I remember the good old days in the Opeth thread which was basically just us insulting each other for pages on end.

Good times.

I'll readily admit I have no life btw.

1st Point - Yeah me too. I should dig up the old one and find some classic posts of ours.

2nd Point - Score one for my side. :D

How's the new song ?

The new music on the trilogy is awesome, but I prefer Matt, no contest, on it. Tim sounds amazing on the new song though.

This EP is awesome.

Spoilers

He does the riffing a little more like he did on Stormrider, with the way he does the palm mutes and stuff. New song = good, Prophecy I didn't like the changes to that main bad *** electric riff, but the other new stuff added is sick. Birth of the wicked I'm on now, it's awesome and better then the original I think. Haven't heard Coming Curse yet.

Not sure about The Coming Curse. It's fairly different. It's good, but I'm not sure which I like better... both have their ups and downs. The ending is way better on the remake, never liked the choirs of the old version.

Stormrider
04-26-2007, 08:46 PM
Yeah, I read 1 and haldfreivews and skimmed through the rest, and the thing that seems to coming up on each one is 'emotionless' singing from Tim.

Darkness
04-26-2007, 09:43 PM
It's not that it's emotionless... It's just a different kind of emotion is conveyed then from Matt's vocals.

Stormrider
04-26-2007, 09:49 PM
Well, people are going to have to get used to it now will they ?

Ah well. I'm sure it'll be great. Besides, if you don't like Ten Thousand Strong, Schaffer said that iot's not the version of it that will be on the full length. So yeah.

Darkness
04-26-2007, 09:51 PM
Actually I agree with one thing they say on MA... well two things. The first being the productions' really not that good. And sometimes, the Ripper chooses the wrong tone for a particular lyric. That's all though. Still great.

Daven
04-26-2007, 09:52 PM

Yeah...I really hate those people, despite how essential the site is. I'm a "senior librarian" for Librarius Metallicus, the site M-A stole a lot of things from (LM was around first).
I used to think that if I worked really hard adding stuff to LM, it would eventually out-do M-A, but now I know it's never going to happen. :(

Darkness

Wow... I can't believe that. I just lost so much respect for MA.

SilverSpoon
04-27-2007, 06:48 PM
Okay, I was hesitant to download this, but hell, I already downloaded 80% of IE's discography already.

Ten Thousand Strong is a very solid song. Impressive opening, but the rest is standard Iced Earth fare. I noticed Schaffer's guitar tone has remained more or less the same as on The Glorious Burden. Not bad by any means, but I always liked how his tone changed up (whether it be from guitars/amps or production itself). When it comes to the new version of the Something Wicked trilogy, this was one of the first things that I actually didn't like about it. The guitar tone on Something Wicked is my favourite; very strong, very clear.

I like the way the new trilogy turned out. It has a lot of new different things added, which I find to be improvements. One is the use of the "ethnic" drum. I really don't know what it is exactly, so I'm just calling it that. The things that I didn't like that much about the new versions are the things they took away. The clock at the end of Prophecy was something I missed (but was there, shorter, and in a different form at the end of the new Birth of the Wicked) and of course the biggest omission: the piano intro to The Coming Curse. That floored me, because it sets up the outburst of the opening riff so perfectly. So I thought TCC opened up a bit weaker this time, but man, as it progresses is it unbelievable. The "ethnic" drum comes back, the more Egyptian-like chanting in the middle and towards the end, and the use of the live ending instead of fading with the chanting and the cut-off was way better. Definitely had that atmospheric feel that Schaffer told us about. The same goes for Tim's vocals in this song. Started off a bit weak, but he belts it out at the end. Birth of the Wicked I feel pretty much the same way as the original. It's very good, very solid, and a good middle song for a trilogy. It's nice to have the first and last one's to be more epic (Schaffer kind of did the same in Gettysburg). Prophecy really surprised me. The opening riff sounded more atmospheric with the chorus effects, but then it burst into the distorted guitars a lot earlier than I expected. The first time I listened to this, I didn't like the new opening. The original, even without less effects in the guitars, did sound a bit more atmospheric. But listening to it a few times, I like it more than I did the first time. It's called Prophecy, and the distorted guitars and steady, pounding drums kind of sound like something is coming. Like you're watching the army of your enemy from afar, marching toward you (think the Persian army in 300). However, I don't really like the faster riff during "So there is hope you see..." Okay, not liking it is the wrong thing to say, but I don't think it fits as well.

It's really hard to not compare these to the originals, and nitpick at things because we're so used to the originals, but this was a really amazing effort. Schaffer's guitar tones and writing have changed since 1998, and so if the new albums are continuing this story, it really works to go back to the originals and "modernize" them, so to speak, to be more in line with the new material.

Deth

Nice review there. I agree with almost all of your points.

Stormrider
04-27-2007, 10:37 PM
Yeah, the cut off of the piano intro will be a disapointment. It as a perfect build up. But use of the live ending is indeed great.

Once again, I must not give in :p

Hey, do you guys know who did bass and guitar solos on Overture of the Wicked?

Stormrider
04-28-2007, 07:59 AM

Waterloo? It's like the best song on TGB besides the Reckoning. May even be tied with it.

Stormrider
04-28-2007, 04:42 PM
Reckoning is not the best song on TGB, man. Declaration Day, Atilla, High Water Mark are all better songs.

Darkness
04-28-2007, 04:45 PM
Wrong. Declaration Day and Atilla rock hard for sure, but I like The Reckoning more because of the sweet vocals.

As for High Water Mark, I haven't really gotten into the trilogy yet.

Stormrider
04-28-2007, 04:47 PM
Then you suck. Hoigh Water Mark is without a doubt the most epic song on the album and the song with some of the best vocals by Tim on the album.

I used to really like Reckoning(not that I don't anymore), but the other 2 songs I mentioned are just better IMO. Declaration Day's vocals, if you ask me crushes everything ont he Reckoning. And then we have Atilla's chorus, heh.

EDIT: Meh, I'm making it sound as if I don't like The Reckoning. It really is an amazing song but...I just rather the other 2 nowadays.

It's just I like the bands more straight forward songs best.

I don't own the booklet, just have the album downloaded... I'm to low in cash to buy albums I have mixed feelings about.

Similarly, the music, from opening cello and Middle Eastern equivalent of slow samba rhythm ('Overture'), through the sonic deluge of 'The Setian Massacre', flamenco guitar and tribal drum patters on 'Something Wicked (Part 2)', to the bluesy, slide guitar and lap steel of the 10+ minute 'The Clouding' masterpiece or Hammond organ solo on 'The Domino Decree' and ultimately the entirely sung as a choir 'When Stars Collide (Born Is He)', retains multiple, recurrent parts, themes if you will (like Prokofiev's Peter And The Wolf), including a snippet dedicated to the main character, who although absent until Part 2 (appearing simultaneously in the timeline with the birth of Jesus Christ) can be heard on different instruments and at different paces throughout Framing Armageddon

Awsome. I can't wait.

tobius

Burnt Offerings is very maybe Tobius' favourite IE album :)

It also contains his favourite song ever and the Pierced Spirit which Tobius particularly loves at the moment :)

Stormrider
06-16-2007, 12:04 PM
It's my second favorite, behind Night of the Stormrider. Both are pretty equal though. I don't think I'de give those albums a definite 100% anymore though, like I would have a couple of months ago. For sure, high 90's though.

Meh, whatever, I probably would still :p

What's your favorite song ever that's on Burnt Offerings ?

tobius
06-16-2007, 12:25 PM
Night of the Stormrider is definately up there with Tobius' favourite IE albums.

What's your favorite song ever that's on Burnt Offerings ?
That would be Dante's Inferno; ITO that song is perfect in every way.

Ten Thousand Strong is great. The trilogy though, I'm listening to it now, and the intro to Prophecy is really great, but when the riff comes in before the verses...all the energy seems to be sucked right out if it :-/

I'll tell you what I think what's I'm done the whole thing.

Back when I was first getting into a lot of music, Iced Earth was my favorite band by far. Now though, I'm really not too excited about the new release(s) because I don't like the sound they've adopted as they (Schaffer) aged. All the darker riffs are just... gone. And none of that catchiness that Stormrider had exists anymore either. (in my heart)
Maybe I'm just being a wuss here but Schaffer needs to step up to the plate and hit me a home run.

Stormrider
06-26-2007, 07:29 PM
I'm excited about the release for sure ! I'm not expecting another Stormrider though. And I don't mean similiar music wise, I just mean the overall goodness I have with the album.

I have high hopes though, hope it won't dissapoint.

Though am I the only one that thinks IE sounds more like a typical pm band with Tim on vocals ?

Mekkalayakay
06-26-2007, 08:05 PM
Though am I the only one that thinks IE sounds more like a typical pm band with Tim on vocals ?

No, I agree. And I think that's where I lose interest. Greely and Barlow both brought a different twist (in different ways of course) to the band, which made them what they were as IE. Greely gave you the Maiden-ish/general kick ass 80's metal sound, while Barlow was just...Barlow.

Owens is a great vocalist but he fits a truly typical power metal vocal waaaay too well. And in combination with my growing dislike for the way Schaffer is writing music, my love for this band disappears more and more. :(

Stormrider
06-26-2007, 08:12 PM
Well said, man. Of course, I don't want to take anything away from Tim, he's an incredible singer, he just fits the typical power metal singer more...and I don't want IE to become that :-/

pate
06-26-2007, 08:25 PM
I don't think Ripper's all that power metally.

tobius
06-26-2007, 08:27 PM
Tobius certainly agrees with the darker riffs and what not disappearing from IE's music and it's a damn shame. Personally Tobius loves Owens and does not place any blame on IE's 'deteriorating' on him but rather on Schaffer, his writing recently has been quite bland and uninspired. Of course it's still a damn sight better than the majority of stuff being released these days.

Tobius is assuming you mean Glorious Burden. It's a fantastic cd ITO but a lot of people don't seem to have a high oppinion of it, Tobius is guessing that this is because it lacks Barlow and as everyone knows IE without Barlow is no good

Yeah, they really butchered the trilogy, particularly Coming Curse.

FatalEnergy
06-27-2007, 06:42 PM
Yeah, I'm looking forward to the new album, but....I think it's going to suck.

The new song sounded like rehashed crap to me, and there's even a chord progression that is exactly the same in it as in Hollow Man. The new trilogy blew cocknballs too. Especially the Coming Curse.

Then again, I didn't even really like the original trilogy. This one suckd much harder though.

Haha, it's still the best song of the remade trilogy IMO.

Nothing about it ever caught my ears or stood out. In fact, that describes Iced Earth's whole career to me after Burnt Offerings.

Something Wicked is probably my least favorite IE album. But the trilogy delivers.

Stormrider
06-28-2007, 01:06 AM
Burning Times, Melancholy, 1776 and 2 other songs plus the triology make the album for me.

I still like the other stuff, it's just a more..."average" Iced Earth IMO. I still don't know how to describe my feelings for that album in words...

pate
06-28-2007, 01:28 AM

Consequences is good too though. Once again, a song that Barlow makes better. Solo is pretty nice though.

Stormrider

I really like that song. Not one that I'de usually skip. I don't think I've even listened to the unplugged version of it yet.

tobius
06-28-2007, 11:53 AM
The unplugged version of WtEC is pretty good, nothing great. Tobius prefers it to the original.

Just like everything else in the remade trilogy, the solos in the originals are far superior.
