finger?

HondoII
09-16-2005, 04:25 PM
its hard to explain. But you subdivide the tip of your finger into 3 sections. The first '14' will be hit by the section of your ring finger that is right next to the first crease. The second will be hit by the middle section just above that crease. Lastly the final 14 will be hit by the tip of your ring finger.

doubt that makes sense >_<

When he/people tap like that (the tapping runs)... how do they get it so clean - is it the low action or the pickups or something? If I try that on my guitar, all the other strings start to vibrate pretty bad, and 'cause i'm using both hands, I can't mute anything. So it is the equipment, or just being really careful?

It's all technique. They usually double mute. Meaning they mute with both the fretting and picking hand (or in this case - tapping hand).

i think it's really hard because i'm a relatively inexperienced guitarist. i personally have never heard those artists youve mentioned play (but i have heard OF them) and i dont care... i just admire anyone i happen to come across who plays something that sounds good.

i think it's really hard because i'm a relatively inexperienced guitarist. i personally have never heard those artists youve mentioned play (but i have heard OF them) and i dont care... i just admire anyone i happen to come across who plays something that sounds good.

and back on track, viggus i think im at the same level in learning this song as you are :D. i have no way of recording it tho... and one question, what gauge pick do you use
hi yea i got banned, so this is my new account i use a 3 mill jazz dunlop pick.

Nicely done, even though it doesn't have that back track it still sounds good. Which tab did u use?
the tab thats on here in txt, but its wrong so i had to figure most out myself.

i use a .88 dunlop tortex pick .. but when i try the riff part i always accidentally hit the other strings and the sound gets kinda sloppy. i know i should just practice more, but would a .88 mm pick be okay for this song? or maybe i should switch it for a thicker/thinner pick?
