Can somebody recommend more Roots type Reggae.

I've been listening to some Jimmy Cliff, Toots and the Maytals, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear. It's good, but I'd like some more artist names.

Thanks :)

Man, you're like lightning.

I'm ordering a CD by Nasio soon, I haven't been able to find it in any record stores, but that's some reggae that seems seriously worth checking out. The few songs I've heard have all been really great. If anyone can get their hands on any music by Nasio, do yourselves a favor. He was recently on the reggae tribute to Bob Dylan. It's good sauce.

Any suggestions? I want some good ol' chill reggae.

The first page of this thread is a good place to start.

definatly the first page would be the best place to start. steel pulse, burning spear, and black uhuru are 3 bands you could start with seeing as they are pretty popular

I'm probably going to go with my brother and some of his friends. It's a Bob Marley tribute show and has some great bands playing. The only thing that's bad is it's $40.

Daniel!
02-02-2006, 09:56 PM
Yeah, I read it. I just don't know what sounds like what, you know? I looked up most of the artists on Amazon and sampled their albums, but for me that's not a really accurate way to tell if I like them.

Well some of my personal favorite reggae groups similar to Bob Marley are Culture (Two Sevens Clash), Dennis Brown (The Crown Prince of Reggae), Jimmy Cliff (The Harder They Come), The Meditations (Guidance), Peter Tosh (Legalize It), and Toots & the Maytals (Funky Kingston). My favorite albums by each artist are in parantheses. I'm sure other people have some good reccomendations also.

Also, happy belated birthday Bob.

Yo Zion, here's Nasio's site:
http://www.nasioreggae.com/main.html

It's sort of a limited page, though. If you want to get it off of me on Soulseek, feel free. I think you'd really like it, it's very Wailers-esque.

no, there are a few reggae songs, but they arnt very good. There are no bad brains albums that are completely reggae, like on each album there are a few reggae tracks but mainly punk or rock depending on which album.

I was just at Bobfest San Diego yesterday. Here was the lineup from what I remember:

Tribal Feet
The Itals
Richie Spice
Cultura
Matisyahu
Freddie MacGregor
Gregory Isaacs
Barrington Levy
The Wailers

there some more minor acts that I can't remember, but this was it for the most part.

Awesome show :thumb:

Could someone re-up that Willi Williams for me?

I actually just learned about him a few weeks ago. His original version of 'Armagideon Time' is in the movie 'Seven Samurai,' and I always thought it was a Clash original. A lot of my music got corrupted somehow, so if someone could re-upload that, I'd be very much obliged.

Oh yeah, and Damian Marley and Matisyahu are gonna be holding it down at Bonarroo this year.

What are some essential artists for some just getting into Reggae/Dub?

Kyle
09-10-2006, 07:34 AM
Hmm, well you should probably start with obvious Bob Marley and the Wailers records, which most people are introduced to Reggae on. Other than Bob Marley just check out a few of the following;

Peter Tosh (again, an obvious one here)
Burning Spear
Culture
Steel Pulse

But it depends what you like really, for modern stuff you could try Groundation, or even Matisyahu.

We can't share music directly on the forum anymore, so you should get Soulseek. We've got a chat room there where we can share. Make sure to message me if you get on there (user name: JonM). My Jamaican music selection is pretty extensive, and I'd really like to check out what you got, particularly whatever Joe Higgs records you have.
