I love the frets. The neck/frets got something to it that I love...as if my fingers mold in when I play.

Guitars are very personal thingas anyways, heh.

Very true. For some reason I love my 200 dollar Squier just as much too...I must hvae gotten used to it.

Stormrider
10-14-2006, 08:09 PM
Heh, same with my first guitar, which is a jackson aswell. 250 $ guitar. It would always be better then other peoples guitar that I tried. I rarely play it nowadays because of my new dinky, but, for the old one, I'll change the strings, clean the nexk and all, and put it to some good use someday.

Shattered_Future
10-14-2006, 08:47 PM
I use my old guitar for my alternate tunings...the LP is a bitch to tune anything besides standard, honestly.

Stormrider
10-14-2006, 09:05 PM
My guitar is almost always in E flat. And everynow and then I tune it to D for Death. It's very rarely in standard to be honest.

Shattered_Future
10-14-2006, 09:28 PM
I play a lot with jazz groups and such, so I need it in standard most of the time.

I hate Eb. It's such a hassle to tune to, and it doesn't sound all that different.

Stormrider
10-14-2006, 09:34 PM
E flat for Iced Earth of course :D

And Blind Guardian. It does sound a whole lot different when you're playing along haha :p

I don't get where the hassle comes in though.

Shattered_Future
10-14-2006, 09:40 PM
You tune it down, you gotta tune it back up again, and there's little sound difference. I'm well aware when you're playing along it's different, but by itself it's kinda samey.

Deth
10-14-2006, 09:41 PM
I only use standard and D, but standard is it for 95% of the time. If I can't do it in one of those two tunings, it's not worth playing.

Stormrider
10-14-2006, 09:44 PM
. I'm well aware when you're playing along it's different, but by itself it's kinda samey.

Yeah, I know your awarwe...was just saying :p

I put it in standard for...Opeth. It's been a while since my guitar has been in standard though. Hmm, I think I'll do that with my first Jackson.

And Deth, what do you mean "If I can't do it in one of those two tunings, it's not worth playing." ?

Deth
10-14-2006, 09:49 PM
I was half kidding. I think it's stupid when bands go lower just so their breakdowns can be heavier. I don't see any need for any tuning lower than D, and even D is debatable.

I play bass, so I don't use alternative tunings, so for their sake I'm not including them in this statement.

Stormrider
10-14-2006, 09:52 PM
Oh okay then. Death is perfect in D though :)

I remember once, like last year, I hadn't been playing guitar for a long a time, and I tuned my guitar to C, for Arch Enemy. Here's the catch: I had standard size strings :p

pate
10-15-2006, 08:06 PM
I have my SG in C# with .09s right now.

Stormrider
10-15-2006, 09:55 PM
:-/

That's freakin loose strings, man.

pate
10-16-2006, 12:03 AM
Indeed. It's fun to play doom with crazy looseness.

Stormrider
10-16-2006, 02:18 PM
Ah, doom. I was wondering becayse You can't really do some fast speed picking with strings that loose heheh.

pate
10-16-2006, 04:10 PM
Gallops can be fun like that as well.

Stormrider
10-16-2006, 04:14 PM
Meh...:p

I've never tried C# with .09's anyways. I don't play with that gauge strings. 11-48 for me.

pate
10-16-2006, 04:39 PM
I used to use 10-60, but I prefer 9-42.

Deth
10-16-2006, 08:59 PM
You crazy guitarists and your tiny strings.

.045, .065, .085 and .105 is where it's at.

Stormrider
10-16-2006, 09:00 PM
Is that standard for bass or no ?

Deth
10-16-2006, 09:03 PM
Round about, yeah.

Back on guitar I always favored 9s, but we're talking about 4 years ago.

Stormrider
10-16-2006, 09:12 PM
Oh okay then.

I'm really comfortable with 11-48. Great for me.

pate
10-16-2006, 11:56 PM
I'm not sure what gauge of bass strings I use.

ArcLite
10-17-2006, 08:48 PM
I use DR "tight fit" .10's. I tried .11's once but had trouble bending the bottom E and B strings without serious effort. I like it smooth and easy, not unlike my woman (/lame).

Shattered_Future
10-17-2006, 08:51 PM
I use 10s. Always have, always will.

I personally love Db tuning. It's like C, but it sounds different enough to be ungeneric.

ArcLite
10-17-2006, 08:55 PM
I always bounce back and forth between Eb and D...I'll have to give Db a try.

Stormrider
10-17-2006, 09:27 PM
Right now I'm using Ernie Balls. Usually have Dean Markley, but meh, I'm not sure which one I'll go back to...

Anyways, Iced Earth ? :p

10-18-2006, 02:29 PM
Yeah, I know. I wasn't reffering to what you said :p

Or, maybe you didn't think I was either...Ah well. I just meant the common thing seems to be all the galloping stuff is the same, which is why I made a refference to that.

pate
10-18-2006, 02:57 PM
Yeah, I knew you weren't referring to me. Hell, even on a certain metal site, for the description of IE, it says "Iced Earth shows you what can be done with a handful of riffs and a ton of vision"

Shattered_Future

That's lame. Sure, the have the E D C progression in quite a few songs, even though, not that much. The only riffs that I undersatand that are very similiar is Pure Evil and Path I Choose...maybe with the riff in Phantom of the Opera in there. But never when those riffs come in do I tell myself, "man, can't Schaffer do any better?" because those riffs are all awesome in the song that it's in.

And yes, pate, parts of riffs...as in progression most of the time.

Now, I don't mean to sound like over obsessive fanboy goes to the rescue, but hey, that's my view on it.

Deth

Some songs on Alive In Athens have almost the same riffs in them. I think I was playing along to Last Laugh and Last December and realized I was playing the same thing basically. That's not to say I don't like both songs or Iced Earth any less.

Maiden and Priest, my two favorite bands are terribly guility of this with E C D and E D C progressions, yet the songs sound different dispite the same chord changes. Jon is getting better at this (Glorious Burden), but the middle era stuff undeniably has some uncanny riff resembalances.

There are several small bits that pop up in several places. The end of the acoustic riff in Angels Holocaust is almost exactly the same as the end of the intro riff to A Question of Heaven.

Indeed. It was quite the horror show. The lucky part was that something wicked that way was coming. A big brown bear: Smokey the bear. It was good, because someone decided that it was a burning time, and smokey saved what would have been my burnt offerings. This happened last December. But it didn't really happen: I was brainwashed while reading Dante's Inferno.

It was the path that he chose. A question of heaven, it was. Everyone was quite melancholy about this holy martyr. Turns out the bear was an eagle, and when the eagle cried, a hollow man arose out of the corpse. After the conclusion of this dark saga, the hollow man said "I died for you". Then the ghost of freedom arrived, and the proverbial wolf, dracula, and Jeckyl and Hyde went traveling in Stygian.

I hate these Winter Nights. I want Burning Times, but not so far as Dante's Inferno. But if it were to come to that, I'm sure the Desert Rains will come When the Night Falls. But with the Coming Curse, this may be my Last December. I am Reaching the End, and then it will be a Question of Heaven. But I Died for You, Jack.

I've been listening to Horror Show a lot since yesterday. About Ghost of Freedom, even though the song is really good, the verse acoustic arpegios are, dunno...sound a bit too happy ? :-/ I'm not sure if I'm saying this right or not, maybe someone elses understands. I don't know, not that they bother me but...meh, I have no idea where I'm going with this... But, I still really like the song. There really isn't one bad song on the album IMO. Not there was before, just I remember a few months ago saying I wasn't too too fond of Jack.

wrathchild88
10-24-2006, 06:35 PM
There definately isn't a BAD song on Horror Show. Ghost of Freedom and Im-Ho-Tep aren't great though. Transylvania isn't great either, but only because the original is so great. Maybe it would be better if you could hear the bass.

Stormrider

From the Century Media site:

Although only three cameras were present at the show, the energy and atmosphere of the material was overwhelming, and only three of the 31 live songs (“Slave to the Dark”, “A Question of Heaven” and “Iced Earth”) were absent or unusable due to videotape changes of the camera team.

WTF??? Missing Iced Earth and A Question of Heaven! What times to change the cameramen.

it is awesome live.

one of the songs (IMO) that is way, way, way better live is Melancholy (Holy Martyr). the studio version just doesn't hit me in the same way, live it's so emotional.

NP: Iron Maiden - The Pilgrim.

Stormrider
10-26-2006, 03:25 PM

Me too. From all of the videos and live songs I've heard by them they sound like they'd put on an incredible show. The band is so incredibly tight as well.

I remember when they were touring with Children of Bodom a couple of years back. That show would have been simply amazing.

This is from the demo by Barlow's band before he joined Iced Earth...

"An additional version of this demo was created with an additional two songs, but only this version was released. The song "Entry Number 161914 Pain" was
re-recorded as "Last December" on Iced Earth's album "Burnt Offerings". "

:-/ ...I don't get it...

pate

So Last December was originally written by Barlow's band?

Stormrider
10-30-2006, 02:20 PM
Well, according to that, it seems to be the case. But the booklet says Schaffer. Like every other song does :p

This is confusing. I'll try and find out some stuff about it later on. I'll check in the booklet to see if they mention anyone else then Schaffer....

If that is it the case, then Barlow's band made some pretty good music, heheh.

Listen to teh Barlow version. Those last lyrics just before the solo are soooo much better with Barlow then then how they're doen with Greely. I'm not bashing Greely, he would be able to do it much better then how it was done. He just says the lines...Barlow screams them out.

Hell, I'll go donate some sperm. 75 DOLLARS, BABY!

You need balls for that.

Well, 20$ isn't expensive for a cd. Atleast, I look at it that way. With the only way of getting money is colecting lunch money and keeping the change :p

That's what I do . About an extra $5 - 7 a week, not my fault if I'm not hungry.

Heh, out of 5$ everytime I get lunch money, I keep tbetween 1.50-2 $ everytime. Not bad. Sometimes more, but that's generally speaking.

So, I REALLY hpe I get to go out and buy the DVD today.

I got the DVD! I only watched about 25 minutes of it so far (Damn you, school work!) but it's awesome. The 3-camera thing is a little bit of a bother to me (surprisingly), since in my mind I know it's a DVD release and so it's not as up there as other releases, but the performance is great.

I can't seem to find anything out about this new DVD. What is it called and where can I get it?

I got it at my local CD store, and it's called Alive In Athens...

We need more detail than that! Did you notice the lack of cameras, was the quality good etc?

Quality was excellent, the three camras thing I did notice, but I think it's only because I know about it. They do a lot with only 3! The thing that bothered me was it showed Schaffer and Barlow a little more then they should have, even during solos it just showed Schaffer playing rhythm. But I was still very impressed.

If the price is right I might buy it then. Sounds like a deal.

I paid 30 bucks, and at first I was worried I wasted money, but now I think I would have paid 40. It's really long too, which is good. Great way to spend a night I think.
