This thread will probably be closed soon...but...I saw someone ask about inspiration in the community thread and I think this could at least give them ideas. Not only give newbs or people in the midst of a block something to write about, but to see what everyone is interested in.. So I pose the question/s....
"What are your favorite or most common 'themes' or 'ideas' in writing?"
What topic/s do you find yourself most intrigued by, what do you mostly write about?
Personally, I'm in love with the ideas-- Fairy Tales (usually going wrong), The moon, seasons (mostly the changing...)... or if I'm writing about a friend or someone, how I view the relationship, trying to compare it to something else...mostly in metaphor..
those are just a couple things that I mostly write about..
So, what about you guys?

im a heavy metal guitarist so i like pain and sadness.....but i also like love, life experiences, my beliefs on life, sports, and one of my personal favorites is to take inside jokes and put them in my songs so no one knows what the hell im talking about.

I can't say i have a favourite topic. Looking back at the songs on my laptop, i have ones on love, politics, inspiration, friendship, death, reality and god. There's probably more but that's just at a glance.
Sloth, sorry for being unhelpful :upset:

Cheer up, ER. We love you here in the pit... I mean. S&L. Sorry lol.
Anyhow, I like to write a lot of things... I don't see myself trying to write justabout one thing... But I have a certain attraction for writing about this girl that destroyed me inside and hurt me really bad sentimentally, yet I still love her. In a regular, friendship way. But I also like to do fantay writing, mixing reality with fantasy... I also love writing essays... Historical/war/death stories also are some faves. But the ones I love the most is common stories that turn out the way they shouldn't turn...

I tend to write about love and all of the aspects of it more than anything else, and I also venture into social and philosophical commentary.

Most of my songs are self analytical, but I've been branching out alot more lately. I personally enjoy well writen nonsense songs alot (i.e. Land - Patti Smith and I am the Walrus - The Beatles).

I like writing about historical events, recent or ancient, along with observations and events that I've experienced, most notably with girls, be it love or friendship. Once in a while, something I read will inspire me. I wrote one piece as a response to a piece that a friend of mine wrote. Both poems were published in the same collection, so that was neat.
Musically, I do alternative, I guess. Some is more metal-sounding, others more poppy, others fingerpicked... Oh, how wonderfully terrible it is to be a solo artist.

Most of my lyrical themes are introversion in one form or another I think. Most of what I write is about me in one way or another I think.
Musically most of mine is progressive oriented, and usually rock/punk/metal based.

I like to write about ice cream and gavels.
Musically I'm a cross between Bernard Butler and Cilla Black.
I think I've found the perfect formula.

I love power metal so I'm all for the swords and shields and killing the dragons etc. Stuff along those lines.
Not quite Rhapsody though, that's a little too much.

Well, i like to write abstract songs so people aren't always clear about what i'm writing about. But i do like to write about individuals and how they're everyday life is in a totally ****ed world, describing emotions, despair, hate and apathy. But it's not all bad stuff, i also write about love, how things are starting to get good at last, things you can't really put your finger on what is (but you know it's someting good). And of course everday happenings (either good or bad, depending on how it's reacted to)
Stuff like that usually

I don't write lyrics very much anymore; only the parts of the various instruments. However, I try to give them emotions too. For them, sorrow, surprise, and triumph seem to be the best-sounding themes.

Give it time, and you'll come up with something good someday :thumb:
I try to have a real, tangible message in my song, more often than not a political one. If I'm not trying to put my view across, I'm trying to inform and/or educate. It's friggin' hard, I'll tell you. 'S why I haven't written a full song in ages.

Anything personal, can be sad or good. I find i have a ahrd time writting about things that didnt happen to me. My most powerful thing i write is about a molestation or rape.

idc what a song is about really, a song to be good must have catchy lines you remeber usually about something sad or death or such idk i love to listen to alot of diffrent lyric styles, lamb of god, and opeth are really nothing alike but i love the way they put words in songs. but thats just me

Lately I have written a lot about bad relationships and those are usually sad and depressing however i also include things about how great it was.
It seems to me to be easier to write about things that have happened and just run with it. Thats my 2 cents on it.

I use love and relationships to show the struggles going on in my life right now. I'm having trouble leaving who I was and who I knew in high school and trying to move on in college. The Artist vs. the Scientist I guess.
