1. Start SLOWLY
2. Speed up SLOWLY
3. Play Fast (not right away)

the song by stone sour called get inside has a good shredish type solo, with a little sweep in. Its good to help you learn to shred.

learn some chromatics. Those help a bunch for speed

learning to shred takes forever. I would expect you to practice 4 hours a day for life

Practice alternate picking very fast with chromatics

NO CHROMATICS!

If all you practice is chromatics, then all you'll be able to play fast is chromatics. Practices scales and sequences (which are better and more practical for finger independance anyways).

try metal heart(dimmu borgir or accept version, whichever). there's a pretty long solo, has alot of hammer ons/pullofs, some sweeping, bends, whatever...it's pretty **** fast but yeah play it slowly first. you'll want to actually memorize the song, i doubt you can shred when looking at the tab haha.

i think a combination of both is best

learn the Mr crowley solo by randy rhoads. Its not shred, but it helps you to build some speed, and its an awesome solo.

Stop giving bad advice. Whilst its good to play songs, if you really want to learn to shred, exercises are where its at.

this isn't shredding exactly but it is a good way to practice soloing. learn the solo from Crazy Train by Ozzy Osbourne, it uses all kinds of stuff like right handed hammer ons, alternate picking, trills, etc.

The first step is to accept you are on a long, difficult and dangerous road.

Download and learn a few from "I am a Viking".

One particular alt picking lick in that song practiclly taught me to alt pick at speed.

Just play. Choose pieces that are challenging and faster and you'll work your speed up over time. That's what I've been doing(along with exercises) and its working wonders.

The trick to playing it fast: playing it slow. Just start faster songs slowly, and get it really great, than play it fast.

It would be a good idea for one to start of with by playing slow then gradually picking up speed.

Obviously doing scales slowly...will help...than speed up....but chromatics combined with pentas or something....helps the shred....but don't expect to get em in 1 month...I mean it's possible....but this is eventual thing...to "shred" well anyhoo...
