I'm really diggin' the organ in the Specials version. I have this thing for organs. But of course, the original version is untouchable. Class-sick!

The Clash's version is rockin' too, indeed. Those crazy brits with their dirty distorted guitars. I likes. The little guitar solo is wonderful too.

I think the Clash did justice to Police and Theives, too. Some of the dub and reggae stuff on Sandinasta is quality stuff also.

Not really. They are a few ska bands from my area, though.

I've been on a reggae themed downloading spree lately. This is what I've got so far:

Dennis Brown - The Crowned Prince of Reggae: Best of Dennis Brown
Bad Brains - Live
Big Youth - Dreadlocks Dread
Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Upsetters - Super Ape

The Big Youth one and Dennis Brown are my favorites so far. Dennis Brown has written some really fantastic songs.

That Prince Jazzbo album is great. I've been listening to him and Big Youth all day. I've been trying to find some stuff by U-Roy, I-Roy, Dennis Alcapone, Prince Far I, and Dillinger, but so far soulseek hasn't been very helpful.

Edit: I'm getting a Prince Far I album and a Dennis Alcapone album right now.

I was reading about Big Youth somewhere, and it said that there were three famous toasters at the same time as him: U-Roy, I-Roy, and Dennis Alcapone. So I'm gonna try to get stuff by all three of those guys, because Big Youth rocks. I have one down, two to go.

We need to write short little paragraphs for all the artists that aren't on the list in the first few posts. There's quite a few good ones not on there.

Prince Far I is great. His voice is really...interesting.

Edit:

Big Youth
Originally born Manley Augustus Buchanan, Big Youth was one of Jamaica’s most popular DJ’s (or toasters). After being a mechanic, Big Youth started DJing for Lord Tipperton's sound system. His debut single was a flop, and so were many of his next singles. He finally got a hit when he hooked up with Gussie Clarke and recorded “The Killer”. "The Killer" was followed by a string of other successful hits, and his debut album Screaming Target. Still alive, Big Youth is a major reggae icon in Jamaica.

Dennis Brown
Dennis Brown was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1957. He grew up on Orange Street, the center of the island’s music scene, and he was surrounded by famous and soon-to-be famous artists throughout his childhood. Recording his first hit at only 11 years of age, Dennis Brown has become a beloved and prolific artist throughout the entire island. He died of cocaine use on July 1, 1999.

Dennis Alcapone
Born in Clarendon, Jamaica, on August 6, 1947, Dennis Alcapone set up his own sound system in Kingston, the El Paso Hi-Fi, in 1969 and instantly became successful. In the early 1970’s, Dennis started releasing his own singles. His cheerful whoops and hollers pushed him to the top of the charts, dethroning the great U-Roy. Although still recording music, his glory days are long past, but he remains one of the greats of early Jamaican toasters.

I've been listening to Big Youth, Prince Jazzbo, and Dennis Alcapone all day.

I got bored and typed up a blurb about U-Roy, even though I've only heard 1 song by him.

U-Roy
Although not the first DJ, or even the first to make a record, U-Roy is commonly know as the Originator. His music was immensely popular, and forever changed Jamaica’s music scene. U-Roy was DJing for King Tubby’s Hi-Fi sound system when he cut his first song with Keith Hudson in 1969. Although his first song, and the few that followed, were not successful, he soon started topping the charts with his collaborations with John Holt. He has since gone down in history as the one of the innovators of the DJ and toaster style.

Wohoo! The mailing list is bringing this thread lots of new people. I'm looking foward to the Big Youth album.

This weekend I went to a record store downtown that I don't normally go to, and discovered their reggae section is about 10 times the size of my local store's reggae section. I didn't buy any reggae cd's, but I bought some records, including Bad Brain's self-titled. I Luv I Jah sounds tons better on vinyl, espicially played loudly.

Recently I've been loving the Augustus Pablo/King Tubby album King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown. It's a fantastic dub album and really enjoyable. This review from allmusic sums it up pretty well.

If you had to pick one album that best represents the pinnacle of the art of dub, you'd cull the candidates down pretty quickly to ten or 12, and it would get very difficult after that. Few would fault you for ending up with this one, though, which stands as perhaps the finest collaboration between two of instrumental reggae's leading lights: producer and melodica player Augustus Pablo and legendary dub pioneer King Tubby. Among other gems, this album offers its title track -- a dub version of Jacob Miller's "Baby I Love You So" -- which is widely regarded as the finest example of dub ever recorded. But the rest of the album is hardly less impressive. "Each One Dub," another cut on a Jacob Miller rhythm, possesses the same dark and mystical ambience, if not quite the same emotional energy, as "King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown," and the version of the epochal "Satta Massaganna" that closes the album is another solid winner. Pablo's trademark "Far East" sound (characterized by minor keys and prominent melodica lines) is predominant throughout, and is treated with care and grace by King Tubby, who has rarely sounded more inspired in his studio manipulations than he does here. Absolutely essential.

I keep on forgetting to listen to the Alpha Blondy album, but I promise I will soon.

I need so more good dub. At the moment the only dub albums I have are:

Scientist - Rids the World of the Curse of the Evil Vampire
King Tubby - Roots of Dub
Augustus Pablo/King Tubby - King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown
Lee "Scratch" Perry and the Upsetters - Super Ape
Bad Brains - I & I Survived

I plan on getting more stuff by all the artists above. Are there any other good dub artists I should try out?

Recently I've been loving the Augustus Pablo/King Tubby album King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown. It's a fantastic dub album and really enjoyable. This review from allmusic sums it up pretty well.

Best dub ever. It's sweet to the limit.

More pressingly, though, my computer can't handle Soulseek. I ordered 'Heart Of The Congos' about two months ago on Amazon.com and I haven't received it yet, and I can't find the CD or vinyl anywhere. If anyone has it and would like to send it to AIM- arsonmadeeasy, I would be very thankful.

Haa, I think he was referencing Kaya as in the dread Marijuana, my man.

I just recently listened to some tracks off of 'Firehouse Rock' by the Wailing Souls and sweet sassy molassy, it is fine. I probably won't be able to afford it until January, but until then, I'm just listening to the tunes I have on here. For those with extra cash or Soulseek or whatever, it comes highly recommended.

Also, my computer can't handle YSI uploads, but I just got 'Arkology' by Lee "Scratch" Perry, which is a three-disc boxed set and it is killer. It really does a great job of showcasing Perry's talent. My screen name is arsonmadeeasy if anyone wants it.

haha sorryi missed this, i was referencing ganja, jahs sacred herb. But honestly ilove Kaya, songs like Sun is shining, Misty Morning, shes gone, kaya, and Easy skanking are all classics, really uplifting roots. I'll agree though that Catch a fire is the Wailers best, nothing compares to early Concrete Jungle, and 400 years....damn it gives me chills.

Does anyone here play reggae music at all?

I'm just curious because I've been listening to all forms of Jamaican music for the last 10 years now and am just getting into actually playing it and have a few questions, especially relating to getting the right guitar "sound".

Right now I kinda sound like Sublime which isn't quite the "authentic" sound I'm going for.

And yes, I'd like to join an email list.

I really dislike Legend a lot.

It has some wonderful songs on it, but I really don't like how it flows as an album, you know? It's got this really cheesy "greatest hits" feel to it. I know that's exactly what it is, but still. I like them too much to choose a favorite of all time. Kaya might be my favorite at the moment.

Daniel!

Legend is the album that got me into Bob Marley and reggae music. Nowadays I don't listen to Bob very much, so it's just stayed my favorite album of his.

Natty Dread. I must say, the first time i heard it on vinyl I was hooked on marley for good.
123. That album is Marley ground zero. Catch a Fire is a close second, though.

Here's my issue with Legend and other Marley comps:

Bob Marley was a political singer. He sang about the injustice and inequalities of Africans in Jamaica, South Africa and around the world. But who owns the rights to Marley songs now? Whitey. And Whitey's keepin Marley down. Look at the tracklist on Legend. The only two remotely political song on there are Get Up, Stand Up and Redemption Song. Vague songs that have a tinge of rebellion but don't expose specific injustices. Listen to the message of that compilation: Don't worry, every little thing will be all right. Where are the anthems that cry out that, no, not everything is, in fact, all right. Musically superior tracks such as War, Burnin' and Lootin', and Them Belly Full But We Hungry are nowhere to be found, and why? Because Whitey wants to push Marley as some stupid stoner who didn't stand for ****. Put on Natty Dread!

..sorry this is all i could get done

back to the marley discussion. I find Exodus to be pretty overrated. There are some of amazing tracks on the album but there are alot that i skip over (most of which are also featured on Legend..which i dont really like myself) The song three little birds is terrible in my opinion (even though it brought more women into the reggae scene), and Jammin' (probably his biggest hit) is a little overrated, good song, but there are much better marley songs.

Oh man, just started listening to the Gladiators album and i must say, its undeniably essential roots. But guys last night me and rubbersoul were out at a concert with some local metal/screamo bands that sucked horribly, the scene was pretty lame so we decided to split but to our suprise 'stir it up' begins playing, it was a roots band at a nearby restaurant across the water, we werent set on going in at first until they began to play an incredible version of 'Rollerskates'. We had to go. Ended up getting to see the last 45 minutes of their set, it was incredible. They were called "Roadblock" and i would give anything to hear them again.
